It is a deep, powerful book looking into the history of how black women (and to a lesser extent Puerto Rican and Native American women) have had their reproductive freedom curtailed or openly fought against in the United States.
Just an amazing, informative read for anyone interested in reproductive choice, feminism and womanism.
You get to find out things like Margaret Sanger was not the hateful racist she is portrayed as these days, and that there has never been a 'black matriarchy' at all. Or that the crack baby thing was a complete fabrication.
I just think all women should read books like this, just to understand how women of all types can be denied the basic management of their own bodies and fertility at any time (there is also some stuff about how poor white women were forcibly sterilized against their will en masse, for example).
Anyway, great book, get a copy!
