    Default Feminism

So I was wondering what 'Feminist' views of stripping are. I guess they must be divided between 'strippers are empowered females' and 'strippers are exploited females'...

...I was wondering what encounters you guys have had with feminists, how you've coped with them - and if there are some among you, what your views on this job/career are?

well feminism at its barebones definition really just means the belief that men and women are equal.

now unfortunately things have gotten so twisted that feminism is often confused with the belief that "femenazis" have.

im a feminist as in i believe men and women are equal, though we obviously have differences. I encountered feminists more before i started dancing, especially since i was in a woman studies class. I wish i started dancing before that class...i think i would have had more to add.

My views on this job are its good money mostly. I have fun with it and I flaunt my body. I'm proud of my body and I have no moral qualms about using it to seduce men out of their money. Sometimes we will get customers that will try to degrade us, but people like that exist everywhere. You dont here a large debate about whether women as waitresses is demeaning. And think about it...they have to wait hand and foot on the customers, and the customers are not always polite. In stripping, there is a demand for near naked woman, and i am supplying it. I try to avoid the customers that completely disrespect me and spend my time on those that treat me well and spend money on me.

I identify as a sex positive feminist. And Athena ^ is right--the definition of feminism is just the belief that men and women should be equal.

I'm pretty sure I started a thread about this (called "The Feminism Thread") not too long ago.

    Ah! Here it is!

I'm a feminist and always have been. Like anything, there's different branches. There is an organization (forget the name) for feminists in the sex industry. Feminism means equality. I support equal rights for women, I support equal pay, I support abortion rights. I believe women should have a career. I also believe you can be a stripper and a feminist.

And the comments about strippers demeaning themselves make me laugh. I've encountered more sexism in the corporate world than I did dancing. I've met more chauvinist men in my corporate life than I did dancing. Sure, the managers at the clubs can be demeaning, but there's nothing more demeaning than making less than a guy for doing the same job (I've been there).

I'm a feminist women's studies minor. Half the women's studies department know what I do, and for the most part think it's awesome. I usually get a lot of questions, but usually how certain stuff is treated in the club. I've even been asked to write for Bring Back the Night at my school by a butch lesbian (who's a fuckin sweetheart btw).

I think it all depends on the dancer, and if she allows herself to be exploited.

This is one of the few jobs that actually FAVORS women. I wish they would do the same kind of studies on male vs. female strippers as they do for the "real" workforce (IE on the books), in which women only make 77% of what men do. There is also the glass ceiling for women, and women have to strive extra hard just to be on level field with an average man in her field. Men with equal, or even lesser qualifications is more likely to get a better position, or to be promoted than a woman.
Strippers... we determine how much we make with a combination of sales skill, personality, and looks. Our earning limit is whatever's in the customer's wallet.
Lead me not into temptation. I can find it myself.
