    Question Filing as an 'entertainer'

So I'm getting ready to start dancing again and I want to do things the right way but as a (legit, licensed) massage therapist I absolutely cannot have a record of me dancing for fear of loosing my license or 'posing' as a massage therapist if ya know what I mean. So for 2010 (woooow, that weirdly seems so futuristic although it just next year) I thought about filing that income under the all encompassing 'entertainer' which for me would include dancing, acting, and singing. Can I do that even though the dancing is exotic dancing? I also want to know if I would be able to write off acting classes, voice lessons, headshots etc. as well as make-up, eyelashes, dancer outfits, plane tix etc under that umbrella term. It seems like it would be perfectly fine as they are all forms of entertainment but I just wanted to ask you oh so knowledgeable SW'ers to make sure. Also would incorporating be a good idea?

You know that's even better. I don't know why I didn't just think of that! As an MT I file as an independent contractor now so that just takes the hassle out of it and gives me more to write off

Quarterly filing is required of anyone who expects to owe more than $1,000 in taxes and is not being witheld.

Even if you put 'dancer' on the IRS forms, why do you think it will get out?

You will have to see an accountant. You specifically wrote that you see 'entertainer' to include dancing, acting and singing. Guess what? The tax man allows each deductions they don't allow for the others, and it's what they see it as that matters.

I don't have any previous experience in this area, I just didn't want to take any chances. In L.A. county they make you do fingerprinting and heavy background checks (as well as STD tests but we wont go there!) to renew your license. IDK I thought maybe there was a chance something could turn up but maybe I'm being overly paranoid. I guess background checks don't include tax returns?

Aaah. Ok. That's why I asked. I guess I'll go do some research on how to find a good accountant.

Nope, they don't include tax returns.

The IRS doesn't really care what you do, as long as you pay your taxes. OK, maybe if you put down drug dealer, they may 'turn' it over. lol But, do you ever recall hearing of the woman who was a police officer and then became an escort? She wrote a book a number of years ago. She was asked this question in a Oprah style questioning session (from the audience), and she said she put that she was an escort. She also said she never had any problems.

Actually if you live / work in California ( where the courts have said that dancers are statutory employees) you can't just invent an occupation - you have to pick one from the state's list ...

... which leads straight to an occupation code for 'dancer'. Granted it does not specify ballet or exotic !

Am I correct in assuming you meant going from escort to police officer?

Thanks Melonie and Nola Manager for the info!

Then how does that prove anything? If she had gone from being an escort to being a police officer, it would mean that the background check didn't look into her tax returns.

All your example proves is that her escort agency (or herself if she was an independent) didn't care that she used to be a cop. Big deal.

    WTF????????????????????????

On her tax returns, she put down that she was an escort. The IRS didn't give a shit as long as she paid taxes on her earnings.

So her being a cop meant absolutely nothing. Sorry, I forgot that you like to include useless bullshit trivia in your answers for shits and giggles.

You posted that information in a direct response to someone who asked about background checks. Are you really that stupid?

    What to file under occupation.

Is the information going to get out.

She asked. I said. She said. I said. We were discussing two parts of her question, including the post I responded to. Pretty simple ehhh (of course one has to actually know how to read and comprehend).
