Default horrible leg pain... HELP! :(

I just started dancing for the first time ever on Thursday- got hired immediately and worked the whole night, from 5pm to 2am.

My legs didn't feel too bad that night... but the next morning they felt like they had been run over my a truck I had to go into my "dayjob" at 11AM that morning (I work in a fast-paced kitchen), and planned to bike home from work at 5pm, get dressed, and go back into the club and work 7PM to 2AM.

WELL... after my kitchen work I couldn't even bend my knees on the pedals to bike home, and called into the club and told them I couldn't work that night Then I called my roommate for a ride home.

I didn't go into the club today either, cuz my legs are still in agony. I still can't bike, have trouble walking up and down stairs and sitting down, and just walking in general.

I tried bathing in epsom salts last night but it didnt do much good. I've been taking aspirin and stuff too.

Is it normal to not even be able to bend your knees for a couple days after your first night, and for your thighs to hurt to the touch?
Is this something I should see the doctor about, or just scrape up some cash for some Icy-Hot or other topical cream? (I would only see a doctor as a last resort, as I have no health insurance and no money).

    Any help would be appreciated!

PS- as an aside, after tip-out on my first night I took home about $60. The girls told me it was a slow weeknight. I'm excited about going back and doing better next time. I thought I'd be nervous as hell on stage but it was so much fun! We had a fun group of older lesbians who tipped very well and an old man who was pretty much like an ATM machine, lol. I'm still kinda shy about approaching strangers and asking for dances, though I did ask a few guys and ended up giving 1 lapdance and 1 VIP dance. I didn't drink any alcohol or take any drugs and I don't intend to.

dancing shouldnt hurt THAT bad. i think you might be overdoing it. i'm assuming you dont have any severe health problems.

do you stretch before work? if not, you will need to start doing that. i can give you some suggestions on that.

do you think it's your muscles or something else, like a tendon?

also, what are you wearing for shoes?

i doubt aspirin will help. i prefer aleve. ice (15min on, 15 min off) and keep the legs elevated above the chest in bed if possible and stay off them. icy/hot wont help or at least it doesnt help me and neither do epsom salts.

What you are experiencing is at the high end of normal and no, you don't need to go to the doctor. I have had similar experiences when I do too much but haven't exercised for a while. It's common to have pain for up to 4 days, believe it or not. Ibuprofen will be more effective than aspirin, if you can take it (it has anti-inflammatory properties whereas aspirin does not). I hope you feel better soon!

Ibuprofen. Epsom salt ( soak in a tub full of hot water as HOT as you can stand it. One or two cups per tub full )

Eat a banana or get some potassium supplements. Leg and feet cramps or pain is usually due to a lack of potassium.

    Hope you feel better.

Very normal.. I still have pain if I work three nights straight, or a noon to 2am shift.. the body isn't used to that much action..
Def. try and stretch a lot.. I don't really mean just before work, but throughout the day, to try and stretch the muscles that are cramping up.
Epsom slats are great and I like heating pads, mostly for my lower back.
I also put my feet up as much as possible, propping them up on pillows has always eased my leg pain..
    These sites rock, too.

If you are thinking of using something like Icy Hot rub, you can also try Arnica Gel. You can use it for muscle aches from over exertion, and it is also handy to keep around to help reduce the signs of bruising, which you may experience as you continue to dance.

    thanks for the advice everyone!
I was a dumbass and didn't stretch at all before, during or after work

I didn't know what the heel requirement would be for the place so I bought 6-inch platform heels and when I got hired it turned out that there's no minimum heel requirement (except you can't wear flats). Oops. My feet feel fine though, as the shoes are made for dancers and are slightly padded.

I tried another Epsom salt back last night... and I laid down in the bath gently stretching my legs and bending my knees little by little (using my hands so it didnt hurt) and I felt a little better and a little more able to bend them when I got out. So I'll just keep gradually gently stretching until they can move normally again and I feel I can dance again. I'll also try the bananas, ibuprofen and some other stuff too.

Again, thanks so much! I was kinda scared

I don't think it's a tendon. As long as I keep off my knees and don't touch them or my lower thighs too hard they don't hurt. I don't know much about tendon injuries though...

if there is swelling...ice it...i have kneee problems and whenever i go to drill i have to ice my knees forever after i get home. the arnica montana works really well, i never knew they made it in a gel i know they make it in tiny pills, its like an herbal rememdy. the pills come in like a chapstick looking tube they sell it at wholefoods and it definetly helps with soreness if you take it before a workout

do you do floor work? i used to work at a floorwork club and my knees would kill me and be bruised up after one night.. if so, invest in some knee pads. you can get them at rite aid for like five bucks each.

I had that problem my first few days dancing. I was in excellent shape, but the addition of the heels made a huge difference in how I used my muscles. If the pain is muscular, about the only thing you can do is drink plenty of water and do gentle stretches. If the pain is in the joints (knees hips ankles), take advil and ice the problem areas.

I literally couldn't walk up the stairs to my apartment after my second night dancing, I was in that much pain. Luckily it was 3am and no one noticed that I was crawling .

When you are dancing, adrenaline is coursing through your veins, numbing the pain of exertion. It is after you have rested a bit that the body allows you to feel the pain that you have inflicted. This is a biological process that protects humans when threatened by imminent death from that saber tooth tiger.

In my situation the best thing was to keep going. By the end of my first week I felt much better (still sore, but manageable). If you do indeed have just muscle pain from over exercising, continuing to work at a more sedate pace will help you heal faster by keeping the muscles warm and moving.

*If you have joint pain, do not go back to dancing until you either see a doctor or the pain goes away. You may have sprained or strained the joint and continuing to dance on a damaged joint(s) is only going to do more damage.

my knees killed me after my first night dancing. was difficult to step onto curbs, up stairs, anything. i went back after a week when they had stopped hurting, and they have never hurt like that since then.
