Default What kitty malady could this be?

This stray I took in was drooling a lot or something, her mouth and chin was always wet during the middle days (it's been a week). Her tongue was constantly stuck out.

She is definitely getting way, way healthier, gaining weight steadily, her coat is getting sleek, etc.

But her left upper lip seems to be pulled up or something, and then her left lower fang pokes out. Her tongue sticks out a bit too, but not as bad or as much. It still looks funny, especially the lip thing, but I am hoping it is something related to starving or dehydration and it will go away.

ETA--I just took another look at it--it's hard to tell what is going on. Maybe it is a birth defect and that's why she was cast out.

Something like that happened, she was not a feral cat at all, you can tell by her behavior. Loyal, almost like a dog following me sometimes. But strangely reluctant to go near carpeted areas. Like she'd been kept in a garage or something.

Sounds like she's had her jaw broken or she has a broken tooth in there. I had a stray that I took in, she drooled a lot too - Vet said she had .. had her jaw broken and it did not heal right. Otherwise the kitty was healthy.

OMG that would explain her starving. She was about to die I swear, worse than the ordinary stray. And I live on a busy street, she could have been hit by a car and then holed up in the space under the porch. It's a huge old Victorian house.

I come home from work at 4:30 AM and she was halfway up the stairs, two steps up from the first landing. Ordinarily in a situation like that the kitty will freak at being cut off from escape and will bolt, unless they know you. She just cringed there, skin and bone and her tail hanging. It was awful.

I am strictly forbidden to have pets but went to buy food for her right away. But when I got back she was gone. Then there again the next night after work so I took the food out. Then she never left the stairs landing again. A couple nights later I was drunk and took her in.

But she could eat OK since the second night I saw her, maybe the first but she had vanished when I got back with the food.

Yeah she prolly got hit by a car and landed on her face. Poor thing.

Is it wet or dry food your giving her? Canned food might be easier for her to masticate if she does have broken teeth.

That is so NOT a good description of a rabid animal. Its a fiction HORROR novel. And you dont get an animal "checked out" for rabies. The only test involves cutting off the head and testing the brain.

Hypersalivating is a very common symptom of a mouth/jaw injury. If you can get her to a vet soon,do it. These injuries can escalate quickly.

In the meantime...feed her soft food and make sure she is getting enough water.

^ yeah. sounds like an injury, not something like rabies. lol. if it were rabies, she'd be dead by now.

i'd take her to a vet. if they know that she's basically a stray, they'll probably give you a pretty good discount, at least a lot of vets will do this. hell, when i got my cat fixed, i told them she was mine and i was keeping her, but i also told them how i'd taken her in as a stray kitten rather than normal adoption, and i paid less than half what i should have.

Yeah it's funny, I have been wanting to start feeding her hard food as she will be going to the shelter and they don't feed them tender vittles there, lol--though they do feed them well I have seen. But my van is spraying gasoline all over--it's a bomb on wheels and so I need to get it towed in and looked at (another reason I haven't taken her to the shelter yet). In the meantime I am riding my bike to the drugstore and the easiest food to get for her is the canned stuff. Maybe that is a good thing.

She never seemed to have trouble eating even from the first night, but maybe starvation overcame any jaw/tooth pain. She isn't drooling anymore, though the lip is still pulled up and her tongue sticks out sometimes. If it's a jaw or tooth injury it is getting a lot better, even if it's not healing as it could/should with a vet's care. Like she started grooming herself 3-4 days ago. She is generally quite comfortable--too comfortable as she can't stay here much longer.

I feel so bad for her, and now I am feeling guilty about not getting her to the shelter sooner--but she sure seems happy here with me, tooth sticking out and all.

I'll keep you posted--thanks for all the replies!

I hope you can find a do-not-kill shelter. She's lucky to find a caring person like you.

Will she let you look at her teeth? She could have a(or many) broken teeth. Possibly cavities or tooth decay may cause the drooling. Starvation will cause her to have tooth problems.

If it were rabies at the drooling stage humans wouldn't be able to get close to her at all.

If she was my cat forever I could grab her and open her jaws, I know how to do that (you hold firmly on either side and push gently) and look inside. But it tends to scare them/freak them out when you do that.

As I was typing that I realized that if I care about this kitty (which I sure do!) I would look anyway. I did, and she is missing the upper left fang. Probably got hit by a car as I was thinking. Which means she probably needs to have the root of the tooth taken out, that's what happened to my first kitty when she lost a fang the same way.

There are no other houses right nearby where I live, only across and down the street a ways (which is pretty busy). She must either have been abandoned as people will do, or wandered too far from home and got lost.

She is pretty young, probably about 9-10 months old, or else a really tiny cat to begin with. She doesn't want to play though which means she is still recovering. She seems really, really happy though and follows me everywhere. Her coat is getting rich and glossy which makes me sooo happy!!

I will pay for tooth extraction even if I can't keep her. I love this kitty.

    Thanks again everyone.

I vote that instead of the shelter, you go on petfinder or something and get her adopted privately. Even in do-not-kill shelters, they can stay there a long, long time and it can be pretty scary. Charge a menial adoption fee though, it makes sure people are really interested, and they are getting her for animal testing as they do for the "free to good home" ads on craigslist.

I can't even go to the anial shelter without crying like a wuss.

Tooth loss or breakage means that it hurts her to eat. She will lose weight just because of that. Would be interesting to find out if it's facial deformation birth defect or a car-hits-cat thing.

I don't think it's a birth defect because of the heavy salivation after she was here a couple days. That got better but she's still doing it a bit.

Plus she sleeps more than a cat her age would, doesn't want to play at all. Which is fine with me but I fear it is because of health, not temperament. She's very affectionate but quite content to follow me around and be petted.

Thank god I didn't just take her to the shelter like I almost did, as it turns out they are putting down animals that can't be adopted easily (in her shape she wouldn't be), and they don't have a vet there that can extract the rest of the tooth. Even with me taking care of the tooth using an outside vet there is no guarantee they can keep her for adoption. They had me choking up in there talking about her case.

So anyway she has an appointment on monday with a vet that can extract the tooth, now I have to figure out how to smuggle her out of here, lol!

Aweeee.. Your such a good KittyDaddy. One way to smuggle is to get a cardboard box. It looks like your just moving stuff to someplace. Cover it with a blanket and put one of your unwashed shirts in there so she's comforted by your scent.

Haha that's exactly what I was planning to do!

A banana box will be perfect--it has two parts, the thick bottom box and the top box that slides on top of it--I can pull the top part of the box up once I get her in the van. There are already holes for ventilation, and I can make some more, hidden by the top part when it's down. I figured I'd put an old pillow in there, that will remind her of home, but a shirt also is a great idea--thanks!

I am so smitten with this kitty, in just two weeks, like it's friday night and I am pining away for her at work. What I'm going to do when I have to give her away, I don't know...

Aww, she sounds lik such a cutie, affectionate already. With my cat now, it took her awhile to play with her toys too, new place, new people but she eventually started doing it, and now sometimes she doesnt stop.

But your story sounds adorable, personally idk if i would b able to give her up. I get attatched way too easily. But I hope you find a solution that works perfectly for both you and her.

This is a great story. I volunteer at the animal shelter, and we're trying very hard to make it a no kill shelter. We even have foster homes for kitties until we have space, and take home the really sick kitties until they get better. Being there for years, I've seen all sorts of horrible things and people. Just last week, someone DROPKICKED a box over the fence with a cat in it and then drove off.

Awesome that you're taking care of her- there aren't many people that would go to such lengths over a stray cat. I encounter more dropkick over the fence types than people who actually care about the animal they're bringing in/leaving in our yard. I really wish you could keep her! Also that there were more people like this in the world...

Yeah, he was fine. We named him Trio because he only had three legs. Cutest thing ever, and he got adopted quickly after he got over his kitty cold.

Just got back from the vet. A couple of surprises.

'She' is a fixed male. Far from being a kitten, he is just a small cat and probably getting up there in years as he has cataracts and probably can't see too well, which explains why he didn't seem able to easily find the food I set out for him sometimes.

The bad news--his mouth is a mess. He not only lost his upper left fang, but his lower right, and several other teeth too. Not from getting hit, from mouth/gum/dental problems in general. He has an infected area in the left rear as well. They are going to put him on antibiotics and then pull more teeth. Which means he will be eating soft food for the rest of his life, I suspect.

Being nearly blind with bad teeth, it's no wonder he was starving, kind of hard to hunt anything like that.

They did say he was 'a handsome cat', so I think he has been recovering pretty well in the last two weeks because he wasn't handsome when I found him, poor thing.

He is going to stay at the vets until friday when he should be well enough (antibiotics) to pull the bad teeth.

500$, which is a lot to pay for a cat I can't keep but I love him, so be it. Right now I miss him but I feel good he is going to be taken care of.

is there any way you can keep him at your place? I lived in a place in l.a. for four years and had a cat in my apartment the whole time. I'm only asking because you two seem like such a good match.
