I've had a head cold all week. I decided to avoid cold medicine because of midterms, but was so stuffed up the night before last I couldn't hardly sleep. So last night I decided to try a home remedy that sounded silly but harmless. It's called the "Wet Sock Treatment".
You do this at night and sleep with the socks on. Basically, what you do is have 2 pairs of socks, one a regular cotton ankle or sport sock the other pair wool socks. Warm your feet up. I used a heating pad and a blanket until my feet were very warm and pink. Soaking in hot water would work as well. Get the cotton socks wet with cold tap water and put them on your toasty feet, then slip the wool socks over the wet cotton socks and go to bed.
The idea is to relieve nasal congestion, and I was totally shocked that it worked! In about 10 minutes my totally stuffed up head cleared and stayed clear all night long. I felt a little chilled when I first went to bed, but I snuggled up to my hubby and fell right asleep and didn't feel cold the rest of the night.
I don't know why it worked, and I felt a little silly putting on wet socks to help with my head cold. But I thought, why not? It seemed harmless enough. I even read that this is safe for babies, since it isn't recommended to give small children cold medicine, some mommies here might give it a try to see if it helps you little ones sleep better.
