Default Where should I move? (SF, Denver, or NOLA)

My boyfriend and I currently live in North New Jersey...we're planning on move cross-country very soon. Originally we were going to move to San Francisco, but now we're weighing some other options as well. We're thinking either San Francisco, California, Denver, Colorado, or New Orleans, Louisiana. I was hoping the great minds of SW could help me narrow down or at least contrast and compare these places as far as work possibilities and quality.

Oh, and I'd also like to state that we're moving because of personal reasons, we're not chasing the money like some industry people are, but I need to know I can support us, obviously.

    Thanks so much in advance.

I've lived in both Denver (well, a suburb of Denver--Aurora) and New Orleans. I can give you a lot of insight on both of them. However, I've only ever stripped in New Orleans.

Culturally, Denver and New Orleans are like night and day. They both have a lot going for them, just in totally different ways. Denver is very clean, progressive, well-run. There is a great public education system, and the city is very safe. However, culturally, I found the city totally lacking compared to New Orleans. I am very biased to New Orleans, though, as I am from here and I love it passionately.

If you are outdoorsy and love mountains and you want to feel like you can walk around at night without getting shot, go to Denver. There are also a lot more job possibilities that there are in New Orleans, where the hottest industry is service industry.

However, if you want the experience of living in an old, culturally rich, modern-day bohemia, move to New Orleans. The cost of living here is cheap, the food is incredible, the music is soul-stirring, and Bourbon Street is a stripper's dream. Clubs door-to-door.

I can't say enough good things about NOLA, but it isn't for everyone. The city has very serious problems, among them crime, poverty, and a broken educational system and criminal justice system. I would highly recommend you visit in the summer (when it's hot and miserable, and the strip clubs are dead) before making the move down here.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I love weighing in on these two cities.

Edit: Also, as far as the money goes in New Orleans: It can be very hit-or-miss. Most Bourbon Street clubs, you'll be dependent on tourist dollars. So during MArdi Gras, Jazzfest, conventions, you can do well. During the summer, the clubs are very dead. There is one club in New Orleans East--Visions--that caters to locals and has a more consistent stream of income. Lately, it seems everyone around here has been struggling--myself included. But I think it's like that everywhere.

Thanks for your response! Its helping a lot...when I do pick, if I choose Denver or New Orleans, I hope you won't mind me bugging you for some more details...

But oh! I forgot to add this into my original post...both my boyfriend and I are 19 years old...would this have any bearing on the choice?

My BF is leaning more towards Denver, mostly because he has family in Boulder, but I would prefer NOLA (of the two at least)...but I've heard its very much a bar town and not fun if you're not 21. Thoughts?

It's true that NOLA has a heavy drinking culture. Some of the bars ID you to get in; some of them don't. It's been a long time since I was an underage drinker, so I can't offer any advice on that front.

All the strip clubs (except Deja Vu, which charges a steep cover for the underage) are all 21+ for entry, but I'm almost positive that you can work at them if you're 18.

I really think that New Orleans has a lot to offer besides the drinking aspect. It is fun no matter what age you are--I mean, even when I was a little kid, I had a lot of fun here. You don't have to be 21 to go to Jazzfest or Voodoo fest or any of the great shows we get here. But like I said, I'm biased.

Bug me for whatever details you want.

Well, I guess this is as good time as any to have a first post. Helpfulness, yay!

Anyway, I've lived in New Orleans my whole life and I love it. LOVE. Wonderful culture, always something to do. You can work in any of the clubs as long as you're 18.

Yes, drinking is a huge thing down here. But tbh, you don't have to be 21 to get into a lot of places. I go out with youngsters all the time, never have a problem. I myself look to be about 19 and never ever get carded.

Honestly though, it's a lot of fun even without drinking. We have tons of museums and festivals and stuff. I love walking down Royal in the quarter and just going in all the art galleries. Sigh. I think I shall have a French Quarter day very soon. I love FQ afternoons.

    Wow, New Orleans sounds wonderful.

What do the girls who dance there tend to look like?

Any info on the other locations ala Denver or SF would be appreciated too.

I wouldn't say that anywhere is good right now.

San Fran is a hustle city with higher contact. The city has cockroaches everywhere. I had them crawling across the desk at my office job there and would sometimes see them in the clubs on Broadway, even the places that didn't serve food. I love San Fran but the cockroaches creep me out. Regulars are also harder to develop there. I wouldn't recommend San Fran unless you are okay with roaches, and really know how to hustle.

Denver is a lot easier, but the clients that come in tend to be the younger guys with less money. The city is really known for it's nightlife, which is very clique-ish, and typically these people hang out at the clubs and LoDo bars. However the cliques don't tend to wander into the SC. It's mostly young single men with little money & not going to school, some college guys, and a few older men. Dancer's here barely hustle. Last fall some of my friends that were dancing were complaining because they were having to work an extra 3 shifts to make what they had been making the summer prior in a single shift. I know dancers here are walking out owing the house.

If I were you I would arrange to visit Boulder and look for cheap apartments around Louisville. Nitro in Boulder is a new club that has a really good reputation and the dancers are making about 3 times the amount the dancers in Denver are making.

Without knowing what the average nights are in New Orleans in terms of money, it's hard for me to tell you which is better.

You are going to visit your choice and stay a couple weeks without doing a permanent move right? Keep in mind that along with the San Francisco roaches ( which don't creep me out too much ... but they are there ) , SF is also VERY cold. I still haven't gotten a handle on what neighboorhoods don't have bone chilling cold and I've been traveling to SF for over 4 years ( I spend about 25% of my time there and 75% in my home area ) . I would highly recommend that if you are set on living in SF you come for a couple weeks and make sure the weather doesn't drive you away. I was considering a permanent SF move , but after spending a week there last week ...... I just froze and was miserable ( apparently they had a heat wave and I missed it ).

This is a bit of a thread jack ........ but those who know SF ........ do you need to just be in out of the city to be warm ? I heard there were warmer areas but can't seem to find them. I wandered around the lower haight area and the mission most of the my time and just froze my ass off.

For SF .... if you are cold sensitive like me ( which is a real pain because my home area is also really cold for 5 months out of year ) .... you might want to live in the East Bay ( or Napa / San Jose ) and drive into the city to work.

Keep in mind that in SF you DO NEED TO WORK A SCHEDULE ( which I've whined about numerous times already on this board ) . If you can work 3 days a week, they are happy to have you. If not, you are just out of luck. They are really strict with schedules in SF.

^^^ I remember it could get chilly, but no where near as bad as a Colorado winter. The worst weather I remember having in SF was some cold rain, and I could still walk in it so it just wasn't that bad.

Carmen, my best friend goes to school in SF, so I've visited a bit, and I absolutely LOVE the weather there, given my choice I would like it even a tiny bit colder, but I'm weird like that. I also worked in SF for a couple days and for some reason I found the SC atmosphere to be REALLY depressing, and I had a hard time making money. I always thought it was just me, but apparently some other people have had trouble working there too

Kylea2, my bfs family lives right next to Boulder, so it was the plan to go and stay with them to visit for awhile in the first place. I've heard you have to be mega skinny to work in the whole Colorado area, which stresses me out a bit, because its starting to look like Colorado might be the best option for us. I mean, I'm not huge or anything, I would put myself as more average sized...but I guess I could always tone up before we move.

It's not true, so don't worry so much. At this point the only club here that I would say is very picky is Penthouse, although La Boheme used to hire a lot of girls that were anorexic looking. In general though there is a wide variety of girls in the clubs. Diamond Cabaret used to be super picky and lately I've seen some pretty heavy set girls even there!

Living in San Francisco was the best year of my life- in the personal aspect. I lived in Haight-Ashbury (third house on the left at the intersection, actually..it was bad ass!), I could walk anywhere, Golden Gate Park was right there. Fresh produce, cool people, tons of culture. It was amazing. I would move back if it made sense.

HOWEVER- Dancing nude in SF was very, very hard for me. I worked at Centerfolds for awhile, and it was a goddamn nightmare. Very heavy two-way contact, even with female customers... a lot of times they pull the females patrons up onstage, strip them and grab/lick their boobs. Live sex shows there were commonplace, done in the shower show room with double ended dildos. The club is beautiful, but I made no money and went home crying ever single night. The hustle is VERY, VERY HARD in the nude clubs. Topless ones are pretty cool, I made good money when I swapped to a topless one. I just can't deal with contact, personally.

Also take into mind the cost of living. It cost me and my ex husband $9,000 to get an apartment. First month's rent, last month's rent and deposit. We had a two bedroom about 1100 square feet, and it cost us $3,000 a month. A nice one bedroom in a nice neighbourhood runs you about $1800-$2500 a month, even now. Under $1000 will likely get you either a) a studio in the Tenderloin or b) An efficiency or studio in Sunset or Richmond.

If your boyfriend has a good job lined up ($75k/yr +) and you have a good chunk of savings AND you can hustle like a mofo... you will love and adore SF. If you do NOT have even ONE of these things, crashing and burning is a very, very real possibility.

^^^^ Ugh, don't remind me of the cost of living out there! Geez!

$1,200 for a studio apartment in a not so great area of town. $250 for monthly parking garaged 1 block away from where I lived. $10 to park each time I went to school or work. PLUS gas/electric, phone, car, insurance, etc.

San Francisco is crazy expensive. I seriously think you should check out Nitro in Boulder and consider living in Louisville where it's really cheap!

I so wish I could justify moving to San Francisco...I love being there, I really do. But yeah, Mediocrity, I really agree with you on the working conditions. I was only there for two weeks to work, and I was literally to the point of a near anxiety attack before going in each night. I'm too young to work topless in SF (believe me I tried, I spoke to every manager I could on the issue) so I was stuck in the nude clubs. I've still kept SF as an option because I love the city so much and I've been trying to tell myself that I would be able to get used to it and flourish there. I work North Jersey gogo, for gods sakes, I should be able to handle it with what I've had to work with, or at least thats what I was telling myself until the boyfriend started throwing these other options I hadn't even thought about at me.

So can any of you Colorado ladies give me any details on what the cost of living is like in that area of Colorado? I mean from the link you gave me Kylea2, its seems much more reasonable than SF or even where I'm living in Jersey now. I know that money is bad out there atm, but is there any kind of range you could give me on earnings? At my club recently its been HORRIBLE, I mean most girls leaving with less than $100 on the weeknights and less than $250 on the weekends, and even thats if you're lucky. Also its completely extras ridden, so that makes it even worse.

I just don't want to walk into anything unprepared.

Thanks for any updates that can be given.

Oh wait, can I even work in Colorado being that I'm 19? I know I can't in topless in SF, that I can anywhere in NOLA, but what about Colorado?

Yes, you can work topless at 19 in both Colorado and San Fran. In San Fran I worked at the Hustler, and it was a pastie club at the time. In Colorado there are topless clubs that serve alcohol but allow underage dancers to work. Normally they will tag you with a bracelet or something when you come into work so the waitresses know not to serve you alcohol.

Nitro is doing a lot better than many of the other clubs in Colorado. I've heard the average girls there are walking out with about $500 a night. In comparison as I was saying earlier some of my friends in Denver are really having to work a lot more shifts than usual. One of my good friends who has multiple titles is working about 12 hours now to make the $200 that she used to make in a 4 hour shift before this recession started.

You might want to try one of these tools for cost of living comparison:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=cost+...ient=firefox-a

Plus, check out Craigslist... there are a lot of good housing deals on there.

If you want the average prices for anything specific let me know. Here's a tool for comparing the cost of gas:

    I doubt her bf has a 75k+ job lined up there ....... I think he's 19 too.......

You are only 19 ! You could also do SF when you can work at the better clubs and you both have more day job experience under your belt.

I really love SF too ...... moving there is on my radar as well. For some reason, I just can't seem to make the move a reality even though it makes sense. I travel there for my day job at least 6-10 days per month ( at least two plane trips per month .... they are wearing me out ). If I were to move there, my money would be about even ( I'd make more at my day job which would balance out the higher costs of living ). I could also work a couple nights at the SC a week if I wanted to. I guess I just worry that I'll be "lost" there. I have tried to convince my boyfriend to move there with me, but he likes the slower pace of where we live .... ;(

Eden: It sounds like the Boulder area might work really well!

Mediocrity : I LOVE that neighboorhood! I spent a couple days there recently ( I was doing my own " should I move research " ) , but I didn't know that the neighboorhood shuts down on Mondays! I was trying to go back to "my" coffee shop ( International Cafe on haight / fillmore ) and the whole area was shut down .

Kylea: Those numbers at Nitro sound lovely .....

^^^ Nitro is right down the street from the CU Campus and is in a very busy area. There is only one other club in Boulder, but it's really old. CU is known as one of the top party colleges, and of course a lot of the kids have their parents paying for everything with extra cash to blow - and obviously a SC is a good place to blow money. All I can say is that it certainly beats Denver!

BTW I was in the Tenderloin area... and it wasn't very pleasant! I still love San Fran though. I looked at a lot of apartments but just found this one that I fell in love with. Looking back I really should have taken the studio I looked at in Castro. I ended up feeling a lot safer there and always shopped at the Safeway & Whole Foods nearby there.

Carmen B, you are certainly correct in that my boyfriend DOES NOT have any such thing lined up, and I don't have any of the other two things Mediocrity recommended either. =( But I agree with you about moving to SF at a later time...hell, I know that I am going to move NOLA too, at some point. I really love travel and I've already done a cross-country move before, and I have to say I find it really amazing. Every city has a spirit of its own, and there are just some city spirits I have to make friends with, and SF and NOLA are definitely on that list.

Kylea2, you've been so very helpful, thanks for all your advice and links and such. The BF and I were checking out Nitro online, from what we could tell it seemed like a really cool club. The only worry I really have now is that what if I work at Nitro and it doesn't work out? I suppose I could always drive into Colorado but I hope the commute wouldn't be horrendous. It kind of freaks me out not having many options. Also, I was looking at Louisville and Broomfield apartments and I found the prices very affordable...but I also found some places for the same price right in Boulder! I was wondering if there's a bad part of Boulder I should stay clear of or not.

I've never actually lived in Boulder, but I've hung out there. I'll ask my friends just to be sure. Boulder is awesome though. It's totally a college town but there's also a lot of rich people sort of living a hippies. It's very new-age eclectic type of city with coffee houses, tea houses, lot of different types of health food, book stores, yoga/pilates places and such. The bicyclists even have their own lane on the roads in most of the city.

Here's some links to photos of Pearl Street Mall, where Nitro is located, to give you a good idea of what it's like:

    Go to Google maps: http://maps.google.com/
Put in 1124 Lawry Ln, Boulder, CO 80302 which is the club address and hit enter
Switch the mode on the right to "Satellite"
On the left zoom take the yellow human figure and put it one street over so it's on pearl. Google will zoom you into the street view and you can sort of "look around" the area by the club. It's very clean and crime is low.
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

Are there any decent clubs in NOLA where you can be mid-thirties up and still get hired and make money, (without hooking, of course!)...Also, where can I work in the summer and clear at least $100-200?

Penthouse, if you have no tattoos and look good for your age.
    Rick's Cabaret, same conditions apply.
Hustler, tattoos are permissible. I am in NOLA for the summer and work at Hustler, and do very very well. PM me if you have any specific questions.

Vackra and other NOLA ladies, do you have any safety tips on living in NOLA and working til the wee hours?

I'm a single woman, and I'm concerned about carjacking when leaving the club so late, on my way to go to the Interstate, if I decide to move to the burbs. Would getting a taser and a "fake man doll" be enough? I have a 12-year-old Honda Civic, but I'm afraid of a gang of thugs seeing that I'm a single woman, and, as such, easy prey. Also, if I lucked out on a place in the city that I could afford, is it too risky to drive home alone, and go to my apartment alone? Should I get a cab or someone to give me a ride so they can watch me enter my place? (I have lived in Philly before, so I have "street smarts," don't get me wrong!)
