    Default Cheap ways to juice fast?

    So, I've decided for multiple reasons that I want to start a juice fast. I have a juicer and I want to juice the produce myself, as I've heard more recommended than buying pre-made. Problem is, I'm pretty broke at the moment and I'm looking for recipes that can be done fairly cheaply.

    I know there are like one million fast threads but what I'm asking is specifically pertaining to cost effective methods of juice fasting. I'm planning to fast for 5 days minimum, probably more like 7 days, if that helps any. I've done long term water fasts before so I'm no stranger to fasts in general, but this will be my first juice fast.

    So anybody got any good recipes?

    Use apples or carrots as a base.. you can get those for cheap in bulk - then add whatever else you want. Oh but be careful the apples because theyre loaded with sugar which will have you buzzing like you drank a pot of coffee.

    ^^ Carrot juice is loaded with sugar as well. Be even more careful with grape juice- it has the highest sugar content.

    I wondering if drinking all that sugar will actually PUT weight on me instead of taking it off...but I guess its the good kind of sugars, right?

    Hi, out of curiosity why are you doing this fast?

    yes, there are different types of sugars, polysacharrides and monosacharrides. Some sugars(poly) are higher in the glycemic index which make them harder for the body to break down. Depending on your goal, that can be a good thing or a bad thing. good luck.

    I'm actually doing it to help transition myself into a healthier eating pattern. I've moved into a house full of people who eat the traditional American diet of overeating, over-sugaring, over-fattening. As a result my eating has been changed in a negative way, and I've gained a bit of weight. I want to juice fast to begin losing that weight, and prepare me for the raw diet I am planning on implementing. I don't like the way my body looks OR feels at all right now.

    Why not just adjust your eating habits and work out if you want to loose weight?

    Haha. Don't even get me started.

    I believe, OP, that Odwalla juice company sells a jug of juice whose blend is a 48hr juice fast. I saw it a lot in SF.

    Master Cleanse isn't really my deal. I'm looking to maintain a steady level of nutrients in my body...I don't want to go into starvation mode at all, I'm trying to help my metabolism, not harm it.

    Iris, as I said I'm doing this as a transitional step to a raw diet, so yes, I am adjusting my eating habits to help with losing weight... but its more than that, really. My body just feels so yucky from eating all this gross food, I want to fast to kind of clean my system out a little and then go back to eating clean, as I used to.

    Mediocrity, thanks! I'll definitely look into that.

    Thanks to everyone else btw, I'm definitely appreciating and using your tips

    No problem! When I was vegan, I used to pound two Odwalla super proteins a day so I could eat what I wanted witout stressing protein. Their stuff is so damn good. And good for you!

    This is the best suggestion thus far.

    The reason behind the "Master-Cleanse Diet" is to oxidize your body and cleane your digestive tract. Which is not a bad thing at all. However, when "Dieting" you also forgo many other things that are nutritionally necessary. ie., Vitamins, minerals, protiens, anti-oxidants etc.

    Therefore, it is still optimal to eat healthy and plentiful, and workout. Fiber and other anti-oxidants through a healthy diet will more than not perform the same type of cleansing as the "Master Cleanse".

    Thumbs up Re: Cheap ways to juice fast?

    Bravo! Juicing at home is both economical AND nutritious!

    When shopping for fruits & veggies, try the farmer's markets and Chinatown - they offer a great selection on the cheap.

    Try using foods such as celery, parsley and watercress. The health benefits are AMAZING!

    Juice & enjoy!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * 3 carrots
    * Handful of parsley
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * 2 apples
    * 2 celery stalks
    * 1 bunch watercress
    * 1 grapefruit, peeled

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * 3 carrots
    * 1/2 cucumber
    * 1/2 beet with the greens
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * 4 apples
    * 1 cup strawberries
    * 1-inch piece of ginger

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * 4 celery stalks
    * 2 carrots
    * 1 apple
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * 3 carrots
    * 1/2 beet

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    * 3 oranges, peeled
    * 1 cucumber (look for non-waxed cucumbers - the peel is loaded with minerals!)
    That looks like it would be a good one. Kale has a high fullness factor rating, so your stomach thinks its full faster than many other foods.
    That's exactly what I was thinking! I rarely eat carrots because they are loaded in sugar.
    Drink something with protein in it. Asparagus, watercress. Or grab one of those Odwalla protein drinks. They have soymilk in them, but mostly banana and stuff. Don't wear yourself out.
    Or you could just need a blood sugar boost. What are you drinking for your juice?
    Thanks Mediocrity, actually I just grabbed one of those protein drinks you mentioned on my way home from work, I didn't even read that yet, ha.
    I've been making juices from mostly carrots and apples, as well as drinking pure 100% organic juice from my health food store (the brand escapes me at the moment), also I've been implementing Bolthouse, Odwalla, and Naked. Mostly its been Blueberry, Vegetable, Green flavor wise.
    If you want to supplement your juices with something protein-based and well-rounded nutritionally, Whole Foods and similar stores sell Vega packets. They're not the tastiest, but I think they'd blend well with a home-juiced juice, and they're FULL of good stuff.
    Juicing is awesome and I absolutely LOVE it... But, going from an unhealthy diet to a juice fast (for any length of time, even just a few days) isn't the way to go. You need a transitionary period where you first rule out sugars and salts, then meats and dairy, then try raw, then juice. Maybe not exactly like that- but I've found that taking a few days to make the transition helps my moodiness that comes along with fasting.
