    Tired Cold Sores and Dancing

I get horrible cold sore outbreaks about twice a year. The cold sores are so bad, it basically takes up my whole mouth! When I get an outbreak do I call the club and let them know I wont be able to work until it heals (Which takes about a week or two)? Who else gets cold sores and what do you do about it?

I've gotten them since I was young and I HATE it! Take Lysine and Vitamin C supplements (all the time, not just when you have an outbreak) and always have Abreva on hand if you feel one coming.

About 3 years ago, I started getting dermal fillers injected in my lips. Since I have a history of cold sores, the doctor prescribed me Valtrex to take 24 hours before and after the procedure. Luckily, he gives me a full prescription. Anytime I feel one coming on, even if I'm just being paranoid, I take a Valtrex every 12 hours for 2 days. I haven't had a cold sore in over 2 years now .

See if you can get your physician to write you a prescription, because preventing them is always easier than trying to heal them.

    I hate those things!!!
I use a Compeed cold sore patch when I get them. It makes the cold sore heal quicker and stops you touching it. If you put it on correctly you can hardly see it:-)

Buy yourself some Lemon Balm (or Melissa) tincture and some St. Johnswort tincture. They are both available at most Wholefoods (Herbpharm is very high quality) tho, you may have to order the lemon balm specifically. Both of these applied together to your sores will heal them very, very quickly. I do mean QUICKLY!! They may also be taken internally and will also speed the healing process. You will also GREATLY benefit from doing research on vitamins and supplements that boost your immune system since these outbreaks probably deal directly with that. As with any and all advice you receive be wise and research on your own and seek out herbalists and other professionals before you attempt these treatments.
NOTE: st. johnswort taken internally in any substantial amount is containdicative for sunlight and can cause discoloration of the skin. However, the amount necessary for your applicaton should be of no concern. Please feel free to pm me if you would like more info. best of luck to you and happy healing. this is a problem you can manage!!

Hmm. I don't see the club allowing you to skip work because of that.. I know they wouldn't want to see it, but most managers ignore any type of problem, no matter how big and insist that without a doctor's note, your ass is in the club, or a hefty fine is added to your name.

I have had to go to a doctor and get a note every time anything happens where I can't make into work, even had to have a doctor's note on a doctor's note because I came back to work and had a bad reaction to my medication. Clubs love to issue fines, some actually make more on fines than what the dancer's pay to be there.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

^ I would think that any club with rather have you stay home for a week than come into work with what looks like a herpes outbreak. Guys are mean! Just stay home and plan ahead for it moneywise.

yea i agree with violastrings assuming its a reputable club. The last thing a club needs is the reputation for herpes on a dancers face. If they try to make you come in remind them of this.

I know, if your club wanted to make you work with a cold sore outbreak, then they probably make you work with swine flu or ebola.

If I were you, I would go in and talk to the manager in person when it happens. Let him see the cold sores with his own eyes.

Do you have a Valtrex prescription?
I had horrible cold sores about twice a year too ever since I was really young, and then I randomly happened to have a doctors appointment while I had one and was like "Oh, you don't use Valtrex? You should. Really."
I don't take it every day, just 2 pills when I think I'm getting one and then another 2 12 hours later, and it works SO WELL for me.
I was so pessimistic because nothing else had ever seemed to do anything at all, but with Valtrex it never gets to the nasty blistery stage. You know how at the beginning it's like those little white dots you can see under the skin that later burst into hideousness? It never gets past that, it just disappears.
Jesus, I feel like a drug salesman but seriously... if you haven't tried it it is so worth it.

What about abreva? I've never had cold sores, but back when I lived in the frozen north, I used to get really seriously chapped lips that would crack and bleed. I tried abreva out of sheer desperation and I swear it helped my lips heal faster.

It's supposed to help heal cold sores, and I don't know if it works, but you can buy it in the drugstore without a prescription so it's definitely worth a shot. At the very least, it's soothing and moisturizes well so it'll probably make you more comfortable while they heal.

Yeah, you should be able to get prescription. I don't know why they wouldn't, it's not like Valtrex is big on the black market, haha.
Abbreva does nothing significant for me. Maybe it does "shorten healing time" for a day or whatever it claims, but you still have a massive herp on your face for a week.
L-Lysine (the vitamin) may have been somewhat effective for me, but I still did get outbreaks. Nothing works like Valtrex.

The sores don't have to be visible to get a prescription from your doctor
