Mods please remove this if it is inappropriate.Ok, one of the things that I have done is search SW for the country I live in (South Africa) and I'm a bit dismayed at the negative perception of SA that pervades this place.First the crime - since this always crops up first. Yes crime is a problem. Us South Africans don't do ourselves any favours since all we do is bitch about it to anyone who listens. However if you take reasonable precautions things are fine. Most of the horrific stuff happens in the slums. However, go out in groups late at night. Stay out of dodgy areas, if you want to live here move into a secure housing complex in a good area.

About the cities. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. People are laid back. If you want to go on a working holiday, make some money, meet people and have a great time this is your destination.

I had an Aunt that lived in South Africa, in what was supposed to be a safe neighborhood and she was found strangled in her own apartment, so not that you're wrong, but the rep isn't entirely undeserved.

No, it isn't undeserved. I live here, I have to deal with the reality. Us South Africans are just masters at advertising our country as some sort of crime capital so the rest of the world doesn't realise that we have a lot more going for us.I've travelled a bit and there is something vibrant about SA that I haven't experienced anywhere else. Maybe there is truth in the saying that "Life is hard in Africa" so life just feels more vibrant.I actually wanted to delete the original post since I'm a bit sloshed and now realise it was probably a mistake then you replied. ):Apologies once again if this is a waste of bandwidth.

I think most North Americans have little to no personal experience with SA. What they do know about it, they see in the news or hear from others about the negative aspects of the country.

It certainly isn't in my top 10 places I'd like to visit due to the negative press about the country.

I think most Americans don't know much about any place except America, and then most of the time they only know about the particular place they live, honestly.

I know, and it is fair enough. I'd just like to add that Cape Town is a great place. If you aren't too hung up on getting rich and want a fun working holiday, I think stripping could be an awesome way to make some money, have fun and meet some interesting people. With the high HIV rates I would just suggest not offering any extras.

A quick smarmy comment about . The dances at Mavericks are R200 unless you are being ripped off. I think I had a dance with the same stripper. I didn't argue since she was worth a little more. Some of the Eastern European women there are amazingly beautiful.

If anyone is interested I'd be happy to answer questions.

I don't think he meant specifically stripperweb, but I've heard of dancer booking agencies there having a tough time recruiting from other countries. Dancers have been more than happy to go to places like Japan, European Union, Australia and North America, but South Africa has been a tough sell for most despite being "westernized".

You would have to be looking for it but yeah. Whenever someone expresses an interest in the place everyone mentions the latest shocking soundbyte or crime statistic from the news and it is left at that.
I figure I'd be happy to give a different balanced perspective on the place if anyone is truly interested in life here.

Well I confess to being relatively uninformed about SA, yeah. Other than the pervasive apartheid/crisis stuff from past years, anyway. I can't imagine it's all that much worse a place for a guy like me to get stranded in than certain neighborhoods in Detroit, like where I grew up for instance . But maybe I'm kidding myself.

And yeah some of these eastern European women are amazing, it is true...

Unless you have experienced it it is difficult to describe. You have the first and the third world living side by side. This has obvious issues. Most of the time you are going to be living a first world lifestyle but you just need to be aware of the dangers. As for the dancers, you're all probably pretty jaded but you might be interested in Maverick's webpage which has a gallery of their dancers.

Damn, just looked at the date on LuvlyDancer's post linked above and if it was the Saturday (4th) we were there the same night. Small world.

Oh...well, the little I do know about the country wouldn't inspire confidence in my safety, especially if I was woman, and especially a single woman. I understand that rape in that country is a very serious problem, no?
