You don't need it for the clubs, and some clubs don't have poles. My advice is go see the clubs you want to audition at to see if they have poles, then go ask if you can sit in on a pole class to watch how the students are treated. Some instructors don't like people in their classes who actually dance. Also, make sure your instructor is qualified to be teaching pole classes... there's lots that teach and are not qualified to.

I got called out (repeatedly) when I grudgingly admitted I dance....she fuckin pried it out of me too
I took them for a month, I just quit. It was more like pilates than pole dancing. I learned some neat pole tricks, but they weren't anything I actually use at the club. My instructors didn't really like dancers either.

In my experience, the classes aren't worth it. You can learn more from girls you work with than from a class taught by a woman who probably hasn't ever stripped, and who may have a grudge against strippers.
However, if you haven't stripped before, it might be a good idea to take one, if you want to build up your confidence before you auditio.

How do these ding bats teach pole dancing but dont like or wanna teach strippers. Thats just retarted.

I take a pole class for an hour a week.I don't dance yet, but figured this will move my ass in some sort of shimmy that will be appealing in an audition. My instructor seems to not be against dancers, we wear skimpy clothes, she encourages sexiness and we wear real stripper shoes.

cuz they know that youll make money off of it.. kinda like buyinm a 10 dollar watch and selling it for 1000 lol
As WD said, I wouldn't do it unless you're looking to build your confidence. Unless you're dancing at a super nice/upscale place, it's actually a commodity to "look new". Guys like it when dancers don't look like professionals (or at least, a lot of guys like it). You might feel silly up there, but it's often a selling point.
Also, as others have mentioned, you'll learn all of the tricks you want to learn very quickly once you start working (unless all of the other girls are bitches). You'll also learn them much faster.
Anyway, there are a million other ways to be sexy without using the pole much. You can even just lean against the pole and achieve a much more sexy look than the girls who do crazy tricks. Pole work is definitely, definitely not essential to a stripper's repertoire for sex appeal.
i just came across this website
it's in san francisco and the owner and instructor started out as an exotic dancer
interesting...

It definitely depends on the instructor. The pole class I took had a great instructor. She had been a dancer and a gymnast. So she was very good and very resourceful. It was worth my money for sure.

^ Harsh, but soooo true. I love it when you can tell that a pole dance teacher has actually danced before--like LeighAnn on Youtube (or at least, I highly suspect that she has danced...).
I enrolled in a pole class taught in a dance studio in Albany. And it was a fucking joke. My friend (also a stripper) and I went together, brought our stripper shoes and everything. And the class was full of overweight middle-aged women. The first hour-long class was "how to walk sexy around a chair," and then, if you were really, really good, you got to progress to "how to walk sexy around the pole." And it wasn't even a real pole, it was just some steel bar bought at Home Depot or something.
But most of the women were totally uncomfortable wearing anything sexy, or wearing any kind of decent shoes, or trying to be sensual. My friend and I were getting lots of nasty looks. And the instructor was just as overweight as the rest of them, and had never been a stripper, but she swore that she went to a local club "occasionally," and the girls who did the pole tricks at strip clubs were all professionally trained and had to be insured by the club in order to even get on the pole.
Sooo, never went back to that class.

I guess I was lucky, in that the owner of the studio I learned in loves strippers and hires them to teach when she can. But, I learned more from youtube, cause every "advanced" class had a new girl. I was still having to spend the whole class watching people learn a basic invert after 6 months of classes.

You know, in a way, I'm glad to see that most pole dancing classes are so lame. Because it means that we still get to keep the heart of the art for ourselves. People can imitate us by taking classes, and I'll be damned if there aren't some fine pole dancers who've never set foot in a strip club in their lives. But I don't think I'm alone in believing that you can see the difference between a girl who's taken a bunch of classes and a girl who's a real stripper. There's a fluidity, a grace, a power, and a sexiness that just can't be taught.

Her name is Megan Dolby, and she runs a pole studio in East Lansing, Michigan. She doesn't advertise the fact that she was a dancer but it's pretty apparent. I want to take a class from her again it was fun! I'm not sure if she hired more instructers yet, but I'd only trust taking the classes from her. Even the beginners course was challenging and probably still would be to me. She drills the fuck out of you. She also keeps the class sizes small, which is very nice.

I'm in Ohio, and the place where I take pole dancing classes is awesome. It's actually what got me interested in becoming a dancer. :-) The lady who runs it used to be an exotic dancer and actually encourages any students who *want* to eventually dance in clubs. She teaches us pole tricks, but then shows us how to organize them into sexy dances, rather than just showing off individual moves. I agree that there is a large amount of "in the field" skill that can't be taught in a class, but it's a good place to learn basic things that you can build on to create your own unique style. Some places that teach dancing *are* lame, and get down on people who want to use it in a.... practical... manner. I definately would hate to be in a place like that, but if you can find a good place to teach you and you think it's worth spending money on then go for it! :-) It's been a real confidence booster for me and has helped me learn to improvise and just *feel* sexy doing my own thing.

First off I need to say that I don't promote learning on your own just from watching others who don't really know what they are doing. Repetitive injuries are serious business, and just because you don't think you are hurting yourself doesn't mean that you won't be long term.
What I would suggest to those of you who want to learn from a professional dancer is to call the studio and let them know you are becoming a dancer and want to take classes from someone who has actually danced. If they give you attitude it's probably not a studio you want to learn at, otherwise they will just tell you which instructors have real world experience in the clubs.
If you don't want to or can't take classes in person check out other professional dancers who offer classes online like Alena Downs or Nakita Kash, which can help you learn and avoid injuries.

I have to give a shout out to the studio I've been involved with for the last 5 months. This is Evolve studio in the Fairfax disctrict in LA. The owner is a sweet lady who loves dancers. Three of her instructors work in clubs. One features (the amazing Anjel Dust) and two work 4 shifts a week as dancers, like I do.
The others have gymnastic backgrounds and compete in pole competitions.
As far as being discriminated for being a dancer, one of the instructors sort of sneered at me for going topless and giving laps. The others are cool w/ it.
It's some of the students that have a problem w/ my dancing. But they can suk it
I've learned a lot. And the cool thing is that some of the instructors are into sexy, slow spins and sensuality, one is ballerina like, one is into strong arm holds, one stresses flexibility and so on. So, there is something for everyone. They even have a male instructor who teaches crazy tricks. (Bad Azz. He's on youtube).
(Formerly known as 'Korina')

FYI, dangerous advice.
I disagree and I applaud anyone who prepares for a career like the OP is doing.
I read in hustle hut that 99% of the dancers in this forum think it is a dangerous and bad idea to play newbie because guys will take advantage of you.
You should have done your research before you spent your money! 90% of the classes I teach are to regular women trying to learn how to be comfortable in their own skin. This is why I ask questions for every new potential student before she signs up to get an idea of what her goals are. I place them according to their goals. I would NEVER have put you two in that class and would have suggested what I suggest for all dancers and potential dancers... PRIVATE LESSONS!
Again, NORMAL! Taking 6 months to invert is more than normal for most of my students! However- most classes are progressive and shouldn't have a new girl in an advanced class! That's just bad biz!
I somewhat agree. Without seeming arrogant, I believe that I have grace, fluidity and sexiness as a stripper. I also know that I am a fantastic teacher. When I teach this to my students it rarely catches. IMO it is hard to understand the movement without participating in its origin. I do have a motto though: "You cannot have grace without strength". That is strength in: muscles AND confidence.
Also, would you take music lessons from someone who has never performed live? I believe the same to applies to all arts. You really can't teach unless you know everything about the subject which, IMO includes performance!

If you have the time and money, go for it.
When I started dancing, I was broke, a full-time student, and working a min. wage job. I didn't have time for pole dance lessons, so I just learned on the job.
I have nothing to gain or lose from advising you here, I'm not selling dance lessons like Nakita. Its not going to help you make more money. But it can help you improve you endurance, agility, and give you something interesting to do onstage.
I personally didn't like doing to much pole work on stage. Its too easy to injure yourself, then you're out of work with no comp or benefits.

I'm referring to "need" as in it is not essential. In other words, she can audition and start working NOW. There's no reason to hold off on dancing until after you've had pole dancing classes. I'd venture to say that probably 90% of the girls on this site auditioned and got hired without taking a pole dancing class. I think the pole is wonderful to learn, but not essential to know in order to be hired and start working. If the case were the other way around I would have never begun dancing because pole dancing classes weren't even formally offered when I started dancing years ago.
