It seemed like a dream come true for a single mom struggling to make ends meet and facing the possibility of eviction. Lynita Regis of Bellevue, Wash., told KOMO-TV she was stunned when she went to an ATM and saw a balance of $271,366.01. The number grew even larger over the next few days.
"My son was like, 'Mom, keep the money, keep the money,'" Regis said. Regis admitted she was tempted, saying, "It could change my life." But ultimately she couldn't stomach the deception. She reported the error to the bank.
"At the end of the day, are you gonna sell your soul for $271,366.01?" she said.
The money actually belongs to King County, KOMO said. Regis, who previous worked for the county jail, mistakenly received a debit card that gave her access to the adult detention center account.
Regis paid her rent out of her own money, but her account is now $3 overdrawn.
