Default Does art affect you emotionally?

I don't care what you call personally call art (movies, pop songs, classical music, opera, poetry, painting, novels, etc...). The reason I am asking the question is that I am currently watching the movie "The Rules of Attraction"; not necessarily the best movie ever, but there is a scene of a girl committing suicide by slitting her wrists that, imo, is well done, but very disturbing. I am actually in a depressed mood now because of watching this. Just wondering if anyone else has similar experiences.

Quite often. And with many different things, so no, you're not alone.

Referring to another thread. I typed something that sounded very proper and anal, so I commented on it by saying that I sounded like a gay English teacher.

And if you have to explain the smiley it's not doing its job. (<demonstrating proper use of it's vs. its)

No. Yours was fine. Guessing this is not the type of thread to generate a lot of traffic, but at least you did respond. Right now, it's just another "cool kids" thread.

^ I was referring to your other thread where you said that excessive use of smileys can clarify. I did not want any confusion you see.

It lets me maintain my sense of superiority if no one knows what I'm talking about. I can just pretend it's them.

About what I normally do when I travel, but it will be difficult working from home tomorrow. At least I have a workout with my trainer at 11.

I think art is supposed to affect people emotionally. Possibly as good an explanation as any of its purpose.

But that's why I usually avoid any of the serious heavy drama type movies, I don't want to get depressed.

^I guess my question was badly worded. Art is of course supposed to provoke a response; I guess I'm more curious about the extent of the response. Caught in the moment vs. depressed (or happy, or shocked, etc...) for an evening, vs. life will never be the same again.

Good art moves people in a more profound pronounced way.
Hence why art is so subjective.

What people like/react to differs greatly from person to person.

k, maybe I'm just feeling silly for being affected by "pop" art... although some movies have completely altered my belief system... maybe I'm just too easily influenced.

I don't think movies and music (for the most part) qualify as art. When you have so many layers and the only purpose is to 'make money' (they will reshoot if a focus group doesn't like a scene).

I enjoy a good movie, but only get riled up on occasion. It's more 'I saw a movie, cool'.

As for real art (ballet, opera, theatre), ohhhh man (on this forum maybe 'ohhhh woman') I do get into a high state of emotion that can last for hours and still give an emotional response days or even months later.

As for art (painting drawing, etc.), not so much, but if it is a negative (piss christ), it usually elicits a negative emotion on the 'author' for being an unoriginal dumbass.

lol You are wrong. Not to mention that I didn't say anything of writers/ books, but hey, the cows are only in it for milk.

But if you are going to bring it up, writing books is more like theater and not movies.
