Do you get regular MRIs? If so, does your insurance pay for it? Do you pay for it? How much does it cost? Have you had a rupture in your gel implants?

You might have more luck asking this question on a site specifically geared towards breast augmentation like www.implantinfo.com.

I just got mine a year ago. You're supposed to go once every 3 years or so. Since I haven't crossed that bridge yet, I have no idea whether or not my insurance will cover the cost.

Mine are saline but I did consult on silicone implants- where did youhear this? Is it to check for leaking? Maybe it's a new or local (to you) law but I've never heard of this

I've had my gels since 2004 and have never had an MRI. I'm not sure how they can leak as they are a solid unit, not filled like saline implants are. I return to my PS every year as I am a study patient and get paid for my yearly return checkup.
Maybe there was an earlier study that required annual MRI?

I'm going for a consult on Wednesday and they had me watch an informational video that suggested getting an MRI 3 years after surgery and every 2 years after that. It is to check for ruptures.
I was under the impression the gels don't leak. It's a solid cohesive gel, so it doesn't ooze into your bloodstream or anything like previous liquid silicone did.
I'm having gels put in this thursday actually...

They are able to leak, but it would be a very slow leak...thus the need for an MRI. The chances of even your physician detecting a leak through a breast exam are pretty low, I think I remember reading somewhere around 30% or less.
Also, if they do rupture, the leaking silicone would typically be contained within the capsule of scar tissue surrounding the implant.

Gels can leak just like the salines can, but the only way to detect a leak is by having an MRI. Wear and tear from being in your body can break the shell down and cause it to weaken in some places, or you can have a defective one from the manufacturer.
Rupture rates tend to be low, but they can happen. I don't know that they recommend getting an MRI any more frequently than they do for regular breast exams though, and since mine are saline altogether it's not really a concern for me.

As per the dr. you are suppose to get a MRI at least every 4 years to check for a rupture in the implant. If your primary doctor refers to this then your insurance should pay for it.
I had my consultation today and we talked about the MRIs. Getting regular MRIs is a recommendation by the FDA. MY PS doesn't think its necessary.
