I don't go to tanning beds, so it's not the bacteria that some of you speak of that dandruff shampoos help.

I find that I get the most splotches when SOMETIMES fake tanning. I use SUN labs fake tanner. Other times, I can tan and there aren't any splotches at all. I've only seen this type of skin discoloration on one other person. Then again, I don't really go around looking for it.

Does anyone know what causes this? It's very unattractive and I feel self conscious. It's easily covered by makeup, but that sweats off when giving LDs.

Are you sure you're just not mottled?

The idopathic kind is pretty harmless.

That's tinea versicolor. I had that all over my midsection. It's a yeast fungus but a harmless one which everyone has on their skin. But in unlucky people like you and me the yeast fungus gets out of control, especially in the summer.Dont worry it's not contagious and you can get rid of it my using a selenium sulfide 2% lotion or shampoo on the area for a few weeks.Plus wash your hair at least once a week with a selenuim sulfide shampoo like selsun blue, because this is where th yeast grows from.If you want to go the easier route go to the doctor and get a antifungal pill called fluconazole. Just 2 pills will keep you clear for an entire year or more. The bad side about the discoloration is that you need the sun to get the color back after you cured it.oh and that bacteria you talk about needing shampoo for is not caused my tanning beds, because it is not contagious.people just think tinea versicolor is caused by tanning beds because it becomes more noticable after tanning.

I've had it before too, and have NEVER used a tanning bed. The dandruff shampoo works just fine for me.
