    Default Absinthe

I recently received an order of La Boheme absinthe from the Czech republic. Absinthe was recently legalized to be sold in bars here and is becoming a popular drink of choice in many U.S. bars, but unfortunately it is offered sans the thujone (the active chemical compound in wormwood). Well, I finally got to try "real" absinthe, 35 mg of thujone per kilogram.

It's really interesting..... it is extremely strong, however when the alcohol buzz wears off the "high" remains. I would compare it to mushrooms, but much milder, and kind of like marijuana also, but you're more awake. Instead of becoming tired and passing out from the alcohol, this awake ness kicks in, and you don't feel tipsy. This lasts all night. You are more perceptive to your environment, and things seem around you seem alive. Just though I'd share my experience! No green fairies yet.... but it's cool to drink it and know that this is what Ernest Hemingway and Oscar Wilde used to drink.

La Boheme is probably the only 'good' Absinthe to come out of the Czech republic. Until the EU food and drug 'harmonization' rules resulted in the re-legalization of Absinthe in western european countries in the late 1990's, Czech was one of the few countries where Absinthe remained legal since the near worldwide ban in the early 1900's. As a result, most Czech absinthe was made using 'bathtub gin' methods !!!!! LaBoheme was and is an exception to this rule ... LaBoheme does do the 'real deal' i.e. real distillation and real thujone content, but it is also fairly nasty in terms of lack of smoothness. LaBoheme does have one virtue for those who are not big 'licorice' taste fans though - unlike the French and Swiss Absinthes, LaBoheme like other Czech recipe Absinthes does not use very much Anise. Since I don't like overwhelming licorice flavor, LaBoheme is actually one of my favorites ... as long as I don't skimp on the sugar cubes (i.e. drinking it straight will rip your guts out)

If you really want to check out a 'proper' Absinthe though, I'd recommend ordering up some top shelf brand from Switzerland or France. You're absolutely correct that the recently released American "Absinthes" must all have severely reduced thujone content to get past FDA requirements ( less than 10 ppm) ... which also kills the unique Absinthe 'effect'. In comparison, european Absinthes may be up in the 30-40 ppm range. In other words, any 'Absinthe' being directly sold in American liquor stores or bars has had its 'balls' cut off !

Nice, I'm so jealous! I was in Europe for a while last spring, and found some absinthe bars, but I guess I was already too drunk to notice the actual absinthe effect (oops! sad...)
I'm big on ganja, but have had some real bad times tripping in the past (mushrooms, lsd) so I'm a little scared off but most people say it's nothing like tripping on either of those, much much more mild. would you agree?
i'll have to look into ordering some legit absinthe. any good websites anyone knows of?

I ordered a bottle from the CR years ago. It was very strong, certainly had the desired drug like effect...but it gave me a case of vertigo that lasted a week! And it was pretty constant. I could still walk around, but I was dizzy all the time.

For a very odd reason that I don't care to get into, I was required to learn how to make absinthe in one of my classes. I've never actually had it though and have no interest. Anyhow, a few years later one of those absinthe bars popped up in a city near me after the "legalization" and a few of my friends were very excited despite me telling them that it wasn't real absinthe. It's always interesting to hear about other people's experiences though. Thanks for sharing!

I don't really like any Absinthes with strong anise flavoring ( i.e. the licorice taste is so strong it threatens to come back up !). Before I 'retired' I wound up at an 'industry' party and got pursuaded (don't ask) into trying Marilyn Manson's personal recipe ManSinthe - ... which had so strong of an anise/licorice flavor that I DID wind up hurling !

But there are a fairly large number of Absinthe brands available that don't use anise in the recipe.

And seemingly all Czech absinthes and most German absinthes go easy on the anise. Which is one of the reasons that LaBoheme is also one of my personal favorites.

Oooh, I've wanted to try absinthe for YEARS! I learned the recipes and processes for distilling it myself, but never actually got up the nerve to do it (it's legal to run a still for personal consumption ONLY where I live, but with the drink itself being illegal...) When I heard that "absinthe" was finally legal again in the USA, I nearly jumped for joy- until I found out that it contained little or NO thujone. I nearly giggled just a few weeks ago when my sister mentioned it being legal again and she didn't understand how the lack of thujone was important until I said "it's the part of it that makes you high!"
In the years that I've read up on it, I've heard wonderful things about La Fee. Before I go out on a limb and try it, though, I want to know- just how bitter is it really? While that licorice flavor (something about it brings the feeling of wax to my throat) will make me vomit, I don't want to waste a single drop of such an expensive treasure because it was too bitter for me to swallow. How many sugar cubes would you recommend?

^^^ to answer your question to the best of my addled vacation memory, Bohemian LeFee had very little licorice flavor ... instead it tasted more like citrus and spices and caramel. As to the bitterness of the pure stuff, I really can't answer since in Pilsen they're into the 'flaming sugar cube' ritual i.e. my Bohemian LaFee experience was one part absinthe, 2 flaming sugar cubes melted into the absinthe (setting the absinthe on fire as well) and then 3 parts water poured over the sugar cubes to both put out the flame and create something like a 'louche' when the 'sugar water' and absinthe mixed in the glass.

I'd also point out that LaFee also produces several different absinthes to different recipies ... and it is only the Bohemian La Fee that goes easy on the licorice flavor. The gang in Pilsen also had me try Parisienne LaFee, and I had all that I could do to keep it down due to the overpowering anise / licorice flavor.

As far as I know, the FDA cert only applies if you are attempting to sell 'homemade' absinthe. In theory you can whip up a batch with as much thujone as you want if it's for 'personal consumption'. Actually this leads to a curious possibility. Because I often make my own soaps and lotions I have dealt with people who routinely 'distill' herbal essences. They actually have established some interesting and affordable connections with an 'old school' maker of copper distillation equipment. I've got half a mind to buy one of these stills to try my hand at both my own herbal essences but also for some wine base homemade absinthe ...

What do you think ? The same style of still ( but much larger capacity ) is now being used by one of the herbal essence distillers to produce a new 'product line'

I'll keep that in mind when I try it, and maybe try out my own blends with the parts sugar and water to absinthe as I go along and figure out what I prefer myself. What a fun experiment!

But, Melonie, I suppose you should go right on ahead and try it out if you really want to. Just be careful, because the FDA has always been kinda backasswards and unclear, and what one personal calls "personal consumption", another can call "distributable amounts"

^^^ actually, the 'kits' I have seen are all based on 'infusion' i.e. the equivalent of making absinthe 'tea'.

I'm proposing the actual distillation of wormwood and other herbs in a wine base ! Hopefully this should separate a lot of the 'impurities' that are present in the herbs included in the 'kits' which probably contribute heavily to the nasty taste.

I hear you ! But A. my primary purpose for the distilling equipment is to extract herbal essences from garden herbs like lavender and chamomile for use with my homemade soaps and lotions. Also, B. my 'adopted' country doesn't really care what the hell people are distilling or growing, drinking or smoking LOL ( as long as you aren't competing with the smugglers / gov't itself LOL LOL).
