    Question Pushy Makeup/Hair Artist

    Hey everyone,

So I began dancing for the first time on Monday, and I've been doing really well, even on slow nights. I've been pulling in over $200 every night and feel really confident that I'm beginning to learn how things work and am developing my hustle. Last night, though, I got some of the wind taken out of my sails when the owner of the club I work at introduced me to the hair/makeup artist. He only works on friday and saturday and for $20ish you can get your hair and makeup done.

Now, I'm not the best with makeup, and generally just wear foundation, eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss. My hair is chin length, very dark and naturally curly (I'm mixed), so I just let it curl up around my head of it's own free will. It's not messy or anything, but can fluctuate from "neat and tidy" to "sex hair" throughout the night (I keep an eye on it). I actually like my hair because most of the girls who work there are blond or have light brown straight hair (it is a primarily caucasian area). But, when I'm talking to this guy last night he started going on and on about how I should go buy a hair extension to make my hair longer and how I need a more dramatic look and should wear more makeup.

He is a pretty good artist with definate skill at doing makeup, etc, but I like a more playful naieve look, rather than a dramatic stage-esque appearance that he likes to create. One of the girls at work got hers done and told me that she didn't really like how spiky he made it (she tends to go for a softer look, and the one he gave her was very sharp and dramatic). He was also kinda boastful about how all the girls he "fixes" are constantly in the back rooms with customers rather than out on the floor dancing and if I bring him a hair extension and let him do my makeup he can guarantee that I'll be making $200 or more every night consistantly... but I'm doing that anyway...without hair extensions... or tons of makeup... hmmm

I know he's a "professional" and all, and getting dancers to let him decorate them is his job, but should I really take his advice and pay him to do my makeup/hair or just keep going the way I'm going? It was the first time since starting that I doubted my own sex appeal, and I had to pep-talk myself later that night to keep my spirits up enough to keep going until close. The customers I've met all say I'm beautiful and have a cute personality, so should I trust them more? Thanks ladies! I always appreciate your advice!

If you feel confident and make money then carry on with your look, it's good too look different anyway, don't listen to him he just wants to make his money and if the custies love your look well theres no more to say.

If you like what you're doing, and it's working for you, keep it up! On another note
(And this is just plain curiousity), it would be interesting to see what he could do-I would opt out on the extensions though.

I actually had a similar experience yesterday. My work has several makeup artists. The one is awesome and after trying them all out I only get my makeup done by her. Well yesterday she wasn't there and the house mom tried to push me (she was REALLY pushy) into getting my makeup done. I politely declined. The makeup artists are there to make money. If you are doing good and are confident then don't waste your time or ask for a freebe and see how you like it. But it sounds like your look is working for you.

If ALL the girls have long hair and you have shorter hair that looks good on you than def. stay away from extensions (they ruined my hair!) But I'd give the make-up a try, at least once. tell him you want a more natural look. You'd be surprised what a difference a little bit can make.

Everyone in the club has their own hustle. It sounds like the makeup artist is using his on you.

Trust the people who are giving you their money. Not the people who are trying to take yours.

Yeah, he is there working too. He's just giving you a sales pitch. For the record, in over four years I've used a makeup artist twice.

:-) Thanks everyone. I may at least give the makeup part a try, but there is no way I'm going to put extensions in my hair. I like looking different from the long-haired girls (who are definately the majority), and since I'm growing it out, it will be longer eventually anyway.

this man is an idiot shwna yes he's trying to make money but he's trying to do it by undermining your confidence so if thats his hustle i dont think much of it! nobody can guarantee how much money you make especialy not this man)! girls you've spoken to havn't been happy with his work, if you aren't as happy as your look after one of his make overs than before you'll probably loose out on money! i would use the same process of undermining on him and just tell him something like you get your hair cut at a specialist jamacian salon or something and you dont think he has the expertise to start cutting your hair!

try it once, if you don't like the results then you can tell him you didn't make money after using him. if your money goes up, you can learn the techniques he's using and bypass him altogether.

i can't stand people like this, but sometimes you have to give in a little to shut them up.

OR you can just tell him straight up that you want to save dramatic makeup for a special occassion, like a party.

Id try the MUA once, but don't do extensions! Being different can make you more money, and confidence is the most important thing.

Try out his services and see how you like it.

I'm a reformed celebrity make up artist for film and TV. The actors don't know anything about make up and hair and are left to the devices of the make up artist. The actresses always think they know more about make up than the make up artist despite the years of training for film and television make up.

With that being said, try it and see if you like it. In my early days of Vegas and before the make up thing my girlfriend and I went to a counter in the mall before work. The woman put more make up on than I was comfortable with (very heavy black on the eyes) but my girlfriend said to shut up and not touch it because it looked good.

When I got to the club the guys were complimenting me on the make up! So what we think wont work sometimes in the eyes of others is exactly what we need.

I've been very daring with my make up for years (think Amy Winehouse eyeliner) and remind myself that "it's theater" and sometimes go without make up at all. Very rare but I still make money.

Just a perspective. Try it and see how you like his services you might actually make more than 200 with a played up look or less if it really doesn't suit you.

Stripping is about stepping out of reality and guys are used to seeing women in everyday make up to a show girl look may be a nice touch.

I agree with the hair extensions, all makeup artists try to sell them because they profit so much from them. I think if you know your hair and are comfortable doing it, then there is no need.

However, I don't think trying a makeup artist once will actually do the trick. I operate all ventures on a 3 strike rule. If you only try it once and you have a bad night, that doesn't mean it was the makeup. So, try it 3 times on 3 different days or nights. Try it on Wed, Fri and Sun- or whatever days you work. Try to alternate the days so you truly get the feel of being done up and then not done up. See how you feel about it after that and then make your decision.

I actually am in full support of dancers getting their hair/makeup done because what we are selling is a fantasy. You don't look like the fantasy girl if he could meet you the way you look at Walmart. JMO. I have been fortunate to get my makeup professionally done for photoshoots several hundred times for free and have been able to pick up what they have done to me so I can recreate it. I call it stage makeup because there is Nakita Kash and then that other person who doesn't wear all that stuff. It truly helps me get into the stripper character. If you met me normally, you would think me a tomboy!

Wow, I didn't expect to get this many replies! Thanks for all the advice everyone! Nakita Kash, I like your idea about the 3 strike rule. If I ever have enough money to pay him for three different nights (lol), then I'll definately try it. ^_^

Hey- you should tell him that if he's really as good as he says he is, he'll let you do a test run with his makeup and hairstyling, and if you don't make a significant amount more money, then you don't pay him.

besides, extensions are usually straight, on curly hair they don't work unless your hair stays straight when straightened (i'm lucky, mine does- but lots of girls with wavy/curly hair wear straight extensions and it doesn't look good).

Nikita- I disagree. Some guys fantasy is the "girl next door" look, not everyone wants a playboy model.

^^srry to threadjack, but I just had an interesting debate with a former (well, my fav ever), strip club dj. He said he was always happy when there were the GND types in the club because he felt that custies thought they would actually have a chance to take these girls home. Whether they did or not, doesn't matter. They actually chose those girls because of the possibility that woudln't be there with the barbies.

Ok, I get that- and I have a HUGE BUT to be inserted here however I won't go there because that is not what we are talking about.

IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW: I am an exotic dancer that does not have blond hair, fake boobs (A cup and proud lol), NOT ONE tattoo or piercing (ears exempt). I technically am GND and I still make sure my makeup is glam at the club. JMO
