Default Michigan proposing $250 dancer license

Still in the talking about it stage in the legislature, but unsurprisingly local governments who would get the money are championing it as a good idea.

    (More info)

Apparently they want wait staff, DJs, security, management, and basically anyone making money in the building to have one of these.

Hmmm - sounds like Vegas. Except doesn't Vegas only require the people handling money to have a background check and some sort of card?

These fees always come when times are hard but never leave when things get back to normal.

yes, and vegas was wise enough to make their card affordable, especially as you basically need a sheriff's card for any job.

this would be in addition to the dance cards you need in romulus, or in detroit.... you're looking at over $500 to be able to work.

yeah, i'm pretty glad i moved out of michigan.

^^ Yep, Detroit and a few other areas require them. However, I've never had trouble working clubs there without one.

well, it's a good thing you haven't been caught! vice can be quite nasty, however most clubs pay them off so they get a warning when a raid is coming.... i personally was too paranoid to work without a card.

i get homesick sometimes, i miss flight club from before it got dirty.

this may turn out to involve a whole lot more than simply paying a one time $250 license fee. if it follows along the footsteps of New York and California dancer 'license' laws (see industry insight forum), it could very well also involve payroll and income tax overtones for the clubs and for the dancers.

That wouldn't be so great... but I'd love to see some of these states put more effort into making their laws concerning dancers a lot more clear!

It would be nice if these licenses also involved some sort of quality control, like a medical or accounting license :-)

Besides making a list of sex workers and garnering a few extra dollars what possible benefit would the state or the dancers or even the club get from this?

To me it is just an excuse to run this class of sex workers out of business by fees, intimidaton etc. It would make better sense to do background checks on just club management itself.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

^^^ Uh, I don't know about you but personally I'd like ALL of the staff to be required to have background checks.

^^ I don't work there. I think most all of them are incompetent, exploitative crooks. Most all the rest are just jerks who can't find any other way to make a living than being a semi-gigolo.

Wait, let me see if I have this right. You believe that all staff in strip clubs are 'incompetent, exploitative crooks' or 'semi-gigolo(s)' ??

That's news to me and my dj husband, thanks! Oh, and the myriad good and supportive friends that I've made over my years in the biz. As well as an insult to several members of this board.

    Sheesh. Judgemental much?

are we just referring to the clubs in michigan, or in general?

detroit has been dirty for a while. it started getting really bad in late 2006, and I could barely stand it when I moved to vegas in april of 2007. not familiar on contact at the vu's, but i definately can vouch for the other clubs.... and let me tell you, flight club wasn't the worst.

^^ Just Michigan. I know a lot of girls who travel to Ohio to get away from it.

All except for the ones all of you like of course. And from posts in SW there are plenty you don't like.
