    Default Wine, my new love!

I've mostly been a beer drinker my whole life, and not very much beer at that. Lately, though I've really enjoyed drinking and cooking with wine. I never drink more than 2 glasses (6 oz serving) in a single day, but I like to have a glass in the evenings after dinner.

I've discovered Pinot Gris, and enjoy it a great deal. I also like a nice syrah. What's your favorite?

i like the stuff that i would drink at church (well, when i used to go to church )

i actually went wine tasting once in Solvang. went to the place where the movie Sideways was filmed. i think its called Kalyra. ended up buying a bottle of some orange flavored wine that was good. all the rest were to bitter for me, so i guess im not a refined gentleman yet, lol.

Lambrusco is an awsome wine to have with italian food.

I am a big wine person also. I prefer whites if I am drinking it alone but with food I like a "fruity" red. I also like champagne and sangria but I'm Porteguese and would be like disowned or something if I didn't drink wine!

I love Riesling and Pinot Noir. Prosecco is also amazing.

I'd suggest going to a wine tasting if you want to get to experience more flavors. That's how I discovered I like Riesling!

    Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio
Light, crisp and refreshing - apple + pear flavors.
I like it paired with thinly sliced korean pears, tart granny smith apples and fresh cheeses like brie, goat's chevre and mozzarella. But be careful with anything peppery! Pepper totally kills the apple/pear flavors in the wine. Light salads (greens w/beets, goat's cheese, sliced apples and candied walnuts = deelish!). Also rocks alongside pasta w/cream sauces.

    Opus One Cabernet
Lovely dark fruit + licorice flavors. Expensive, but wonderful on special occasions! Aged hard cheeses pair well with Opus cabs. I like aged sharp cheddar, gouda, jack and parmigiano reggiano. I don't eat meat, but hear that this wine is excellent with lamb and kobe steaks. Oh, and the wine needs to breathe for about 45 mins to really open up!

    Inniskillin
Aromatic orange blossom, tangerine, papaya + lychee flavors. Canadian icewine is such a great dessert wine - sweet like nectar! They harvest the grapes after they naturally freeze on the vine. Blue cheeses, like gorgonzola + roquefort are divine!

    Martini & Rossi Asti Spumante
I always get teased for this one, but i say fuck it. Gimme a bottle of Asti + a jacuzzi and i'm a happy camper! It's all about personal preference, not about mispronouncing the labels or spending mad $$$

Btw - callista is right about going to a wine tasting. The tapas + wines are already paired up. That way you an focus on finding your likes/dislikes and enjoying yourself!

    Chardonnay! Always and forever

My two favorites are Rombauer and La Crema. Perfect to enjoy in bed while watching tv and relaxing.

I also had a demi-sec while I was in Paris called "Vouvre" but haven't been able to find it in the states It was a refreshing sweet white wine.

    Yeah!

You have a ton of wineries around you . Go visit in person, meet the winemaker, see where the grapes are growing ect. ! It will add a whole new dimension to the experience when you start to get to know certain wineries/the people behind the wine.

Winoholic over here! Champagne and cabernet sauvignons, they are at the top of my list. But lately I've fallen for a 2007 pinot grigio, Laird. It's so deliciously summer.

Haha, looking at my avatar (haven't been on here in awhile) that pic goes well w/this thread. It's me in Vegas cradling my ba-ba, a magnum bottle of Dom. One of the best nights ever.

As a rule, my tastes in wine are similar to tastes in women: full- bodied, red.(lingerie, acc.) But, then, I have broken the rules at times.

I haven't tasted a wine that a really didn't like. Ontario wines are usually what I buy, but I'm not fussy. I even like homemade or u-brew type wines.

    This is definitely my favorite.

Although, I've recently been trying Cavit and it's less expensive and tastes similar.

With that said, I'm certainly not picky with my wine. Give me a glass of Charles Shaw's Chardonnay or Cabernet, and I'm all set.

    Gotta love Trader Joes

Omg! Me too! I heart Trader Joes and $2.99 wine!

Just picked up a Sauvignon Blanc from Duckhorn... one of my all time faves!

    *pours everyone a glass*

I'm a sweet type of person. I love the reislings and moscatos. I drink certain whites and certain reds that has a smooth ending. Most of the reds I drink with beef. I collect wine from out of the country because a lot of it you can't find in the u.s. and if you do, it'll run around 5 to 600 dollars a bottle. So I have a lot of wines no other restaurant in the states have. I really love it, because it's history behind the bottles.

Agreed on reislings. Especially if it is a German export.

I'm also in love with another type of German wine called Gewurtztraminer ... which is difficult to find in the USA and impossible to find down here !

Ooh! I'm with you on the Gewürztraminer! It's very similar to the Canadian icewine - sweet like nectar and fruity.

    I'm a complete wine whore.

Cabernet: Caymus, Joseph Phelps "Insignia", Trefethen "Halo", anything Far Niente or Nickel and Nickel, Grgich Hills.

Pinot Noir: Chalone, or any burgundian style Pinot

    Super Tuscan: Tignanello, Sassicaia, Salaia

Basically I love any dry tannic red wine.

Wow JD, that's an impressive Cal Cab list there.

Personally I've given up on Opus One. And I still enjoy Silver Oak, but since I've lost my insiders at both wineries, I refuse to pay retail for either of those two.

I'm holding a great bottle of Nickel and Nickel I won at a charity raffle. Waiting for a special occasion dinner.

The real prize are 2 bottles of Harlan Estate (the Maiden, but still), which is still the best glass of wine I've ever had.

Paris, Oregon is home to some truly great Pinot Noir producers. It will be worth your while to work your way towards this varietal. Enjoy the journey.

I'm going on a winery tour today! I'm visiting Sokol Blosser, Erath, and Argyle wineries today. I'll let everyone know what it was like and where my faves were.

Erath is one of my favorites. The Willamette Valley in Oregon is the same latitude or longitude as the Burgundy region in France. A red Burgundy is basically the same grape as Pinot Noir. A true red Burgundy will literally feel like silk in your mouth, it's amazing. Also, the French wines lack the fruit flavors of American wines. A white Burgundy is basically Chardonnay. Fact of the Day. No but seriously, while you're out, look up Col Solare. It is another amazing Oregon wine.

Dirty Ernie, Opus One is too hyped up and commercialized for me. Do you like Silver Oak from Napa or Alexander Valley? I prefer the AV, it has softer fruit nuances.

I know a few restaurants in Houston where you can buy Gewurztraminer. It is hard to find, but if you go to some of the exclusive restaurants and wine bars, they try to compete with others so they'll bring in a couple that some other places may or may not have.

The only thing I use Opus for is gifts for those only familiar with big labels. I could get a really nice bottle for the same $60 the Opus costs me, but when given to newbies, the wow factor of the Opus name means more to them than a quality cab from a not so well known winery.

As for S.O. I do prefer the AV. I lack the palate to completely appreciate some of the cabs I've been fortunate enough to drink, but I know what I like.

My friend built a great outdoor kitchen and fancies himself the next Bobby Flay. He's always creating a new rub and grilling something up and inviting a group over. Considering he has a 500 bottle wine cooler with a large supply of Insignia and S.O., with a smattering of Shafer and Heitz, who am I to say no?
