So all those tanning lotions with bronzers are basically doubling our skin damage and photoaging!! Basically we need to wait 24 hrs after application if we want to avoid excessive sun damage. ACK, I'm a sunless tanner junkie.
A 2007 study showed that skin treated with dihydroxyacetone in similar concentrations to those in sunless tanner, produced 180% more free radicals when exposed to UV light than untreated skin. Erythulose produced similar results. There is some evidence that treatment with an antioxidant cream can somewhat negate this effect, but the concentrations would undoubtably have to be MUCH higher than anything available at a reasonable price.
I apologize, but I am unable to find the original article about this. I found the study results last winter while researching tretinoin's effect on DNA degradation and the shortening of telomeres, but decided to wait for summer tanning season to post. There is however a short note about it on wiki under Safety Considerations.
