    Default Bye-bye Facebook

I don't know about anyone else, but I gave FB a try and decided that it was more hassle than fun. My friends stopped calling me once we were in contact on FB, my customers and co-workers wanted to friend me, my stepson's friends were trying to friend me and there were all kinds of people from the stripping industry on my friends list, too.

My husband LOVES FB, and pouted after I deactivated my account. But old HS classmates were sending me messages with sexual innuendo. These were not guys I'd ever want to hook up back then, now it's just- blech.

I know a lot of people love Facebook, but I find it too be way too intrusive on my personal life. Especially with a teenager in the house, the connections are getting to the point I don't want my stepson's friend's parents to know that I am/was a stripper, ferchristsake.

Anyone else feel like FB is just too intrusive or am I just being paranoid?

Well I don't have the career issues you do (people don't harass a systems consultant), so I don't really have any problems. I am actually MORE in contact with people than I used to be because I am a horrible correspondent. For some reason, I don't have a problem making a quick comment on FB whereas I am too lazy to call/email/write. Also, I personally don't send perverted messages to old HS crushes, so I can't comment on that.

BUT, you do have the adult industry issues and the teenager issues, so I can see where that's a problem.

Yeah...I'm wondering the same thing Paris...about myspace too. I've got dancer friends, and some young family members on there, and I'm just not sure how I feel about it. I'm getting these update comments from the nieces that are just embarassing. It's a side of them I don't need to see. I don't get on those pages often, but when I do it's often: wtf?

I'm not gonna move too quickly on this, but FB and MySpace are under review for me.

I do not use Facebook but I do have a LinkedIn profile which details all my professional accomplishments. I call it "blowing my own horn" page. It has all my information. Any one visiting that page will know all abut me. It does concern me at times that it has so much information about me but I have supressed that concern so far.

I'm pretty happy with myspace because I have a fake name and fake email that I use for that one. Facebook won't let you do that, so that is why I disabled my page.

I feel pretty mortified with the highly personal nature of updates on facebook. I just can't imagine walking into a room full of people and making an announcement of the personal nature that some of the updates proclaim.

I have a facebook and myspace account. I separate them like this: Myspace is for friends that I dont care if they know about my stripping etc and I keep it Private... FB is for family and other friends and I dont put Stripping info on there (my family doesnt know and hopefully never will).

Facebook is like that episode of Seinfeld where all of George's friends started meeting each other and he couldn't handle it. As a (former) dancer it is especially risky and worrisome that a 'friend of a friend' could scroll though my pictures and recognize me. I wouldn't put my photo in public spaces like the mall and newspaper, so why am I putting all this info and pics online?

Good point. I think I should take my pictures off of LinkedIn.

People use it in a very much too-personal way. Besides it is a magnet for trojans and viruses. I will NOT sign on it, even to see sexy pictures. I'm way too private for that kind of stuff. Besides I don't have that much to say.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

Hmmm. I'm curious about this. I use myspace (personal page, no dancer stuff at all) and keep it private. I was thinking of getting a facebook, since that seems to be what everyone's moved onto. But now I'm wondering. Is it easier for people to harass you on FB, or is it pretty similar to Myspace?

IMO facebook is a little more private, I use MS for dancer personna (with a sep. email) and FB for real life.

I have both MySpace and Facebook. MySpace is under a fake name and the only people on it are online people. Facebook is strictly professional and I only add people I personally know. Both are set to private because I have stalkers and don't want them to find out more about me than they should. I should mention the only people who've found me on Facebook are mostly high school/college/graduate school classmates, relatives and various other people I know personally.

It would be no problem for you to make another email account and use whatever name you want on Facebook. I use my first and middle because I don't want my last name out there.
I've had to tone down my headlines since my "regular job" boss, two aunts, and snotty brother have added me on Facebook, and I will happily delete anyone who sends a sexual comment or message.
The only thing I like about FB is that its easier to keep up with what 's going on with my friends because of the "headline" thing. I hardly ever add an application...gets on my nerves.

Facebook could wind up being a problem for me eventually, especially as I myself have been venting about bad nights at work, etc. My old college friends now know I am SC DJ, and yeah it could easily get to family too. It's actually almost as much a problem for DJs as dancers what with people shunning you. Most of my old married friends' wives won't pass on messages I leave them, and don't want them to visit me or anything. Old female friends will often back right off from me too, like I am now tainted. It's weird.

But I suppose I really don't care all that much. My dad is the only close family I have left, and he's known for a while. The rest of them can bite me. OTOH I know it's not as easy for those with remaining closer family, kids, kid's friends and their families, etc. I can sure understand the reluctance there.

Oh and the old high school geeks trying to flirt, yuck.

I do have to wonder what my high school friends will think of the pole trick pictures. Being in Key West they will probably think I am gay or something--that's already been a factor with relatives. But the stuff I have written is hetero male SC DJ type stuff. Again though, I don't really care what they think, it's just funny.

FB is where I find out about events I may be interested in and I've also been able to hookup with family and classmates. I must admit it's addicting, particularly with YoVille.

I just use FB for friends and family. The myspace page has a few family members but is mostly dancers I exchange light "Hey! wazzup" type messages.

I have connected with some high school sorta knowns. Weird high school is something I would give up a kidney to not experience again.
