    Default Gym Routine ?

So it's about time to get my ass off my back..this sounds sad but I've never had a gym membership, I've always been into running and sports. I've let myself go a little so I took it upon myself to join Boston Sports Club..The place is gorgeous, I was so excited, but then I realized..I didn't know what the fuck I was doing. I spent two hours fucking around running on the treadmill and doing bikes. I'm doing classes, but I was wondering if you girls could help me out with suggestions or maybe post your routines to give me an idea ?

And also for weight loss measurements, do you measure by pound or inches ? I've been doing inches for a while because I always get crazy when it comes to numbers because I don't look my weight. Any thoughts ?

Pounds are (relatively) meaningless. Since muscle mass is denser than fat mass, as your body composition changes, you gain more muscle, which takes up less space per pound than fat does, so you can lose 2 inches on your waist but gain weight. If you're severely overweight, the weight number may come more into play initially, but even then it cannot be the only measurement you use. Another measurement is body fat %, but the home methods for this are not extremely accurate. But you can see trends with it.

Here is my routine (cut and pasted from an old blog entry)

Sunday: 60 minutes Spin Class/60 min Yoga

Monday: 60 min Spin class/30 minutes low-moderate intensity cardio at 75% Max Heart Rate on elliptical in the AM; 60 minutes weights with trainer/30 minutes walking on treadmill with 65% Max Heart Rate in the PM

Tuesday: 60 min spin class/30-45 min cardio at 65% MHR

Wednesday: 60 min weights with personal trainer/30 min cardi0 at 65% MHR

Thursday: One week rest, other week 60 mins cardio at 65-80% MHR

    Friday: 60 minutes 24Lift Class/30 min cardio at 65%

Saturday: 60 minutes cardio at 65-80% MHR

I try as much as I can to switch up my cardio tools: some days its the treadmill, other days the elliptical, bike, or step mill. I have a preference for the elliptical and hate the step-mill. Overall, no tool is better than another. You burn the same amount of calories on the bike with a heartrate of 175 BPM as you do on the treadmill with a heartrate of 175 BPM. It’s your HEARTRATE that matters, not the tool.

The importance of switching up the tools is to prevent over-use injuries. My good friend LOVES the step-mill, but her knees are KILLING her now. Repetitive motion, over time creates injuries: if she doesn’t start incorporating other activities, she’s going to do even more damage.

^^It's supposed to be pretty great for sculpting your body.

I'm more interested in stregthening my core though, so I do Iyengar. I've toned up still though.

Don't worry about weight worry about body fat; a cubic inch of muscle weighs more than a cubic inch of fat. Muscle will burn calories by its self as fat does not; muscle looks better. I'm talking lean lady muscles not budging steroid muscles.

    You want to do three things;
cardio vascular, resistance training and flexibility. This can be done in less than 3 hours a week if you get into a routine and don't socialize while working out. Start with stretching to warm up, then do resistance work on the weight machines. Start with the largest muscles (butt) and work your way down to the smallest (neck). You should use light weight and do about 20 repetitions to fatigue the muscle; do two or three sets. Then move on to aerobics, treadmill or stairs; get your heart rate up to 80% of maximum for 20 minutes then cool down for 10 minutes. You may want to stretch again wile you catch your breath. After your work out sit in the sauna to open up your pours, it will also keep you from being sore the next day.

Do not do weight training two days in a row as that will be counterproductive and no more than three times a week. You can do aerobics every day but it is not necessary. You can swim in the pool for variety but it will be hard to get your heart up to 80% of maximum. THE MOST IMPORTANAT THING IS TO DO IT THREE TIMES A WEEK.

I'm doing this Five Million Dollar Program by Wet Wolf and loving it! My goal is to lean out while holding onto my muscle.

    http://figureathlete.tmuscle.com/fre...dollar_program

All 3 full body weight workouts last about an hour and the 3 cardio interval sessions are about 15-20 minutes long so I'm not killing myself w/hours in the gym.

BSC is a great gym BTW! I used to go to NYSC. Definitely take advantage of those classes! I always liked the yoga ones.

If you just joined, perhaps they offer a free personal training session. This will help get you familiar with the equipment and proper form. If you're interested in some books with routines, I recommend Body Sculpting Bible for Women by Hugo Rivera and New Rules of Lifting for Women. Otherwise take a weight class at the gym.

Oh and if you're the athletic type, maybe you'll like these sprint workouts. They are great for blasting fat and building a perky booty...but not exactly a gym workout.

My question is, where on earth can I learn to do Ashtanga yoga? One of my local gyms offers their version of yoga but have never even HEARD of Ashtanga.

I don't have a routine, I'm not organized enough for that. But I will say that the ONE THING that got me into hitting the gym regularly and that built up my endurance to stay at the gym a long time was interval training. You can do it with any cardio, I think there was an example in . And this just got me pumped so fast about working out and now I can spend forever at the gym. Sometimes.

Fuck pounds, my weight always fluctuates and I have weighed more when I was skinnier. Inches do matter to me though, for modeling purposes. It's good for me to maintain a certain waist circumference to fit into some of the clothing brands I wear for shoots.

I was killing myself with cardio and not getting anywhere,I seemed to actually be getting softer and flabbier. So I decided to add a weight training regimen 3 days a week and whoah....big difference. I can see and feel it, my stomach and thigh region is harder then hell.

I learned that your metabolism is directly related to the total amount of lean muscle mass in your body. SO by doing cardio I was actually burning my lean muscle and lowering my metabolism.

Also, I cut out "white" carbs completely (white bread, potatoes, regular pasta, refined sugar) and lowered my total carb intake. We cook at home 6 nights a week (we have one "free day" every week) and out of those 6 meals only 2 involve whole-wheat carbohydrates (whole wheat pasta, brown rice, whole wheat bread) the rest all consist of a lean protein and vegetable with a salad.

I cannot even stress how important the food you put in your body is when trying to get in shape.

24Lift is a choreographed weight class. I prefer it over the 24Set class for strength training/toning.

The first half of the class is 3 1/2 minute intervals where you work chest, back, biceps, triceps, shoulders, and two leg exercises using barbells and plates. The second half of the class is 2 1/2 minute intervals where you do a different exercise for the same muscle groups using free hand weights.

Arrive a few minutes early and ask the instructor to help you select the appropriate weights.

For a first timer I tell them to have a heavy and a light barbell. Heavy for the legs: 20-30 lbs and a lighter one for everything else 15-20lbs. Depending on how big the class is, grab a heavy, medium and light set of free weights: 12lbs for legs, 8s and 5s for upper body.

Don't do so much cardio. Focus more on weight training to get curves in the right places.

I do about 60 min of cardio.

I warm-up by walking on the tread mill for 15 minutes at a slow (2.5-3) pace on an incline, then stretch.
Then I do 15- 20 minutes on the elliptical machine or bike.
Then weights, I do arms one day and legs the next,
Then I do the rest of my cardio and sometimes do the weights again. I use lighter weights (10 lbs for arms, 40- 60 lbs for legs) but do a lot of reps really quickly. An old trainer told me that this keeps the heart rate up and burns fat without adding too much bulk. I am very strong and have a very muscular build. I can easily do 100+ lbs on my leg presses.
I have been doing this with a very extreme iet and Tonalin and have seen a big improvement in my body.
I do abs at home (pilates and a "core" workout) every single day. I switch the routine up a lot to tire certian muscles.

I haven't been to the gym in a year but I have 2 german shepherd dogs who require lots of walking and that does for me. Literally 2x 1 hour walks every day= about 6 miles, at a decent pace, up hills and I could eat take out every night if I wanted to. Learning and practsing tricks and spins on the pole does for my toning.

Like people have said... stretching, weight lifting and cardio are the core components of your routine.

I work out 4-5x weekly. I stretch first and then hit the weights. I do lower body one day and upper body next. So one days I'll do full legs, butt, abs. The next day I'll do abs, full arms, and back. I learned a lot about proper weight lifting technique and different exercises for body parts through this website: . It's really good because it breaks down the exercises by different body parts and has a little demonstration (3D character I guess) doing it so you know it's right.

Cardio I switch up so I never get bored... sometimes I'll do a class, sometimes I'll run and other times I'll do the elliptical. I always stretch at the end of my routine as well.

Maybe you have some sort of thyroid or gastrointestinal problem? There was a period of two years where I was working out at moderate intensity about 4-5 days a week and eating well, but kept losing a lot of weight inexplicably. (I miss those days!) It turns out my hormones were all out-of-whack and I had digestive problems.

Please go to a doctor and get some tests done if it's unusual for your body to be like this. Also, make sure you're getting enough vitamins and calcium, since your body may not be absorbing all that you eat. And as a woman, having too low body fat can be very bad for your bones and put you at risk for osteoporosis later in life.

I hate the gym with a passion and have been lucky in the genetics department so I don't go at all, but I am going to start taking Muy Thai boxing for my workout! I get fit, it isn't boring, and I get to punch stuff.
