Default Question for those who sell shoes/clothing

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I'm throwing it in general. Move it if you need to.

I'm giving a lot of thought to customizing and selling shoes both inside my local clubs and online (likely through etsy). First I will need to buy shoes wholesale. I've looked at the customer FAQs on the websites for both Pleaser and Ellie. They say I need a "Sellers Permit or Tax I.D". This might be a dumb question, but are they the same thing? How difficult is it to obtain one? How long does it take? I'm sure these answers vary from state to state... but a general idea would be good. Thanks.

I think all you need to do is get a business license. What's required may very by state. Once you have your tax ID#, you should be good to go.

i run a small buisness similar to what you want to do. all you need to do is obtain a state tax ID no. for whatever state you live in, to prove that you're going to pay sales taxes to the state.

here in tx, it takes like 15m, you just walk into the comptrollers office and fill out a form. very simple.

Update: I filed for my sales and use tax ID online and should be receiving my ID# in business days.

    Another question:

First off, my online store will feature only custom "reworked" shoes, so don't worry about me competing with you directly, not that there isn't room for everyone.

Anyway, what shoe sizes do you find the most common/most purchased? I will be doing custom orders but I'd like to keep a variety of "ready to buy" shoes available. I'm thinking 6, 7, and 8 are the most common. Does that seem right?

I find whenever I try to buy 8's or 9's in dance shoes they are often the ones sold out. I'd say 7, 8 and 9 to be the most common.

me? oh goodness i don't sell shoes, i make clothing, actually. LOL.

but i DO work in a stripper-clothes store (electrique boutique) and the size we sell the most of are 7-8-9. we sell a TON of the pleaser kiss' in black and clear, and the ankle boots (the adore...something #'s) in black were gone the moment we put them out. also, pleaser has newly released a shoe with a gun shaped heel, super sexy. we put them out two days ago and girls have been trying them on like crazy.

if you're going to be selling in the club, i would reccomend keeping the standard clear/clear 8" available at all times, as well as a strappy silver shoe, and a strappy black. those are the shoes that always break and i always need a pair right then.

Your tax I.D. is your social security number. You don't even need a license.

I -think- you need to have a state AND federal license to run a small business. You'll probably need both when you file at the end of the year. If I remember correctly, one is free and the other is cheap. (like... $10, maybe?) Also, since you have a vagina, your state and/or the gov't may give you money if you can create a job for someone. You'll have to look into what's available for your area. Here, I can get money for all kinda of things because I'm in a rural area, I can open a business in an 'old building', I could create jobs, 'preserve the town', etc. Gov't and state both like to give women money, or worst case, give 'forgiving' loans. Something to check out. Also... I'm saying all this based on memory, so definitely look into everything.
