    Default Those of you who can do Russian Splits....

    Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I figured since it has something to do with physical fitness.....

    Those of you who can do this.........HOW did you train your body? What kind of stretches did you do? How long did it take you to get fully stretched out?

    I really want to learn how to do this, kind of a little personal goal for me....so can anyone give me some pointers?

    For those who were like me, and might not have heard the term "Russian Split" before, it's a jump split ...






    This seems like and ineresting option to help train...

    If you can't win. Make the fellow in front of you break the record.

    ^ yeah, the "frontways" way, I guess. Like the ice skater only NOT jumping in the air, just doing it on the floor.

    I think it's hot and really want to learn to do it. There is one girl who does it at my club and pops her booty while in the split, one ass cheek at a time and it looks cool.

    The best way to get to any kind of split, front or sideways, is the following:

    After cardio (so your body is warmed up), do some decent stretches, (reach down to the floor, get down on the floor and reach for your toes, then over each leg, etc), then the next part will seriously get you full splits in weeks.

    Slide down into a split, until the point where it's slightly uncomfortable. Hold that for 30 seconds, then slide down into your absolute maximum split. Hold that for 30 seconds. Push back up to that uncomfortable point again, hold for 30 seconds.

    Do that every other day, and you will see a HUGE improvement in 2 weeks, and will likely be in a full split in a month.

    I did this, and I went from being a completely unflexible foot off the floor, to do splits, then over-split, in 6 weeks. By over-splits, I mean I go into a split, then lift up a leg and put up on a pile of books, a chair, etc.

    also, you need to open up your hip socket and for me, this seems to be taking like, a flipping lifetime!...sit on floor and open legs into a wide v as far as you can, roll hips forward and contract the opposite muscle to the stretch, ie. your front thigh muscle...just keep at it.

    Stretch everyday and practice bring it into your routine. Everytime you do it you'll be able to go a little farther but it takes time, don't push your body past its limits.

    Wow.

    I could do that when I was a little girl but I don't seem to remember doing those splits past... elementary school?

    I can still do the other ones though. Scissor splits.

    So does your hip come in and out of socket?

    Sounds like it should make childbirth easier.

    well not actually dislocating your hip! lol! no it won't/shouldn't come out of your hip socket...unless you're a contortionist or something.



    I mean making the hip joint more flexible. You know, like some people find it difficult to sit down cross legged for example. it's not necessarily due to flexibility of the muscle so much as flexibility of the hip area - ie. it's not used to being in that certain position. YOu need to expand the range of movement in your hip in order to get into the russian splits.

    ...And yes, as a former rhythmic gymnast myself, i can add the persistence and commitment to do a mandatory stretch for good 20 minutes on a split every time after intense cardio will get you very far! Just don't take any brakes, hit for a stretch area directly while your muscles are still warm. Push yourself a little deeper every time.

    OOOH! I wanna learn how to put my leg up while standing like that too. I saw the Pussycat Dolls (not the musical group, the girls at Caesar's) do it in Vegas...some of those dancers must be trained pro's....
