Default How many of you consider yourself artists?

I've noticed that a lot of strippers, myself included, strip to finance or provide time for an artistic pursuit. I'm trying to get a handle on how many creative SWers are out there.

Do you consider yourself an artist? How does stripping allow you to do your artistic pursuits? And what are some of your goals for yourselves as artists?

so, umm, i voted before i read the whole post and realized it was just for dancers. if the results are really important to you then take one count out of the visual arts (im a graphic/production artist). sorry about that.

That's okay. I'm mostly curious because you hear a lot about the "I'm dancing to support my kids" or "I'm putting myself through college" strippers, but it seems like there's a large segment of "I'm doing this to finance my art" strippers out there, too.

i dance to pay for my tuition, i go to an art school.

also, all my stage tips go in a jar to finance trips to festivals and convnetions where i sell the clothing i've made.

so i guess i consider myself an artist.

definitely true for me....I checked the "actor" option although I'm involved in photography, writing, and other visual arts as well.

I'm a writer. I don't make enough to live comfortably on that income alone but I make an average of $2000 a month from writing web content. It's enough that I don't feel like I'm lying when I answer the question of "What do you do for a living?" by saying that I'm a writer.

Eventually I want to go rent a cabin for a few months and pound out the rest of my book with no distractions but I'm putting that off for a few more years until my son is older.

Yeah, you're definitely qualified to say, without qualms, that you're a writer.

How did you get started writing web content? That sounds like a pretty sweet gig.

I started by doing phone sex actually, lol. I was writing my own erotica and then just recording myself reading it and selling the mp3's. I did pretty well with that. It kind of inspired me to look for writing opportunities on the net. Then I started writing on sites like ehow, helium, squidoo, stuff like that kind of just for shits and giggles really. There are a couple of websites where you can search jobs and post your availability but sometimes people will flake out and not pay so that's a pain in the ass.

Right now I work mainly at demandstudios. It's easy work, and they pay on time every week. Some people complain that it's low paying but they pay $15 an article, and I can put out two or three in an hour so it's a good, solid gig for me especially considering I don't have to leave the house.

I was a freelance writer in print years ago and I'm sure anyone who has done it knows what kind of hell that can be. You get a lot of rejections and it starts to wear on you after awhile. The internet is much kinder and gentler than the print world and e-mail rejections don't phase me as much as an actual letter that politely says "You Suck." lol

haha. so true, especially when it's coming in your own SASE. Like, I'm glad I paid for the postage for you to reject me.

I just applied at demandstudios, btw. Thanks for the tip!

This has me very interested! I've been writing original stories that would be classified as "Chick Lit" for about a year now, but haven't had anything published. I was wondering about how one makes money with web content, but hadn't really gotten far enough along to do some real research on the topic.

I'm this close to launching my first serious blogging project, but am also well aware that the income possibilities from blogs are very low.

My husband writes for a couple of professional home construction journals, but those jobs are few and far between. His stuff is technical and designed for industry insiders. So no creativity, just information about niche construction sectors (specificly decks and outdoor structures).

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

My art is not for sale; it would reduce it to crass commercialism; my art is for the betterment of the human race; not personal gain.

P.S. If this is only for dancers it should not be posted in a forum that an impaired PL has access to.

I hope demand works out for you WD!

Paris, demand is all non fiction. You pick from available titles and many of them are how to's. It's probably a dumbed down version of what your husband does in all honesty, lol.

As for fiction on the web, I haven't really found a good outlet for it. There is a website called Constant Content though. I'm having a technical problem and I can't confirm my email with them so I haven't been able to check them out more. I don't know if you can list fiction there but if you can they take 35% of what you make and you can sell limited rights to your piece for one price over and over again or full rights for a much higher price just once.

I've resigned myself to non fiction for awhile. I think we're in the middle of a big change, the print world seems to be dying. Newspapers and magazines aren't doing very well, and as much as I want to believe that people would never give up actual books... who knows what might happen in the next couple of years.

You could consider turning your work into ebooks and then using a blog to promote them. I've heard good things about e-junkie when it comes to publishing ebooks. I'm no expert though, that's just my first thought on it. Check out the forums at Absolute Write, there are some people on there who really know their stuff.

I never did think of myself as artistic when I was younger, but it turns out I have some talents... atypical ones, but one area where they come out is when I'm writing software (which I've been doing hardcore for many years, but atypical problems that others didn't enjoy). There are other areas as well where when I let go I've been told I'm brilliant..... is it art? don't know... but it is creativity.

Since PLs have infiltrated this thread anyway, I do not see any harm in chiming in as well. Although my profession can hardly be classified as a profession of an artist but I have an artist that resides deep inside me. I consider myself a thinker. When given peace and tranquility, I produce some artistic thoughts.

I sing and do circus arts. I also just recently started to do a bit of film acting.

I especially love that no matter what kind of show I'm doing, I always get the "character actor" roles: the second-tier, quirky, strange, fluffy, eccentric, and/or comic-relief characters. What fun!

Anyway, I'm also in school, so I don't have my heart set on making a living from any of these things. If it happens, great! If not, whatever; I sing and act and fly around in the air simply because I love it.

There will be no hope for the world if we ever get to a point where people can't appreciate what a wonderful experience it is to read books. Actual print-and-paper books, not those stupid pain-in-the-butt electronic things. Cuddling up on the sofa with a blanket, cozy pajamas, a cup of tea and a good book is one of life's greatest little pleasures.
