    Default More obscure songs

Anyone here who dances not only to hip hop and rock, but to jazz or older music? I'm a big fan of Eartha Kitt, the Andrew Sisters, "Peel Me A Grape" (Diana Krall's version) etc and I really think I could do really good with these songs.

Think I could dance to these in a regular club?

Sadly, most clubs won't play this kind of stuff. In their defense, they are usually trying to keep the pace faster and upbeat and giving the crowd what they want (ie more popular stuff).

I personally love Eartha Kitt and Billie Holiday, that sort of sexy jazz--and especially Miles Davis (though most of his stuff is way out there and would never work in most clubs). Unfortunately, I really can't play that sort of thing on the nights I work (thursday, friday, saturday), except maybe at the beginning or the end of the night.

In my first few clubs I used to have certain special dancers I would play stuff like this for, and it would work if you immediately kicked back in with the faster music, etc. I would tell the guys why we were doing it and make a big deal out of it. But very few dancers could pull it off.

In my last two clubs there is no way it would work. Every time I play anything slower, even if it's because a dancer lied about a burned CD and told me it was fast when it wasn't, I get a bunch of them coming up whining about how 'you just played a slow song for HER, why not for me?!' And some of these women could never, ever pull it off, even if the owners and managers would let me.

My advice would be to ask for these kinds of songs at the beginning and/or the end of the night, and if one of your DJs is cooler than the other, ask them--not the jerk, lol.

Oh also, you might like this CD by DJ Mark Farina, San Fransisco Sessions. It's technically called 'acid jazz', but it's not drug oriented at all, really. Anyway it has a lot of 40's style vocals mixed in with jazzy techno, really good stuff, I think you will like it--especially the track by Markus Nikolai called 'Bushes'. I think it's about fooling in the bushes in the park, which is always a great idea.

I dance to blues like stevie ray vaughn on the slower nights. Depends on the club.

Country goes OK in some areas. Almost all music played in clubs involves a lot of singing or its recent substitute SHOUTING/SCREAMING!! (ugh, i'm outta there)

Shame that the old sexy standard "Fever" and the like are just not available in clubs. Blame it on the young rocker kids who do not appreciate real musical talent.

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

I dance to a wide variety of music, but I'm also flexible when the crowd isn't right for it. Of course, I work dayshift (by choice) so I can get away with a lot more. When I do work nights (which I try to avoid) I have to dance to much more popular (albeit still alternative) music. If you're willing to work dayshift, that kind of music can really work for you. Also, the longer you're at a club the more (typically) the DJ is willing to play you obscure music. Like Djoser said, you have to prove you can pull it off. It also doesn't hurt to tip well.

Thanks for your input, I guess it comes down to the atmosphere at the club on that particular night, if it's slow, then the DJ and the girls can just say "fuck it" and play whatever they want whereas on a busy night, money's talking.

    Bonus:

Isn't this a great song about about strippers? OLDSCHOOL!

Another group you might want to check out if you're going the acid jazz route is "Liquid Soul." They're a local Chicago band, but I believe they travel throughout the states. I've seen them live a few times and they're great. They even won a grammy a few years back.

some places not all but some let you play your own songs during private rooms that's where I would would try and play it. some places have a separate play list for the rooms ask the dj if you can add them on others let you bring in personal players to plug into the speakers all ready in the rooms...or if you can set up your own stage sets start off with slower and work way up to a faster more popular song, or visa versa. it all depends on the club and the type of customers it has.
