Default Knee making cracking and popping noises

LOL one time I hit my knee really hard getting out of a booth at a restraunt. This was when I was about 17 or so, but nevertheless since then It has made this strange cracking sound when I bend it certain ways. I am afraid this can only get worse when I get back to dancing, it doesn't hurt it just pops and cracks when I am crawling and practicing my moves. I can crawl around with no pain, but when I get up off the floor it cracks. I guess I must limit my crawling and bending, but I was thinking of the commercials you see on tv for joint releif. Any of you experience knee problems like this, and how do you work with the problem? Wearing knee pads is just not an option here! TY

Haha I get the same thing, anytime i go on my knees it's an awkward crack..or pop..Shark cartillage is what my brother takes. It sounds a little nasty but it's just a pill and he says he's stopped cracking.

I'm no doctor, but my first thought was that you dislodged a little piece of cartilege. There's nowhere for it to go now, so it is just in your joint capsule crackling away when it rubs against another part of your joint. As far as whether it's causing any harm, i have no idea. I hope not! The fact that you are having no pain is a good sign. Good luck with it!

Just go to the doctor and have it checked, and in the mean time avoid floorwork and bending.

lmao my personal trainer calls me Rice Crispies because my shoulders and my knees snap crackle pop and creak when I work out. When I dance, its embarrassing but harmless. I just limit floorwork (I still do it, but I move very slowly and pose more than I move) and bending. I've never really had any guy mention it, and I don't believe it hurt my money because I was in the top percent of the $$ makers at my club.

My doc said it's loose cartiledge floating around. I take glucosamine and chondroiton (spelling) and it's helped, but I'm still Rice Crispies.

I read somewhere that some of the cracking/popping noises are caused by air moving around in your joints. Don't know, though; could be total bullshit.

Go to a Dr NOW! I started out with a simple crackle & pop with no pain and let it go because there was no pain. Fast forward about 4 years and now there's pain. It's not excruciating or anything, but it certainly makes some days incredibly uncomfortable ... especially at work. My doc says x-rays have revealed some floating cartilage that would require surgery to correct. I don't have the time and/or money for knee surgery so I bite my lip and get through it. I'm lucky and am good friends with the DJ (not to mention I tip well) so he'll skip my stage rotation on bad days and the bartenders will give me bags of ice if I need to take a few minutes down time. I used to take them off, but the economy is forcing me to work sometimes whether I like it or not. If you can address it early then I wholeheartedly recommend it!!!!

Ty for the advice but there is no way i could afford to go to a doc now, unfortunately. I am going to start taking supplements, I know it will only get worse with age, but unfortunately cant do shit now and a dr would probably recommend surgery if it is floating cartilege. Ty for your concern but surgery/dr's visits not an option now.

I completely understand. I didn't go to the doc early because I couldn't afford it either and, with the way things are now, I'm a firm believer in self-medicating whenever possible. I certainly recommend having it checked out when it's more financially feasible for you. In the meantime, just try to be conscious of the problem and control your bending, kneeling & crawling and try not to hyperextend. Take supplements if you feel they help. I've tried the glucosamin & chondroitin and it didn't seem to do much for me, but I've known others who swear by it. I also suggest wrapping your knee when not at work. It's not going to fix anything, but it will hold your knees in a more firm position when you don't need them as much which should help minimize any damage being done in the meantime.

Before I suggest this I must say that I think you should go to the doctor as soon as you can.
My suggestion is to take a supplement called, "Triple Flex," and, "Flex-a-min."
When I was a cheerleader in college I did a toe touch during a game and when I landed I didn't land correctly and I hurt my knee so badly. I started elevating and icing my knee 3 times a day for a half hour and I took these supplements and by the next game my knee was fine.
    I hope this helps.

I was a competitive distance runner for a long time, so my joints are SHOT.
Glucosamine can be awesome, but it doesn't always make the biggest difference, it tends to get mixed reviews. Changing shoes is a GREAT idea, icing after work is really really important too, it will help heal what damage has been done during your shift. If possible also using a heat pad before work can have good benefits, it stimulates blood flow, will increase circulation, and loosen up your joints so you don't start your shift with tight joints.
Try to go to a doctor, the cartilage can also start to get thinner, up to the point where you will need surgery.
When we're on our feet as often as we are we really need to focus on these issues, knee issues can easily lead you to overcompensate with other parts of your body which can lead to hip and back problems.
(As a reference I used to work for a running store that worked closely with podiatrists to help solve problems like this, hope this helps!)

That sounds like patella femoral syndrome. It can result from trauma- had it myself!

Buy a knee brace. When you are at home, strap 5lb weights to your ankles and do leg lifts laying on your back every day for about 15 minutes. This will strengthen your quads and help keep your knee in alignment. My physical therapist had me to that. Also, stationary bicycle. Start out with small increments, like 5 mins and work up.

Do these exercises while wearing the knee brace. I would also take naproxen sodium (name brand Aleve, but the no one just says NS) because it is an antiinflammatory as opposed to just an analgesic.

DO NOT KNEEL ON A HARD FLOOR. This will further upset the joint it won't get better. Give it a month to see improvement before you attempt kneeling.

I also agree with glucosamine supplements, and eat foods that are good sources of silica.

    Hope that helps!!

I had a knee accident playing soccer and it bothered me when I started dancing.

However, a customer who is an 18 year NHL veteran told me about this product:

http://www.nakaherbs.com/pdf/nutri_flex_liquid.pdf when I spoke of my knees...

I've been using it ever since and don't notice any pain anymore whatsoever.

I agree with Mediocrity: strengthen those quads. My doc told me this when I got back into dancing. It has helped tremendously. I take glycosamine also. It doesn't hurt to take it. And calcium. But the quad thing is best. Not only is it helpful but it makes your legs look sexy and toned.

Wow, my friends always teased me because my hips and knees crack often (my shoulders only do it when I do pushups). I never really thought about it. I always just assumed it was related to the fact that I had been diagnosed with juvenille arthritis at 14. I always just ignored the noise, just figured it was normal.

This glucosamine stuff isnt something ive ever heard of. Definitely worth looking into by the sounds of it. Thanks to those who suggested it as well as cyberstripper for starting the thread. I cant get over how useful this site has been.
