I don't do the tanning thing like most of the girls do here, and I am pale. A customer asked me if I ever go out in the sun and I made up some lie. Do you think I'd look better and make more money tan? Do you tan?

I don't tan. I refuse to destroy my skin like that. I have black black hair though and I play up my pale skin. So no, it doesn't effect my money.

You could try spray tanning. But honestly, just bc one customer said something doesn't necessarily mean you should change your whole look unless you really do feel it isn't working for you.

I tan moderately, and I've seen a definite increase in tips since I got darker. But I'm blonde and very, very fair normally, so I actually do look better with a tan.

There's a girl at my job who is pale, pale white, with black hair, and she does the whole Goth/ rocker chick thing. She banks because she stands out so well.

So it goes both ways. Sometimes it pays, sometimes it doesn't.

I prefer to have color on me. I normally have dark brown or golden blonde hair, and i find that having some color makes me look healthy, and also thinner. When I end up being very tan, I find people ask if I lost weight!

I live 5 miles away from the ocean in California. Here, the UV rays are EXTREMELY high, and you can get a sunburn just from walking on a cloudy day. I do NOT sit out to get tan, and I rarely go tanning (although i do like it, not gonna lie). I preach and preach about Jergens self tanner lotion, and there's a reason.... It gives me a nice honey color, without sun damage. It's also a great lotion in general.

I think that if some girls are TOO pale, it makes them look sickly. Too dark, they look like leather. You just have to find a medium that YOU are happy with.

I don't go to tanning beds, and I wear sunscreen every day, but I still get have some color on me from going outside and hiking, walking my dogs, etc. I make sure to expose my skin but I'm not out there baking. A more natural look like that does well for me. It's my happy medium.

LOL I never post I mostly just read but how do you do that?? You walk the dogs naked? I have pale freckley skin so I generally sunblock when I'm outside gardening or lifeguarding the toddler pool but I still get a total farmer burn (Oh no, not a tan, I am very very delicate I guess my question is how do you blend in the tan/burn/whatever lines?

As far as the money, I self tan when I can, and get a marginally warmer skin tone...which pretty much always disappears under light. IDK, it doesn't seem to matter.

I've only been tanning recently and it's been so dead these last few weeks I can't really tell if it's helping me money wise.

However I think it's helped, I make a lot more on stage. I can also wear more colors because I don't fade so easily.

I use a self-tanner on the tan lines to minimize it. I wear tops with out wide straps or my bikini or sports bra sometimes. Shorts or skirts. But yeah, self-tanner is my BFF.

Like people said, sometimes the whole paleness goes along w/your whole look. Also, just one customer telling you that doesn't mean you should do it - it's just his preference. Some guys like fat girls, but that doesn't mean that you should gain 50 lbs.

I, personally, feel more comfortable when I'm tan. I feel like I look more fit and my skin is more even. I only fake bake, though, bc I'm paranoid about skin cancer.

It might depend on what clients that you cater to, as well.

All in all, I've seen tan girls, medium girls, and pale as hell girls do well...it really depends more on the rest of the package, including personality and hustle.

Pale girl here! I've never failed to be the palest girl anywhere i've ever worked, but i stand out because of it. Yeah i get dopey ass comments like "do you ever get any sun?", "ghost!", "uh, ever hear of spray tan?" but it has never affected my money. I have no interest in messing up my skin by trying to tan, i'd only turn red if i tried, and fake tanners make me look dirty (not dirty as in naughty girl, but dirty as in rolled in dirt). If a tan makes you feel more confident than do it, confidence in yourself and your appearance is the most important thing.

A bronze, even tan hides skin flaws and even camouflages mild cellulite and spider veins, which will help you feel more confident wearing sleeveless tops and shorter skirts. In short, tan fat looks better than pasty white fat. But don’t look to the sun’s harmful UV rays for a tan – buy a bottle of self-tanner and get to work on your own homemade glow. My skin easily tans, first I apply a layer of sunscreen & then a bottle of Hawaiian Tropic Dark Tanning Oil, Original Moisturizing 15-20 minutes on each side. I feel so pretty afterwards, plus a gold bronzer= Fabulous!

I'm so pale I glow green under blacklight.

    I'm not kidding.

It's fake bake all the way for me. My family has a history of skin cancer, both parents have had stuff removed. So I stay away from the naughty uv rays.

I do make more money when I'm darker though. Not too much, cause I'm a redhead and a tan redhead looks like a barbeque potato chip, but enough so that I don't blind the custys in the front row. I'm not sure if it's psychological, or cause I'm not making the light reflect into their eyes in our dark naughty environment.

I always made much more money tan. Fwiw I'm blonde haired, blue eyed and extremely fair(I'm talking Nicole Kidman pale). I know some girls rock the pale look, but it never worked for me. Like many others in this thread, mine is always a fake tan though. I'm 33 and can't afford the sun damage.

I fake bake with Jergens and a generic CVS spray for my back and hard to get places.

Every 2 to 3 weeks I splurge on a spray tan from Chocolate Sun salon in Santa Monica. This stuff leaves your skin silky and flawless and it can last (if you don't dip into chlorine or exfoliate) for up to 9 days. It's not cheap but so worth it and they haven't raised their prices since 07.

I do live by the beach and I'll go running in a bikini top. I had SPF 50 on the other day and I still got color. I'm half Mexican but a very fair one, so the sun just seems to find me.

In my opinion nobody looks bad with a tan..That doesn't mean turn yourself orange. I actually think pale is sexy, light eyes are gorgeous. However you have to find that space where you find what looks work for you and you're happy with it. Some men like blondes. Others prefer brunettes. The same way some men prefer pale and others prefer tans.
If you want to try fake tans, the Jergen's foaming works great for drugstore brands. If you're looking to invest in a more up-scale brand, St. Tropez has a great reputation and product. If you'd rather do the tanning beds, you don't have to fry yourself. You can always build a base and then create a nice glow, but don't forget to get checked by your dermatologist at least once a year and be aware of your body.

IMO a tan makes a body/face look healthier. A great thing about a tan is that it makes the body appear thinner. Also, the bright outfits look awesome on a nicely tanned body, makes you stick out even more. And like a previous poster, it can hide cellulite & all that shit.

You don't have to ruin your skin with those awful tanning beds, just get a spray tan...You can tell the sprayer how light or dark you want to be...it doesn't take long & boom, your tan for a week or two. Very easy.

    Good Luck.
    XoXo

I would say it depends on the region. In South Fla, or LA or Vegas or TX, you might need a tan, in the midwest not so much. Anyone agree?

Agree on the South FL! hehe

I always think I look better tan.. but it has to be your preference.. if you like you, then THEY will like you.. does that make sense? A little redundant here but its all about confidence

Whatever makes you feel more confident makes a bigger difference than what makes you look better to other people. I admire pale skin on other people much more than I admire a tan, and real tanning greatly degrades the texture and vibrance of a person's skin. However, most people, myself included, feel more confident with a tan.

It varies a lot depending on what region you're in. New Yorkers keep their skin tones natural, as do San Franciscans. In fact, anywhere hip and urban stays pretty natural and laugh at the idea of a fake tan. Other places almost have an expectation for tan skin. Pale skin can be gorgeous or exotic, but if you are surrounded by much darker-complected girls you will stand out- it can work for you or against you.

So if you do tan, don't ask the sun or a sunbed for any help. Instead, invest in a great airbrush tan every couple of weeks and maintain it with a gradual tanner like Jergins. It may seem like a pain in the ass, but a real tan will age the hell out of you no matter how much you rationalize it ("I'm greek on my dad's side" "I only do it a little bit" etc, etc,) because it WILL come back to bite you in the ass.

Also, you could think about changing your hair color or make up or something before you commit to changing yor skin tone. Orrrr you could use bronzers that wash off like the Lorac one.

And also, a LOT of guys really dig virginal, pale skin. However, are they going to strip clubs?
