Default I'm not flexible... At all

Ok. Here's the deal. I love dancing and I seem to be ok at it... But i'm not flexible at all. I play to my assets and never let it stop me dancing, I know my limits - but I WANT TO BE FlEXIBLE!

I used to be quite a good athelete, and even then I could never touch my toes. I can't lie on the floor and stick one leg directly up, I'm that inflexible.

I know the deal of warming up and stretching... but... can you girls offer me any stripper tips for getting there? I'm about 1/2 foot away from my toes when I'm standing now and it feels like the closest I'm ever going to get!

Um I am still able to do all the splits because I stretch EVERY Single time I work out. Since I have always been flexible I guess it's hard for me to give advice but I would recommend doing some Yoga to "open up" your joints and try to do strecthes that a ballet dancer would do. I'm sure you can find some online. Of course they'll be hard at first but hold them for at least a minute each and try to stretch a little further each day

just keep doing it. Hold the stretch to point of uncomfortable-ness (not pain) and stay there for minute or more, then stretch a little bit more, hold it for another minute or so. You need to stretch AT LEAST once a day.

Btw, for what its worth, it took me two years to be able to do a split...patience. It will come if you keep up with it. My problem was I didnt keep up with it. Once I actually buckled down and stretched two-three times a day, I got them.

    Foam rollers help too!

I have the same problem! PampillonLurv is sooo right, you really have to be patient and consistent.

I like Hot Yoga, it makes me feel like I actually am flexible.

I am also quite stiff... I never was all that flexible to begin with tho and i took dance for 11 years.. I just try to stretch every day and do yoga once or twice a week.
I also cannot lay down and have one leg up straight in the air. I used to joke and say its cause my legs are too long...

I agree with consistency and holding the stretches being key. I was always super flexible, but quit stretching a while back and just recently discovered I've stiffened up quiet a bit. I started stretching twice a day when I noticed a couple of weeks ago and have already seen a lot of improvement. I was a foot off the ground on my split, now I'm almost there again. Yay!!

    I agree with K Sweet:

Hot yoga is awesome! The hot yoga I have done is called Bikram yoga. The heat really allows your muscles to stretch farther than they would normally; like heating metal before you try to re-shape it Warning, though, it's very intense and not for all body types. Fast results though.

My biggest problem was even if I stretched as far as I could go, I just couldn't reach far enough to cause discomfort, and therefore never improved.

The best tip I ever learned was to GENTLY stretch using weights. Do your normal stretches first, then pick a relatively heavy weight in each hand (I used 10 pounds in each hand). Then do your stretches while holding the weights.

For instance, when I would reach down to touch my toes, the extra weight pulled me a bit further than I could reach normally, so I improved dratically in a fairly short period of time.

Stretch after you work-out and like Princess Jas said “hold it for a minute & consistency”. I can only do the Left Leg Front Split & Right Leg Front Split. Do a few sets of kicks each day. Try to kick as high as you can with toes pointed. Sit in the floor and do butterflies. Try to put feet as close to groin area as possible and try bend knees closer to floor. Put legs out in front of you and stretch forward.try to do splits everyday and try to stay in the position as long as possible. Try to go lower every day.

Yoga baby - I've been doing it for like two weeks and my posture is already improved. I considered myself pretty flexible to begin with but even just doing two classes per week has already made a huge improvement - the benefits of yoga are craazy. I'm obsessed.

And besides yoga, try cheer bands. You can order them online, cheerleaders use them to increase flexibility and strength.

wow i thought i was the only inflexible person here. I cant even point my toes all the way and i took ballet for 7yrs and cheerleading for 5yrs. I just thought me becoming flexible would be impossible, I will definitely start stretching religiously.
