Wow that is really fucking sick and scary! You would think a suburban gym is a "safe place"

So introverted he could not accept that the problem was in himself. He didn't go out to meet someone and expected someone would come and meet him. Then again I am glad the bastard offed himself and saved us the expense of a Trial by Jury for which he would have been found insane.

It is. You took a much greater risk of dying driving to the gym actually. Having said that, there's no place that's 100% safe, not church, not the gym, no place. What such events do is shatter our perception of safety - remind us no place is 100% safe - and that's never a good feeling.

One can view it as (1) statistically rare - even though the media wants you think think it's common - and not worry about it or (2) no place is truly safe from such nuts and thus it's best to be armed/prepared no matter where you are

Both have there potential pros and cons.

Regarding the above, For those who liked to be "armed" with the data, Dr. Kleck, one the most respected researchers on the topic of defensive gun use, gives a good interview this month here:

    http://www.rinr.fsu.edu/issues/2009winter/cover01_a.asp

To those who may worry he's biased, etc:

"I'm a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International USA, and I'm a lifelong Democrat," he says, pausing briefly in this recitation. "I'm not now and have never been a member of the National Rifle Association, Handgun Control, Inc., and I've never received a penny in funding for research from any such organization."

    To his creds:

"I'm boringly scholarly, having studied this issue for nearly 30 years." The result of this research is impressive by any standards: three books, 50 published articles in journals and in newspapers such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, 10 book chapters, and 40 presented papers. Kleck has published more articles on the defensive use of guns than anyone else on the planet.

If you have not read his books or papers, this interview sums up nicely his findings of his research and his opinions, etc. which address some of my comments above.

Moffatt said investigators are trying to determine whether anyone saw it online before the rampage."If anyone knew of it, they would have a moral and ethical obligation and legal obligation to bring it forward," the police superintendent said.

Being a very frequent blog/ forum reader, it is very difficult to know when someone is serious and when someone is just being creative with fiction. I think that statement is dumb. I've read some horror style blogs, but they were meant as fictions, and the writier lol'd when I suggested getting help.

^^One thing about guns that stands out to me. In areas where nearly everyone is armed this sorta thing seems to be much more rare. I grew up in such an area and can only think of one such incident and the guy was on drugs. That incident was stopped before any loss of life occured. Two men who were also armed, never fired a shot but disarmed the gunman and well, beat the piss out of him and restrained him until the cops arrived. You also never hear of home invasions in this area....why? because EVERYONE owns a gun and will shoot your dumb-ass if you break in their home.

Oh, btw, I do not own a gun although I know how to handle and use one and am as liberal as they come

The published data supports that assertion. I won't add anything to that as it's not a pro/anti gun thread (read interview linked above if interested in the topic...), but a "RIP to the victims and the shooter was a POS for a human being" thread...
