Default To all you ladies who understand the US economy so well...

How did you learn about all of it? I admit I dont understand the economy very well, and it seems like you girls do. I honestly am not sure where to start to learn. Did you girls take classes at some point or did you just read up until you became experts? If you just read up, can you recommend anything?

I wish the US schools would teach (mandatory) basic economics classes in high school. I feel like one of the 4 yrs of health class where I re-learned that marijuana would kill me and condoms were important for sex could have been put to better use in briefing me about the economy. And i think perhaps if more americans understood the economy the recession wouldnt have happened as much, because it is my understanding that a large part of the recession is due to Americans making really dumb descisions as far as loans etc. go.

So if you girls can point me in the right direction that would be fantastic. I'm not a dumbass; I am still young and my field is not in the business field so I have not really put forth effort into understanding this stuff. I want to learn about it now, but it would be much easier for me if i knew where to start. I sometimes read through things like the article clips posted on here, but I dont feel like i get as much out of it as I would if i had a better general knowledge of the situation.

    Thanks for any help!
The best thing i have heard in a strip club to date:
customer: we should get married right now! we should get a shotgun marriage!
me: uhh... i think you are misunderstanding what a shotgun marriage means. A shotgun marriage means you knock me up and my daddy shows up at your door with a gun and forces you to marry me and raise the baby. You mean elope.
customer: hmm... nah actually i will take the shotgun marriage. At least then we would be having sex.

Well I have taken Macroecomics (large scale supply and demand) and am regestered for Micro and also International Monetary Economics next semester, so I will be a lot better than.

Most of my info comes from reading or watching cable news or NPR. I'm def. not an expert but I know a lot more than most single people in their late twenties.

With regard to the recession, even the "experts" don't know what caused it or how to get out of it. Bernakie included (he's head of the Fed. Reserve) The "Top Cop" of the economy if you will. They are looking to the recession in Japan (and other Asain countries) as a model but really don't have any exit strategy. As far as the cause, I wouldn't say that it was bad decisions and ignorance as much as greed that caused the sub-prime and balloon mortgage shit-show. People looking to make a quick buck were approving folks for mortgages that had no business borrowing that kind of money. Also places like Fla and CA and the like, people were trying to "flip" houses but wanted $400k for houses that were worth $200 so things got ugly quickly which is why where I live and where others do also entire neighborhoods are in foreclosure or have for sale signs in front.

Other than that, I'll let other people give you advice because like I said, I'm still learning too.

I spent lots of time in Manhattan VIP rooms listening to inebriated bankers, brokers, CEO's, attorneys, politicians etc. discuss matters amongst themselves which they thought the big titted blonde on their lap had insufficient brainpower to understand !

As to an explanation as to why the US school systems do not teach meaningful economics until the collegiate level, the 'tin foil hat' crowd would tell you that this is no 'oversight', but a deliberate choice made by those who ultimately 'control' the curriculum i.e. the NEA, the US Dept of Education etc.

College. I have a B.Sc. in accounting and an M.B.A. , is where I learned the tools to understand the economy. I started stripping when I was 18 and stripped my way through college. Along the way, I took the tools I learned in college and applied them to my business of stripping. From that very small business, I gained a lot of first hand experience. By the time I graduated from college, I had a pretty good understanding of microeconomics both from the academic side and the practical side. (The two rarely meet in college.)

In my post stripping life, I have had the good fortune to work in the executive office of a huge southeastern electric utility where I saw what the top people were doing. I left there for a VC that has put me in three different companies in addition to the VC to work over the last five years. Along the way I picked up an MBA from an over-rated, over-indulged and over-priced private school. The MBA is utterly and totally worthless, except in the VC world where everyone expects people at the director level to have one. I have one, so I'm one of the "boys" even if my plumbing doesn't dangle.

Bottom line, I listen a lot more than I talk. But, I'm never fearful of saying my piece. And, when necessary, I give orders and expect them to be obeyed. One of my subordinates said of me, her bite is far worse then her bark.

Get the Wall Street Journal and read. Read Adam Smith's "THE WEALTH OF NATIONS". Read Milton Friedman's "CAPITALISM AND FREEDOM" and "FREE TO CHOOSE". Read the Economist. Watch CNBC and/or Fox Business News.

School for sure, I've taken economics (micro and macro) and political economics.

Smith and Keynes are good places to start, but I find them useful to balance with Marx even though its soooo dense.

    Melonie, you are so awesome.

In my experience men often overlooked my ideas or opinions because I'm female, but if you hang around them enough I find that its mostly a contest to see who uses the biggest words, not who makes sense.

Marx has NOTHING to contribute to understanding economics. He was WRONG about so many things and Communism is so discredited in actual practice, that the only reason to read him is to know what NOT to think.

    men and their size issues...

I'm an Economics student going into her 3rd year at York University in Toronto. My interest is more along the lines of business structures and systems rather than macroeconomics and global trade concerns and policies.

Just read all the conservative economic and political opinion stuff you can find and you'll be able to talk with them also. Unless it makes you too cynical, pessimistic, and sad.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

Quite the contrary. The real doom and gloomers have been guys like Galbraith, Krugman, Reich and Stiglitz. Conservatives like Friedman, Hayek, Greenspan and Kudlow tend to be much more positive and optimistic.

^^ Maybe. Just don't read too much on this forum.

My parents seemed to think I was lazy and would always tell me "You don't understand the value of a dollar!"

So I took it upon myself to understand money. Turns out I really, really like economics. Most people find it boring, but I tend to think in terms of everything having a dollar value, and how to observe where the money is and isn't to trend spot.

I recommend reading up on personal finance, first. Most people find their personal financial situation dismal, and if you can figure out how to better your financial situation through the use of money, this will spark your interest in the subject on a broader scale.

You may also try looking into what a bank does and how they operate. Banking is one of those businesses that everyone uses, but very few people really understand what it is a bank does to make money. Try reading-- "Money: What it is and how it works" to gain a better understanding of the flow of money in and out of banks and governments.

You may want to take a look at historical books on the building of the Untied States, and how/ why we became a superpower. An easy book to read on this subject is "Empire of Wealth: Epic History of American Economic Power".

Now I'm majoring in economics in college. I figured that since I would study the subject for pleasure, I might as well make it an official education. I'm currently reading "Who's Your City?" about the urbanization of humans and how your personal economic future is tied to location. There are some pretty decent observations in that book about future trends, pointing out that we may be moving to a more connected world, but location is still of prime importance when it comes to personal achievement.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!
