    Thumbs up Another Apartment question:..

How long should one work (as a stripper) before getting an apartment? My girlfriend just started working and she's thinking about getting her own place. She's been working for a month now and making good money ($400 average a night. Should she go for it...? I just started this year myself..a lot of yall would know better than i would..any advice would be great.

Should wait until you can have a few months EXTRA rent already paid stored in your savings account in addition to first month's rent/security deposit.
    JUST IN CASE. Ya know?
Like if something were to happen like she breaks her arm and can't work (or some equally ridiculous situation that causes loss of income)... she'll have that extra money to cusion the transition before she starts getting paid there.

Starting a savings is always a good idea - esp. while you're making money. I'd be sure to have a good amount set aside specifically for rent (before actually renting the place & while actually living there) because it's SO easy to get caught up in the whole "I can spend it now + easily make it up tomorrow" mentality that can result in unnecessary stress down the road.

I've paid 6 mo. - 1 yr in advance (before buying a place of my own) so that I could focus on other things like saving, school & travel.

All that's left is finding the perfect apartment - good location, reputable management company, quiet neighbors, amenities, security, view, convenient to shopping, work, etc. But don't rush to sign any contracts without thoroughly reading, understanding & being able to commit to them!

Consider things like, "Can I still afford this place if I can't work/stop making money?" + "If I break my lease, do I still have to pay for the months remaining?"

How badly does she need to move?

If she doesn't have a place to live, she should go for it.

If she has a place to live, save up a bit.

As a landlord, I require 2 months extra security (rent) from dancers and other cant-track-income people. You still pay every month, but the 2 months give me the chance to get paid if you hit a slow period (and not be an ass) or if I have to evict you I lose less.

    Show me a W2 or steady income...and we're good.

I would suggest she save up three months rent just in case something happens and she cannot work (broken leg, bad rash, really really sick). It happened to me-I couldn't work for a month and had to draw from my savings stash to pay for rent that month. Weird things happen unexpectedly.

If you're in NC (and near a summer destination like the outer banks) I would keep in mind that this is your busiest season. The money may not be so good come january and december, so make sure to get a place you (or she) can afford when she's making $200 a night!

    1. Stripper money fluctuates hugely. Don't make the mistake of thinking it will always be like this. Your friend may be enjoying "new girl money" right now....tell her to save it!

    2. It's not a good idea to jump into a lease the minute you get a decent paying job. Better to save some money first. Have a cash cushion in case of emergency. Shit happpens - plan for it.

    3. It sounds like both you and your friend are extremely young. Is she living with parents? I would say as long as she has a safe warm place to live she should take the opportunity to save as much money as possible before diving into financial commitments. Taking on those bills can wait.

    4. When she does decide to get her own place, she needs to have several months experience under her belt at least, so she will have a better idea what her REAL average earnings will be. 1 month is simply not long enough to know. Trust me, she doesn't want to make the mistake of leasing a $1000/month apartment, utility bills, cable/internet, phone, car, groceries, unexpected expenses (which ALWAYS manage to appear) unless she's positive her earnings will cover it all without stressing every month when rent is due...

Woow Thanks yall. She dosen't have a place to live. I've given her my bed and have been sleeping on my living room couch for three weeks now just so she can feel comfortable while working and save money for her own place. I was hoping she could get a place by next month. Guess not? ..
