Default Sulfate/Silicone free skincare recommendations wanted pls help

I have had a shampoo less and silicone free haircare routine for mos and not using silicones in my hair, and I have noticed less breakouts along my hair cheeks and back, however I still get a few, and my hair has changed for the better!

I know for a fact using sulfates and silicones in your skincare routine are just as bad as using them in your haircare routine.

I am currently transitioning into using homemade remedies for my facial wash/back wash that is acne prone. I wash my face and back with baking soda and apple cider vinegar and it has helped immensely, and a few other homemade masks etc, but I have stopped using store bought products that contain sulfates for washing. I am also curious about oil washing, but havent tried it yet.

Now for moisturizing: This has been a problem. I am currently using an oil of olay moisturizer with spf 15. It has silicones in it, but I haven't found a facial MOISTURIZER that doesn't contain silicones SO I haven't stopped using it!

I need a recommendation for a moisturizer that is silicone free/wax free, that is under $20, and has spf 15 if possible, and home made cleanser tips are always welcome! I have had a very hard time finding a moisturizer with spf that has no silicones, and spf. AND OR a Moisture with no silicones and some kind of spf protectant I can use on my face as well. Any recommendations appreciated.

ALSO does washing with BAKING SODA/apple cider vinegar rinses break down silicones? If not I have to stop using the oil of olay immediately!!!

For body, what lotion can I use that does not contain silicones to moisturize. I have heard great things about oils!

Trying to have a more green routine, can you tell? LOL!

hmmmm.... a cheap fave moisturizer of mine is the Ponds Dry Skin Cream, it is comparable to the Olay one. I just read the ingredients, and I don't see any silicones. I agree with you, I hate them too! I really hate that Smashbox Photo Finish makeup primer, it's like straight silicones on your face, nasty! I feel like it suffocates my skin and breaks it out. I get the same feeling from the Olay Regenerist Serum, the feeling of that stuff on my face is the same feeling I get from nails on a chalkboard, not to mention it makes my skin break out!

As far as the SPF, I always go 30 or higher. That's what I've always been told to do by my dermatologist/esthetician. I wear the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, it has built in SPF. It also doubles as my daytime makeup. Also, mineral makeup has a natural SPF. It is way hard to find a good high SPF face lotion. I have tried the Coppertone Faces one with antioxidants (its kind of greasy), the Eucerin Everyday Protection (turned my face white) and Neutrogena Age Shield Face (thick and greasy). Almost all of these have parabens or sulfates.

You may want to just invest in something like Skin Ceuticals moisturizers with UV protection, or some good topical antioxidants will help sun damage too. I use pure L Ascorbic acid (vitamin C powder) mixed with whatever face lotion.

    Hey there

It is not really that your shampoo will kill you slowly like smoking LOL, more or less it is bad for the environment as water does not naturally break silicones down. For me a personal preference.

I stopped using sulfate based shampoos and silicone based conditioners and I have noticed a huge improvement in my hair, for various reasons. The method is known as going shampooless, and since you are not using shampoo to break down silicones, you must get silicone free conditioners when you use this method. Going shampooless doesnt mean not washing your hair, you just do not use shampoo, only conditioners, or you use sulfate free/silicone free products. If u'd like more info google "going shampooless" It is great for anyone who has dry damaged or processed hair.

As far as skincare is concerned, I am still going on a quest to find what is best for me, but I am seeking more natural alternatives. For more info on skincare products and silicones, you may wan tot check out this article http://www.askcosmetics.com/myths.htm

I have been much more conscious of what I have been using on my body and I have had such great improvements to my skin hair and nails from going as green as I possibly can.

I know it is the cheapest you can get but I have washed my hair using a no sulfate shampoo once a week, and conditioner washing with GASP V05 and suave naturals (the only silicone free conditioners I was able to find at my local walgreens) and my hair has drastically changed for the better. I am currently washing my acne prone skin with baking soda and making some homemade masks, IMPROVED! So now I am on a quest to start replacing my makeup, moisturizers, etc!

I have noticed everything that I have been using and all the money I have been wasting is really just that: A WASTE! Everything in your skin and haircare routine can be replaced with more natural and at the same time cheaper alternatives. Most of the time you are paying for the added ingredients, that are only doing more harm! OK I will step off my green box now, I am really not a treehugger just noticing that these home remedies and methods have been working for me then any products I have ever used! I am going to be making another thread on how you too can replace your PRODUCTS with some NATURAL ALTERNATIVES, soon!

You could try using jojoba oil to moisturize your skin, instead of lotion. In my humble opinion, one does not need sunscreen unless they are in the sun for hours. I predict that in a couple of years scientist will come out with studies showing that the chemicals in sunscreen are much worse than getting a little natural sun. or you could just wear a hat

omg, raw honey! As a naturally moisturizing and deep-cleansing scrub, a teaspoon or so w/warm water. It makes your skin glow, clears up blemishes and leaves you soft. you can get the good stuff at farmer's markets and health food stores.

Second this! I just posted in another thread about this. I can't believe how well it works on my poor acne-prone skin.
