So I had LASIK Thursday afternoon, and it's now about 24 hours later, so I wanted to post an overview, since I know a few people had mentioned they were interested.
The procedure:
They give me 3 valium in case I was nervous, but I'm pretty calm, so I didn't take any.
The whole procedure, including prep time, taping my eye (so I couldnt blink), laser, post time (putting in antibiotics and anti-inflammatories) was less than 15 minutes. It was simple and painless: a few parts felt weird or odd, but nothing painful or dreadful.
When my doctor was done, he told me to sit up, and asked me what I could see. For the first time, i could read the clock on the wall.
At first it was weird...it was like being underwater with your eyes open...I could see but it was distorted. On the way home, I had no pain.
The doctor had told me to go home, eat, then sleep as much as possible.
I finally took a valium to make me sleep. When I do sleep for the next week, I have to wear goggles so I don't accidentally rub my eye or get poked with a pillow or something haha. They're pretty comfy though.
When I woke up, everything was crystal clear. For the first time since I was 5, I could actually see the TV...I dont mean the stations or shows, I mean the TV itself. My entire life, it's just been a giant blurred lump, indistinguishable from anything else in the living room.
I wasn't in any pain. When i first woke up, my eyes just felt very dry, like they do if you stay up too long. I have to put in drops for a few days 4 times a day, and once I put them in, my eyes felt totally normal.
My doctor actually called me last night to make sure I was okay...and I told him I was fine, but bored out of mind! I wasn't allowed to read or watch TV for the first day, so I was going a little nutty.
I finally downloaded a book on my Ipod, took another valium to sleep, then crashed into bed.
I had my post-op appointment this morning to make sure I'm okay, and they did another eye test on me. My eyes are AT LEAST 20/15. I could read the very last line of the eye chart with ease (This from the girl who couldn't see the chart, let alone the giant E, two days ago)
I'm now cleared to read, go on the computer (obviously), watch TV, drive, whatever.
This is easily the best decision I have ever made.
If anyone has specific questions, or if you want to know more about the procedure itself, let me know!
