Default Should I start dancing with the economy the way it is?

Hey everyone! I'm a newbie, obviously, and I was just wondering whether or not it'd be a good idea for me to start dancing right now with the economy being the way it is?

I've wanted to strip for a long time. I did it for a couple nights when I was 18, but my boyfriend at the time was NOT having it, so I quit. Now I've got a boyfriend who is totally comfortable with me doing it, and I really would love to get back into it. The club I worked in before is now looking for dancers, too, so it seems like great timing... but I just don't know if I'm getting myself into a situation where I'm going to be completely disappointed when it comes to money. What do you girls think? Am I wasting my time getting back into this NOW with money the way it is nowadays?

    Thanks for your help!!!

It really depends on your location, how the particular club is doing, and how much you hope to be taking home. It's certainly not the best time to be a dancer, but it's still better (for some of us, anyway) than a lot of entry level jobs out there.

It also seems like it varies area to area and club to club. Of course, you might not know until you try.

If you can succeed and maintain your personal goals (not what everyone assumes every dancer makes aka $1000 a night) at a bad economic time I'd say go for it. I am in the same boat as you right now. Took a break from dancing, and even despite the economy, I am going to get back into it. I feel if I can succeed in a bad economic time, when the economy does recover (if it ever does) I will be prepared for it!

Its all relative to what your idea of a "good" night is.

When the economy was rockin, I was cranky when I only made 5-600 bucks. Now that the economy has slowed, my attitude has changed when I walk with that same amount.

My first shift ever I made $110 and I was STOKED that I didn't have to carry heavy trays of sizzling fajitas up and down stairs or do sidework.

Regardless of the economy, there is still potential to make a lot of money in this industry if that is what you want.

Every little bit helps. Just don't get discouraged bc you're not doing so well at first.

It never hurts to try, if nothing else you can make some "new girl'' money, just don't quit your day job quite yet.

I wouldn't quit your day job till you're certain you'll be able to make money there... that's for sure.
Many of us still do okay... but there are also girls who are working 40+ hours a week and still not making/barely making enough to pay their bills.

keep your day job and just work on the weekends. you'll get your hustle up and when the economy gets back to where it was you'll be a spectacular hustler and be making bank.

^ She didn't say how many days she danced. She might only dance two days a month for the $500.

She said she made 500 a month at her day job. Not at the club. I'm surprised so many people missed that

Thanks everyone for your answers and suggestions. I'm currently not working, so dancing would be my only job. I am still applying at places, but I'm a student and a mommy right now, so it's tough to fit in a job that'll have a set-schedule, ya know?

Anyway, I'm managing right now alright. I get financial support from my ex-husband, and my boyfriend usually takes pretty good care of me. I figured that, since I'm not making any money on my own right now, any cash I make dancing will just be extra. I still really wanna get into exotic dancing soon, though... both for the money and the experience. Just gotta get my body back in shape first!

    Thanks again!

I felt like I could count on making $250-$300 a night in San Francisco ( this is summer / fall 2008 ). I'm sure that girls who really know what they are doing make a lot more in that city and I'm sure that some make less. That's just what I experienced. I also didn't work a lot of weekend shifts, so I really don't know the potential for them. I worked at a couple clubs ( one high end, one more of a dive ) and made roughly the same at both. I will say though that I kind of expected to make more. I had previous sales experience at my other job and consider myself a really strong sales person. It takes time to adjust sales to inside the club though and I didn't give it a really good chance. I bailed soon after starting because it was stressing my boyfriend out and I was working 16-17 hour days ( working at the club after my day job ) so that I didn't have to pay out extra travel costs. I'm SURE my numbers could have been higher if I:
    1. established regulars
    2. charged more than $20 for dances ( I didn't know you could - stupid ! )
    3. stayed until 2a.m. each night I was there ( I'd usually leave at 1 - I was just DONE by then and couldn't push my body any further ).

I'm going to edit this post out soon. I just know that when I started, my big question was really " how much can I make at this " ,so I thought I'd give you my rough numbers.

I started at the worst time for dancing (three months ago, so summer, bad economy) and at a new club so it was suuuper slow.

However, I find I have a better attitude than a lot of the more seasoned strippers at the clubs I've worked at because I am just clueless as to how bad it really is. When girls complain about only making $200 on a week night I just sort of shake my because to me that's pretty decent. When girls complain about how dead the club is I just sort of shake my head because it's probably busy compared to my first club and I don't really know any better.

I think it's a lot easier for me to make little money because I don't have the same expectations as girls who have been working for years. This works in my favor a lot because often girls will go home early because its dead and they decide its not worth it to them (this was last Tuesday, almost everyone had gone home because it was such a sucky night, I got a VIP and made $820 in the last hour) or not approach certain customers cause they know they wont spend a lot of money (whereas I figure whatever, there's no one else I'll go hustle them) or are ungrateful when customers only tip them a few dollars on stage or in dances or a cheaper drink, whereas I am pretty much grateful to any customer that hands me money unless he was an asshole, and this always leads to more $$$.

I say it all comes down to if you want to do it then do it. Sure the money is not always great every night but its better then doing some other job. If I was not stripping I would not have as much time for college. I would have had to work two or even three jobs to get by. So if you want to do it and it works for you, then by all means go for it. I am sure you will rock!!

Yeah, I made $1000 back my first week too (I only worked one more day than you did) and I was like OH MY GOD MONIES! It's amazing how valuable money becomes when you get used to not being a dancer.

One of my first blogposts back in 2007 was about how $200 a night is equivalent to a $70,000 salaried job.

Good blog britney!! Ive been reading it all morning, haha!!

I know girls bitch about ONLY making $200 a night, bc I do too, def sucks when U can remember nights where u use to make $1500 once a week, or average $500+ constantly... After not dancing for 2 years and being broke, its honestly HUMBLED me, and Im happy w/ my little $200 per night esp with the way things are now.

Again, I say, try it out.. 200 is better than NOTHING!

I'm getting spoiled- last thursday after tipping out the DJ (I always give him 10% off the top or $10, whichever is more), house fee, and transportation I took home $360 and felt a tinge of regret over not making enough to take home a solid $400. Then I snapped myself back into reality and realized $60/hr is more than ANY of my friends or family members make, by a longshot...
