Default Quick question for all you computer techies

Does anybody know if $350 a reasonable price to convert a logo from 72 dpi-web ready to 300dpi print ready? Seems high, since I've already paid for the design, but I know nothing about what kind of labor it would include to put it in vector file format (I think that's what they called it).

Please help! I don't wanna be taken here but I do want to be fair!
    Thanks!

Are you buying the higher DPI logo from the person who made it? If yes, they should already have it in that size. You can not go from a low dpi to a high dpi without it being too pixelated. You can only increase the size to about 10%. The original designer should have that size for you. If they original designer is charging you that amount, then yes, they are nuts. Because it's not costing them a penny.

Considering you can buy your own software to do it for less than that (or probably find something for free), that may be a bit high...

Vector graphics should be able to be saved to any raster file type at a specified dpi... Vector is dpi independent.

OTOH if you only have a bit map format and that is all that exists, then upscaling it from 72 to 300dp is (about a) 4x4 increase; you can do it yourself with a paint program but the edges will likely look blurry (aka pixelated). It is the same reason you can't take a photo shot at say 2Mega Pixels and expect it to look amazing when printed at higher resolutions; if the detail is not there it is not there, though some sophisticated programs might do a pretty good job at guessing it given that this is a relatively simple design.

If the artist is charging to create an scalable vector image file from the lower/fixed resolution bitmap file that might be a fair price; but no idea - never had it done. Given what it would cost to buy software, learn it, vs your time, it's not a huge sum of money.

Just be sure you get the vector image file at the end of the deal so you can scale to whatever resolution you need (for print or web).

Yeah, but I could find a program to turn a bitmap into a vector then output again into a higher quality bitmap in about 30 minutes, and I'm not a graphics person... (I've done it before at my old job...)...

But, the best thing would be to get a comparative quote or two... not directly in that biz, so I am not sure of the rates...

Here's a website that will convert a bitmap file to a vector format:

It depends. A higher resolution image effectively has more information then the original. You can't make information for free. If you could you could take a low quality image taken with your camera phone, convert it to vector format, scale it up 10x, and guess what? You won't have 10x more detail. If we could, there would be no need for 10MP cameras and we could have just stuck with or 1MP or less and done the conversion to vector later.

In some cases it can work, if the original image has certain properties, but even then detail like angled lines and curves is likely to look blocky when scaled up because when scanning something at a lower resolution, a pixel is on or off in the lower resolution... our brains can sometimes guess pretty well by looking at the whole image at the difference between a line that crosses through a pixel, but how well a computer program can do this ... depends on the sophistication of the program and again on the nature of the image.

PJ - send me the file via email, I will have our graphics people convert it for you if the stuff above hasn't fixed your problem.
