    Default Not sleeping

I got home hours ago. I should be sleeping... and I can't. This has been going on for WEEKS and it's driving me insane! I don't understand. I know Im tired, I know I need to sleep. I even know I need somewhat of a "normal" schedule because classes start in a week and I'll be in school at 9am. So wtf am I supposed to do? What do you do when you can't sleep that doesn't involve drugs (not even tylenol pm)?
Sorry I missed church. I was too busy practicing witchcraft and becoming a lesbian.

Are you having a busy mind when you are trying to sleep? Has there been a lot of stress lately....money issues, relationship issues, work issues?

I ask because I have found that waking up early and not being able to get back to sleep, or just not getting to sleep at all is often because we are having anxious thoughts or regrets or fears playing over and over in our heads.

If this is the case, the best remedy I've found is noticing the thoughts and trying deep breathing meditation...just going inside your body and noticing all your various body parts. This distracts you from your busy mind.

If you continue to not be able to sleep, get up and get on the puter or read or clean the house. Try again later.

If it isn't thoughts that are stressing you, then...well...nevermind.

Trust me, I feel ya. I made this post a couple months ago...

    http://forum.stripperweb.com/showthr...light=insomnia

I went days with only gettting an hour or two a night, some nights with nothing. I finally caved in and took ambien for a bit. I had tried tylenol pm and some "natural" remedies, but nothing was working. After a couple weeks of Ambien (not every night, but nearly) I decided I wanted off of it (hate the way the next day feels). Since then I've been doing better *knock wood* but I still wake up a lot in the middle of the night... and I've still had a couple here and there where I lay in bed for literally 5-6 hours with no sleep.

All I know for sure is that the anxiety you get from not sleeping makes sleeping worse. It's a cycle. You worry about falling asleep, so you don't fall asleep. As soon as you start "trying" to sleep, you're screwed. The thing that works best for me is to try to limit your time in bed even if you DO have a bad night. In other words, get up out of bed after 6-8 hours no matter what. Do NOT nap. Only go back to bed when you intend to go to sleep shortly.

Sorry, wish I had more help for you, but it's been bugging me too.

I don't know if this helps but I used to have the WORST insomnia. Like, awake till 11am and sleeping till 9pm. I started getting B12 shots to boost my energy and I've found that I can't even keep my eyes open when I get home from work. I used to be totally awake getting home from the club but now I just crash and wake up eight hours later. I don't know if it's a coincidence or not but it's working for me and it's completely natural.

do NOT take tylenol pm or benadryl, that shit gives you a hangover. you also build up a tolerance to diphenhydramine fairly quickly.

i'd suggest small doses of melatonin, but make sure you don't use it for more than two weeks at a time - you don't want to build up a tolerance. think 2 mg.

I struggle with this too. My biggest thing is that I will think too much and work myself into a panic ( complete with fast heartbeat , anxiety , fear of future ect. )
Professional massage helps ( they keep me relaxed even days after ) . My partner understand that I often need help falling asleep and will tickle my back or play with my hair ( which zones me out and puts me to sleep ). But ...... I struggle with this so much. It causes fights too. I don't understand how he can sleep so easily. I often feel ignored when he can just crash and I can't. I struggle to fall aspleep probably 5 days out of 7.

A good work out early in the day helps me too...........

I kind of think that these struggles are your body's way of telling you something is off. I know I probably need to make some changes ( and change is hard ). Yours might be giving you the same clues by keeping you awake.

If you do go the drug route ...... I get the best sleep on a cap of nyquil ..... but I try not to take it more than a couple times a month.

You could also cut back coffee.

Damn ... my last massage ( by a student ) was shitty. I'm only going to licensed therpists from now on.

I was just reading about insomnia (hubby). Here's some websites I found useful:

Establishing a schedule is good start. I've always been the type to splurge on my bedroom - a relaxing decor, good bed, nice sheets, heavy drapes, etc. No computer, tv, eating or working in the bedroom - just sleep & sex.

Turns out my husband was playing video games in bed AFTER I'd fall asleep...

Bright lights trigger you to be alert. The visualization/breathing/meditation exercises hockeybobby mentioned are on point. Sleep masks & ear plugs are also helpful. I like to run the a/c to cool the room, plus the purring helps me sleep when I'm not using the ear plugs. Putting the clock in the next room prevents you from fixating on it. It also means you HAVE to get up in order to turn it off INSTEAD off just hitting snooze.

    Sweet dreams.

^^You know what? I'm so weird. Sex or masturbation jazzes me up.

Jay, have you tried a hot shower and then a cup of hot tea? I do that sometimes; sit on the couch in my PJs and sip my tea while watching something mindless. The Yogi nighttime tea is great.

Wow, I've been going through the exact same thing lately. It's a bitch, I've been up till 5am the past few nights, embroidering endlessly and praying for sleep. I used to use valerian root. a few years ago, that would have me literally passing out on the couch within a half hour of taking it. It doesn't seem to have such an affect on my anymore, but maybe it'll work for you.

they say watching tv or sitting in front of the computer can keep you up, so maybe avoid those things.

This is going to sound really odd... but I close my eyes and think about being wrapped in black velvet. The idea behind it is just to soothe yourself without thinking about anything in your regular life that will really get your brain going.
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.

don't go too hot. when you go to sleep, your body will naturally cool off. a warm/hot-ish shower is best. enough to relax you.

have you considered sleeping with a fan on for white noise? it helps block a lot of the little noises that can wake you up.

also, tv stimulates your brain. reading is the best thing you can do before bed.

finally.... try to keep most of your activities out of your bedroom. keep the bed for sex and sleep. when you get to the point that you're going to bed right before you pass out, your body and mind reset themselves so that they know bed = bedtime.
