Mind Blowing hair extensions- yes or no?

ok, i havent been thinking about getting the metal bonds in my hair for some time now. my hair is shoulder length and dyed platinum blonde. i look after it very well. i never blow dry it and only use straightners once maybe twice a week. i wear a hair piece at work but am getting bored and want extensions for some volume and alittle bit more length.
honestly tho, how damaging are these to the natural hair? i know if i go to a salon, she will tell me my hair will be fine. just wondered what u girls thought especially as my hair is bleached aswell.
    any help much appreciated.

I think all extensions are damaging to some degree. I don't have any experience w/micro ring ones.

Yes, I have had them. At first I had the silicone lined ones, and those damaged my hair a little bit, I had a few small bald spots. I then put in Hairlocs, and those didn't damage at all, but they shed like CRAZY! I installed around 300 strands, and lost 1/4-1/3 of that every month it seemed like! These were the most expensive out of all of them, 1800$ for a full head. Also, the quality of the hair was bad, it got ratty really fast, and I tried both the Italian and Spanish hair. Then I got DreamCatchers (the Paris Hilton ones) and these were my favorite. The quality of the hair was awesome, it was Scandanavian hair. It stayed silky forever, and would hold curl all night. I only installed 75 strands, to add length, and these didn't damage my hair at all! I had these for about a year, and when I took them out my hair had grown and was healthy.

I think the damage has to do with how they are installed, the quality of the hair, and how you take care of them. Every hair extension is damaging in some way. I think it depends on how much hair from your head they put in each little bond. I felt like sometimes it wasn't balanced, meaning only a few strands of my hair were holding on to twice as much from the extension, causing too much tension, and pulling it out at the root. Also, if you get low quality hair, you'll be tugging at it much more, causing more tension and breakage. You need to really be consistent with having them moved up every two months (IMO), and that will help tremendously too. Think about when you get acrylic nails, and you wait to have them filled in. They grow out and cause too much "weight" on your natural nail, and break off easier. The same goes with the hair extensions, I feel like the closer they are to your scalp, the less weight and tension on your natural hair.

I have had every kind of extension in my head and I absolutely HATED the micro rings!

I gave the silicone lined microrings a try one time last year because I couldn't find the shrinkies that I liked. I get all of my products from http://www.manedepot.com/ feel free to pm me for more info.

What I like about protein fusion style extensions is that the resulting bond is a three dimensional cylindrical shape with smoothed edges that are created when you roll the bond between your fingers. When it grows out, there is not an uneven edge, it just flows into the strand.

When you close the microrings, you have a flat 2 dimensional square shaped surface. When it grows out, the edge of that flat surface irritated my scalp. I found myself constantly itching my scalp starting at about 2 weeks worth of growth because that flat edge was further away from my scalp and had more room to move.

Anyone else notice this? Maybe it's just me but I HATED the microrings and will choose shrinkies over them anyday.

That is WEIRD! It makes sense, but they never made my head itch at all! My only qualm with any type of heat bonded extension, is the havoc it can wreak by installing and taking them out. I've heard of girls having to soak their hair in olive oil the day before taking out fusions in order to help the bond deteriorate. I've heard they use an acetone/acid based substance to dissolve the keratin bonds, and that simply fried through my hair! I try to avoid heat and chemicals simply for the fact that my hair is baby fine. I have a lot of it, but the texture is so soft and fine, any type of heat or chemical can singe/fry it off. If someone has thicker coarser hair, I would say go for the fusions, but for people with damaged/thin/weak hair, go for something gentler, like micro rings or even clip ins.

Now, I have heard of shrinkies, just not too many people do them anymore, at least in my neck of the woods. It seems like they would be a less damaging alternative to micro rings, and definitely to fusion, only if the stylist does not use pre bonded hair, and uses loose hair. I'm sure this would be more time consuming and expensive, but worth it to avoid the acetone solution when removing them. But, it seems that they would shed more if the stylist used loose hair, so I suppose that would be a trade off... Again, the most important factor is the stylist and his/her experience.

I would love to hear more about them though, I'm googling them right now! As far as micro rings, there are different brands and types just like anything else, there are even different types of the silicone lined ones. Some are smaller than others, and different colors. One issue I have with the micro rings, is that they blend in sooo much better with dark hair than blonde. The bond is way more obvious on blonde hair IMO. Also, they are metal, but painted different shades of blonde or brown to blend with whichever hair color. Make sure you get the bonds themselves replaced regularly, or the paint will chip off and you will see gold or silver metal, at least I had this problem. I'm sure what type of styling products you use will affect this as well. It was to the point that I was coloring in the little metal bonds with a magic marker!

That was another thing...the blonde didn't match and you could see a whole bunch of little itchy metal squares lined up all over my head!

Ive had both the glue and the microrings several times. I prefered the microrings as they kept the extensions seperated and were hard to notice, but my extensions never seemed to look nice past 6 weeks- always looked a bit flat. After a while my hair was thinning, so I took them out for good. All extensions even when they are put in well do pull on the hair.

I didn't need any acetone to get the silicone lined microrings out. After about 5 weeks of itching they just slid right off with the natural oils in my hair after 2-3 days of not washing.

"Silicone lined links" is pretty descriptive but you know.... so many hair extension techniques have spiffy brand (I guess) names like Luxhair, Dreamcatchers, Microchet etc. Thats sorta what i was getting at. LOL.

More funy names for extension stuff can be found here.... http://www.nychairsalon.com/hairextension.html

^^^^ I've browsed that website, that lady looks like she would be the guru of hair extensions. She does EVERY type! There are several brand names, but they're all basically the same thing. Some might be silicone lined, some might be copper (or a different metal), some are larger and smaller, all depending on the brand. Also, each brand sells their own brand of hair to go along with them. The hair quality varies GREATLY between brands. There's Hairlocs, DreamCatchers, Eurolocs, all these I've had! It's kind of like shopping at Target, there's the name brand and the Target brand, but it's the same product, maybe a slight variation. You can just order off label generic micro rings that have no brand name and install them, and they will be pretty much the same as a name brand. With that being said, there is a significant difference between micro rings and silicone lined micro rings. Also, I think some brands call this method cold fusion.

Guen, that new cold fusion technique out by Great Lengths, is that the same as micro ring installs? It says it uses a sonic wave frequency or something to attach them to your hair. What is this?

I went to get my hair extensions before, but the lady said my hair was too short. it's boy short-she just said it as soon as i walked in. But the top hairs are somewhat 2' to 3' long. I have a lot of hair, and they are thick-would this help to hide the rings? I really, really want them.

And does anyone know anyplace in London that does deamcatches. Or if anything, it there another way that works for shorter hair other than wigs cause i tried those but It doesn’t work for me cause my head feels like it’s on fire, cause i already have a lot of hair as it is, and I’m paranoid when doing the pole.

The good hair wigs, especially made for you, are mighty £££ and I thought I would rather extensions. What do you girls think? Wait for hair extensions, or just buy the fancy ass wig. All I want is great long, silky hair...that looks and feels real.

post a pic of your hair! Sometimes if it's to short, it will look like a mullet after extensions. Your hair has to be long enough to blend in the extensions, or it will look like a stringy mullet. You could try a half wig, or fall.

    This: http://www.hairuwear.com/jessica.aspx?pgID=997

This is a half wig, a lot of girls at work wear this particular brand.

I don't like extensions. They feel heavy and uncomfortable. sometimes I feel like my hair is being pulled out.

j.d. not necessarily will it look like a mullet , however to blend in the short pieces on top you would have to add almost twice as much hair then on average and have to go up high on the head to low on bottom to hide the short hairs.. which can be costly depending on the type of extensions that you choose. i have very short hair and do that but as i said alot of hair is needed to blend not to look like a mullet, i use the strand by strand fusion kind but have used weaves and they worked but the hair was rough. as long as your hair is at least long enough to cover the bonds and lay natural and of coarse have to money ,you can use extensions.
