    Default banks and traveling

Okay I travel around kinda a lot and I've noticed my bank doesn't have many branches outside my home area. And I can't seem to find many banks except fifth third that has branches in a lot of areas. Would it be worth it to open an account at a bank of areas I'm more likely to be in a lot also? I'm thinking about https://www.wachovia.com/ possible. I've noticed this on has several locations... When I get home I can write a check to myself for whatever I want to put in my saving back home and leave the account to drop money when I'm on the road instead of mailing back money orders that can get lost in the mail or carrying large sums of cash everywhere I go which I'm not a huge fan of either. (Though it's fun to take pictures of it when it adds up a lot, lol).

Just looking for input and other ideas and possibly good banks to look at. My home is located in Cincinnati, Ohio but I could end up anywhere basically. =/

When I moved to San Francisco I had to switch banks. I ended up going with Wellsfargo because they were so prevalent on the west coast. So yes, you might want to open up multiple accounts - especially if they are free.

The other option is always the pre-paid visa cards - GreenDot is the most popular. They are the ones you find in Walgreens, CVS, Wal-mart etc. Almost every state has one of those. It's a small fee to load the money onto the card but the nice thing is that you can also use it almost right away - usually within 30 mins - so there's no waiting for checks to clear from one bank to another.

You can look online to see if there's branches both at home and in the area you will be traveling in (for example US Bank has a lot of locations) Otherwise just mail money orders to yourself. You are the only person that can cash the money order. You can buy them during the day at any post office or bank.

I moved to Puerto Rico which has only 1 bank in common w/ the u.s. and i was nowhere near that bank.

I was unable to open up an account in Puerto Rico because my apartment is all utilities included and i needed bills in my name.

The result was i kept my bank back in the states and Western Unioned money direct to my bank and utilized online banking to pay my bill.s

I ended up getting a Wachovia and BOA accounts. I have business accounts with both and my personal is with Wachovia. I haven't had any problems with either so far, but I prefer Wachovia over BOA definitely.

    Isn't Western Union expensive?
