I've noticed through male friends and talking to SC customers that men sometimes seem ill informed about STDs and their sexual health. I know every time I go to a gyno they ask questions about my sexual history offer STD and HIV testing but, from what I've heard primary care doctors rarely ask men these same questions. It also seems that guys (not all) are more squeamish about visiting a clinic like planned parent or asking their regular docs about getting tested. I was talking to a male friend then reading posts about extras girls and STDs and it just got me thinking.
I'm wondering if Doctors are failing these guys in some ways. I'm sure there are many men that have the sense to ask for testing and/or check out websites that give credible info on how to avoid contracting anything and suggest things like getting getting tested. I've heard of so many guys that refuse to use condoms because they think they are less likely then women to contract anything while, there might be some small truth to that in reguards to certain diseases, who exactly do they think are giving them to females? One guy told me he had blood taken and was sure he was tested for EVERYTHING (HIV/AIDS testing requires a consent form at least in PA; he didn't sign one). Another guy said he was tested for every strain of HPV -there isn't a test for men. I'm just wondering if primary care Doctors should be as vigilent when seeing their male patients as gynos are to women. It seems like many men are not informed.
I'm not trying to insult guys if you've read the Over Heard in the Dressing Room thread you can see there are girls just as ignorant about sexual health - but it seems like we ladies have more access to the information. As far as I know young men don't usually have a doctor specializing in their reproductive system.
