Mind Blowing Does pole dancing take a toll on your body?

I've been dancing for a few years; and since day one I've been poledancing, and not easy things either. Our poles spin so were having to hold on and grip tighter the faster we spin, it feels like it's taking a toll on my body completely. My collar bone is crackling, my knee's are cracking, and my right knee hurts all the time, i can't move it certain ways! ah! This wouldn't be a problem if I were 70, but I'm 21!

So, question.. has pole dancing taken a toll on your body and what kind?

Yes, it has definitely taken a toll on my body. I don't know how much longer I can keep this up. My body feels like one big hurt the morning after I work. But the things that give me the most pain are my knees, and my back. It's awful.

I've only worked 2 weeks and I can feel my knees! I'm hoping that my legs will get used to the work, and in the meantime I plan on starting glucosamine supplements.

The pole has never really been a problem for me, not counting the minor aches or pinches from learning a new trick. The floor work is what's really tough for me; our tile stage just tears my knees up, and we get cut sometimes, too, because of the broken tiles with corners missing, etc.

Yup, my knees crack, my ankles and back hurt, I seem to have permanent bruises on my legs.... But I look really good on the pole!

probably related to diet and training problems. to be sure you'd want to browse some acrobatics forums if they exist, or look up data on acrobatic performers. they do harder work, but it is pretty close in many respects in terms of body areas affected, so then you'd know if these ailments are common to such exercise or not.

I have arthritis in my left shoulder now. My hip requires meds every few months to reduce the inflamation and I can barely make it down stairs when it acts up. I've stretched tendons and ligaments in both knees from dancing. I have constant problems with my left calf. I no longer bruise because I used to stay bruised so much.. If I bruise its bad.I also have hearing loss and after a weekend of being in the club my ears ring for a day after leaving. They still allow smoking in my club too and I have to use nasal sprays for the congestion that ensues in the moning after working there. Dancing has about killed me lol.

Your body is going to age naturally, so it may not respond the way it once did. However, you are still really young so I'd recommend going in to see the doctor. Chances are you have been taught improper methods and it's putting extra strain on your muscles and joints. Once you talk to your doctor to find out if that's the problem you might want to see about some instruction from a proper pole instructor who has taken the time to learn how the body responds to the pole.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of the knee and back pain is related to the platforms. I've been pole dancing for more than 3 years and the only times I've experienced pain is when I've learned a certain skill that requires extreme movement but its only temporary. When I began feeling back and even hip pain, I learned it was because of those damn platforms. Things began to improve once I stopped wearing them and things got even better when I worked at a club that had a chiropractor on the premises. Its surprising that some clubs are so clueless when it comes to shoes for the entertainers. When platforms became fashionable in the 90s, it was announced that highschool girls were having back problems all because of those platforms. Now some clubs have the audacity to make platforms manditory when its a known fact that customers don't really care about shoes. I've talked with a number of customers who don't find the platforms to be the least bit appealing and some customers think barefeet (provided they're clean of course) are much sexier than heels. My goodness, you're more likely to make decent money when you're feeling comfortable rather than walking around work in pain.

i don't know if it's just the pole, or a combination of pole/shoes/ floor work/ etc, but i about need a fork lift to get me out of bed sometimes. I shuffle around the house like an old man for the first few hours of the day.

Have you been stretching out before work? So many people don't know how to stretch properly. You should be stretching for at least 15 minutes, and you should hold each stretch for at least a long 30 seconds.

Actually it depends on your customers.
I get loads of guys who LOVE feet and LOVE my shoes. Several of them who have asked to BUY me shoes just to see me dance in them.

    Back on topic:
Idk... It seems likely you're maybe using some improper techniques if your knee is hurting all the time and you can't move it certain ways... That's not normal wear and tear.

I take the glucosamine as well. If you have problems now it will only get worse.
Ive danced for 5 years and my knees are SHOT. When I go down stairs any time of day they feel like they are just going to break and I'm going to collapse.. It's very painful and I've even lowered my heel height but still, by the end of a shift I'm almost crippled with knee pain. it suuuucks.

I'd say that's the biggest downfall for dancing with me.. How my back and knees hurt.. Your body definitely takes a serious toll. Plus the secondhand smoke.. Definitely not in there for our health!

Glucosamine=god. Maybe its just psychological but without my daily dose I feel like my knees are seizing up. I feel like Im 100 years old my back is so sore all the time. I'm thinking about investing in a weekly deep tissue massage.

I'm being taught the proper techniques; My knee's were hurting as is, and I had started doing one certain trick alot more (goddess) so I wouldnt have to do as much floor work, but instead of just a still goddess, im spinning extremely fast and just holding on right under my knee.. im more than sure that's it. So i stopped doing it atleast until my knee is back in order.. I don't drink water either.. maybe that has something to do with it. eh who knows..

I'm going to be the only wheelchaired stripper.

I just started having the knee problem. My right knee is in pain constantly and it cracks like crazy. My ex owns a Martial Arts studio and is into fitness and what not so I asked him what was up with my knee and his response "it's old age". LOL Soooo, I really have no real answer. I know I *am* getting older (30+) but I'm not an old lady. haha! But yea, my knee is really getting bad. When it rains, it hurts, when I bend down to look at something on the bottom shelf at the store, I can barely get back up and it REALLY hurts for the rest of the day. I feel old.

    Firemaiden: TILES?! OWWW wtf!

I've recently started taking joint supplements for my knees, they seem to be helping. Anyone else have feedback on Nature Made Triple Flex?

I'd also love to hear what works for you guys for the knee/joint pain.

LOL - who woulda thunk that a bunch of strippers are sitting around discussing aching joints and giving out advice as to what is the best meds for joint pain! It's not all fun n games my friends!

I don't even dance yet, but this is probably one of my biggest obstacle since I already have knee problems.
Ice is the best! I'd ice your knees after work, even if you get off late. I guarantee it will help!
And stretching is also good, but I would make sure you're body is warmed up first, or you can just cause more damage.

Well... I have broken a rib and my forearm from botched pole tricks when I first started so, yeh. But, my core is a lot stronger, so idk. It's a hell of a workout for sure.
