    Default Food cravings...

Do you give in to them when it's a food you literally never eat? I'm not talking junk food. I've always been of the opinion that your body needs something from that particular food and that's why you're craving it. I don't eat meat and my problem is that Im craving steak and that just isn't in my diet anymore and hasn't been for years. It's driving me crazy! It's all Im thinking about. Even right now and it's 930 in the morning and Im thinking about a big juicy piece of steak!!! It's not just today either. I've been craving steak for weeks. I know it will make me sooooo sick if I eat it... but I want to....

Give in, get sick, and it will reinforce you NOT wanting to eat meat?

Just because of the topic (nothing to do with my other "attention whore" post): my wife came up with the lovely combination of cottage cheese with mustard.

Hahahaha!!!!!! Oh god... I remember that... I was eating peanut butter on cucumber slices and drinking v8 tomato juice (which I despise btw) with chocolate chip cookies.

i've also always thought food cravings are a result of your body needing something, though i've read medical articles denying this. Maybe your iron is low? I was a vegetarian for 3 and a half years until one day i was driving up the road, minding my own business, when suddenly i wanted a hamburger so bad it was like someone stabbed me in the chest with a knife. And it couldn't be just any old burger, it had to be a big juicy whopper from burger king. Boy did it make me sick when i broke down and ate one. Normally if i get a food craving it's for better things, like an apple or a glass of red wine, so i go ahead and have it.

I'm 100% carnivore so I would just go ahead and eat one ... However, since you want to maintain your non-meat eating ways, you should try to figure out what you're body is missing that it thinks it will get from a steak. Possibly some Iron or maybe you just need a good dose of protein?

Is your protein intake adequate? Iron? B-vitamins? Fats? Or your body may just be craving variety.

Every New Year I want to devour all the sashimi w/shoyu + karashi. *sigh* But I know I'd be physically & emotionally ill afterward, so I don't (and that's just me).

    Everything in moderation.

There are certain things that smell good to me, but I would never eat.

If I know what you are talking about, yes, you will be sick... for days. In my opinion its just not worth it.

I've been a vegetarian for about the same amount of years and I feel ya on the whole meat issue. I smell it and it smells good but it just doesn't taste right to me. I tried to go back to poultry a couple years back and I just hate the texture of meat. Eat some boca or morning star meat...I know its not the same but you can really season and dress them up and they taste mighty fine after

Actually, before you go and buy all the faux meat products on the market to curb the cravings, let me suggest The New Now & Zen (maker of the famous UnTurkey):

    http://www.amazon.com/New-Now-Zen-Ep...2981761&sr=8-6

& a link for the UnTurkey itself since it isn't listed in the book:
    http://tofu.org/drupal/node/21

The author of the book makes amazing faux meats... unlike any I've had that were store bought.

As a vegetarian gone back to eating chicken and now going back to vegetarian, I hear what you are saying.
My body was like an 80 year old lady- no energy, felt like crap, craving meat, and being so active I just figured the problem was my body needed meat, so I gave in. After a few weeks of eating meat and feeling bad at every bite, I decided to go back to the non-meat eating diet. I just hate killing the little babies! But if i get to the point again were I think my body needs it, I will eat it, until I feel satisfied again.. I think our bodies need things, especially a very well balanced diet, and even though we may feel one way, our bodies may just need another.
So I do relate with what you are saying about the cravings. I think it does mean your body is in need, especially with red meat. If you are craving it, just give in and once your body has satisfied the craving, go back to your normal diet. Especially after you feel sick from eating it, you won't want it again for a loooooong time!

I'm not advocating that in this circumstance. I've been vegetarian for a very long time... I think it's been nearly 17 years. Even under the circumstances where I have accidentally ate food products containing ingredients like lard I was sick for a minimum of 3 days... sometimes more.

Certain food cravings do mean certain deficencies, and craving meat is an iron defiency, just like craving salt is a sodium deficency. You should to get tested on your iron levels. Are you vegetarian? It is really hard to have good iron levels when you are vegetarian because dairy absorbs iron and since you're not eating meat you're not in a good spot. However, if you cut out dairy, iron levels balance out.
No all cravings are deficency related, for example, if you've ever had a sugar craving. You don't need that stuff!
Don't break on a burger, you'll feel like crap afterwards. I've been vegan for 5 years and usually if you ignore it long enough it will go away. Maybe you could indulge in something else? Not neccesarily a fake meat, but Kylea's idea is really cool too!
Minalynx, sushi always makes me want to break!!! Haha, never have but oh my gosh I love it. Good thing I really like veggie sushi.
On a side note, I totally made vegan egg salad today. But it was good!

since i eat basically paleo (meat and vegetables and some fruit, super-low-carb), i don't get food cravings.

no rice/wheat/grains/beans/soy and my small amount of starch comes from stuff like broccoli or sweet potatoes. very easy to be satiated, so i never have cravings for stuff i never eat, since it's all stuff that would just make me kinda ill anyway.

^^ I have slices of chilled avocado instead. The texture/consistency is semi-similar, and it's great for dipping.

As for vegan egg salad, please post your recipe!

    Here's the one I use:

    Ingredients
1 lb extra firm tofu, drained
    1-2 stalks celery, finely minced
    1 teaspoon dried onion granules
    1 quart water
    1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 tsp sea salt (or to taste)
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper (or to taste)
    1/8 tsp Indian black salt*
    1/8 tsp turmeric
    2 tsp Dijon mustard
    1/8 tsp paprika
    Vegan mayo

    Directions
    Cut tofu into small cubes.
Boil water, vinegar + a pinch of salt on high heat.
Add tofu cubes, bring to boil again, and turn heat to medium.
    Simmer 15 minutes.
Drain tofu + sprinkle with black salt. Mix well.
Put 1/3 of tofu cubes in a bowl + mash. Mix in turmeric to make "egg yolk".
Mix in Dijon, paprika, vegan mayo, dried onion granules, s+p.
Add remaining tofu cubes + celery. Mix gently.

*Black salt smells/tastes like boiled eggs due to sulfurous mineral deposits in the salt.

If you give in ..... I recommend a Ribeye cut with a dry steak rub BBQed .

If you do give in, eat a teeny tiny portion or you'll be so sick.

I agree which is why I haven't done it yet. I mean I've wanted it for a good month I just can't bring myself to eat it bc I know I will be sick.
