Dizzy x-pole and skin toughening. owwwchhh!!!

maybe we should have a pole dance section??

anyways, I just got my titanium x pole. At work we have brass, which is what I've been dancing on for about 7 years. I can do a fair amount of tricks, but I want to be a GODDESS on the pole like all the beautiful women I am obsessed with on youtube.

Ok, so to all the ladies that are pole goddesses, how long did it take for your skin to get used to the x pole? I'm kind of high body fat @ 24% and I just started a serious body building diet to lower my fat percentage and increase my upper body strength.

I have very fair, soft skin. does that make a difference?

basically, I'm just looking for any tips or advice on how to strengthen my skin so it doesn't feel like its going to rip off.

Honestly, I am amazed at these women on youtube. I feel like a total beginner on this x pole even though I've been dancing for 7 years. at work I can do lots of flying spins, climbing, sitting, inverts, etc. but my legs are KILLING me when I try it at home.

any advice or encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

Eating a higher protein diet will toughen you up. That's what I did and I noticed a difference in my skin.

One of the pole goddesses at my old club said to put arnica cream on your inner thighs until you 'get used to it' but I haven't tried it yet.

thanks for asking this question because I thought it was just me that has this problem. I have the same exact pole as you do and it feels very different than the one at my club and also the place where i take pole classes. I was thinking about ordering a custom pole from where I take my class but I spent so much on the x pole.

yeah, this pole feels different than any other I have worked on. The site claimed it was similar to brass and I feel that it is NOTHING like brass except it is stained a yellow color. I almost just want to get a real brass pole since that's what I use at work anyways.

I hope that my skin adjusts to it, but honestly, I"m not super happy with this pole considering the money I spent on it. Maybe I'll like it in time.

I'm wondering if anyone else feels this way about their titanium poles.

and.. I'll say it again WE NEED A POLE SECTION for pole questions

Is brass a lot more expensive and does anyone know why brass sticks to the skin better?

    update:

I left my pole up for a few days with the window open in my room, and its like a totally different pole. It seems to have developed a grip.. maybe because of the rain and humidity. I'll probably use humidifier in the winter.

Also, I've noticed that if my body is warmed up, (I'll do some rebounding, squats and lunges) for a few minutes I have WAY better grip. Just as good if not better than the pole at work.

I have to say, that I have completely changed my opinion and I am extremely happy with this pole. I HIGHLY recommend it.

It's advertised as similar to brass because all the other poles are chrome, which are really slippery compared to the titanium pole.

As for the painful skin: you just keep doing those tricks until the skin toughens up and doesn't hurt anymore. That's what I did. You'll also stop bruising in those spots after a while.

Hi ...it's been a while since I've been around so I thought I'd check in.

I have 3 types of poles that I use regularly...titanium, chrome and stainless. I occasionally use a brass pole too but not as often anymore. I wouldn't say that the titanium is just like brass but it's closer to brass than chrome or stainless because they have similar properties.

First...brass, and titanium, grip more than chrome or stainless because they are more porous. Being more porous, they absorb the oils from your skin so that you don't slip as much.

This also means that they absorb more heat from your body and a warm pole grips better than a cold pole.

Your skin doesn't actually toughen up...at least not on your legs and other soft parts the way you form callouses on your hands. However, eventually you learn to grip so that you don't get pole burn from sliding wrong, but instead you learn to engage your muscles without thinking about it, creating a barrier of sorts that stops it from hurting as much as well as stopping the sliding that causes pole burn.

I hope that makes sense...it's much easier to explain in person than trying to write it out. For most people it's just a matter of getting use to a move...then you learn a new move and you have to figure out how to do it so it doesn't hurt either.

Personally I find brass the easiest to work on but the hardest for upkeep so I don't use them in my studios.

Arnica pills (you can get them at Whole Foods) will help a ton with the bruising, too.
