Default I'm Coming to Your Town-FEED ME!!!

I'm coming to make it rain for all of ya, but first I want to eat like a local.

    1) What food is your town/region known for and where are you taking me to get it?

    2) Most everyone has a favorite mom and pop hole-in-the-wall kinda place. What's yours and what do you get there? (doesn't have to be regional dishes)

    Rochester, NY:

    Home of the Garbage Plate.

Tahou's (now Steve T's), founder of the Garbage Plate.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Garbage Plate, it is basically your choice of a "main" (hamburgers, hotdogs, or sausage [just the meat, no buns]) piled on top of 3 or more "sides" (usually baked beans, mac salad, home fries, french fries, whatever else) with condiments, all mixed together into one heaping pile of awkward deliciousness.

Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, NY. Which isn't a mom and pop place (there are a couple of awesome diners) but it really is amazingly good food.

Ft Lauderdale FL.....ummm...there really isnt a regional food here. Unless you count all the cuban places in Miami. I do know some really great restaurants here though.

There is Key Lime Pie though....and there are a lot of places here that make it WELL!!

Ew. I will say I was somehow talked into the breakfast version of that when I was up in that area many years ago. Eggs, home fries, tomato, and I dont even know what else. It was on a HUGE plate and piled sky high.

Everyone at the table was laughing at me! Including my friend I was traveling with and the two sweet young boys that had breakfast with us. (just FYI...no this was not any kind of OTC action. They were like 20 yrs old and just joined the Army and were leaving the next day. If even WE had suggested having sex they prob would have cum in their pants!! They were super shy and super sweet...insisted on paying for breakfast and just wanted to have breakfast with 2 pretty girls before they were deployed. Broke my heart actually)

^That does sound good. I'm sure it's not close to native, but there's a Brazilian steakhouse in town that has key lime pie as a dessert that I LOVE...

Austin, TX is becoming a big foodie destination. Its kind of hard to single out the best local thing since the town is more about awesome local versions of food from other regions.

South Congress has a bunch of awesome places to check out. Definitely hit up Home Slice for some delicious pizza.

If you want to hit up the most amazing movie-going experience ever, check out the Alamo Drafthouse. Drafthouses are actually popping up all over Texas, but the Austin ones (especially the Ritz) is the best and most amazing. Good food too!

Flip Happy Crepes is also pretty amazing. Cute little trailer where you can get sweet and savory style crepes.

We also have a nice Chinatown center that serves up some good Pho. Maybe not as good as in California, but its super tasty

Also check out the Drag downtown for college kid favorites.

Around here is one my top 10 restaurants of ALL time and I don't hand out that title lightly. Don Gabriel's family run hole-in-the-wall, I mean an utter dive, Mexican Restaurant, run by he, his wife, and daughter. It is as good and even better then the best home style Mexican food I've had when I lived in CA. Good for you? Hell no, so I limit my visits but just thinking about it makes me drool. If you go you got to bring your own drink, or you'll have to buy something from the little mini-mini-other-family owned store that sub-leases out the other half of this dive. I highly recommend the tacos, Mexican style of course, Pork with Pineapple is YUMMY and the Hot Red creamy sauce (unlike traditional salsa) is truly OMFG.

Still haven't got over that? If you want the equivalent of a dad making his kid smoke a carton of cigarettes so they never do again, go to a Brazilian steakhouse... hell, half the time I don't want to eat steak again when I leave...

Seen 'em, but haven't tried 'em. I'll keep it in mind for the next time we have a "where do you want to go? I don't know, where do you want to go?" argument.

Mimi's is yummy! They're in lots of places, but the only time I've ever been to one was in TX.

    Austin, Tx:

Kerbey Lane for an eclectic mix of just good, solid dishes on the cheap.
Uchi for sushi. Spendy, but worth every dime.
    I second the Alamo Drafthouses.
All of the little airstream trailers on South Congress have awesome food.
Matter of fact, one of them is called Hey Cupcake and has the best cupcakes I have ever had.

Now I know we have quite a few Texans posting here, so I sort of expected to get Texas style BBQ and chicken fried steak recs. I will make an exception for those in Austin, as I consider Austin, as well as Madison, WI, and Boulder, CO, to be more like west coast cities, a little more progressive and eclectic than their surroundings, and would expect that to be reflected in their food scene.

CK-I'd definitely count Cuban as representative of So Fla.

    x-sounds like my kinda mexican

If you were to come to my neck of the woods, I'd reccomend a freshly cooked Dungeness Crab (forget your blue, stone, and king crabs, Dungeness rules!), a loaf of true SF sourdough, and a bottle of chardonnay (Rombauer or Cakebread) or maybe a bottle of Gloria Ferrer bubbly, enjoyed picnic style with a view of the Golden Gate.

I never stay in one place for too long, but lately I have found myself in fabulous Rhode Island

Regionally... well, we have some good seafood but you can get that MA too, but when it gets down to uniquely RI things, it's all about the beverages. In the summer try a Dell's Lemonade. You can get them all over the place in the state and they're so refreshing in the heat. Something I'm not personally recommending (but is very much a Little Rhodie thing) is coffee syrup. I haven't tried it but it sounds icky so... ha!

Favorite local restaurant, for me, is Byblos on Meeting st. In Providence. I never used to be much of a foodie and I would always roll my eyes when people would compare eating a really good dish to an orgasm...but then I tried the beef shawarma here. The way the season the meat is outrageously delicious and the juices that explode into your mouth are just so satisfying (heh ). They also have really good falafel, salads, tabouli, baba ganouj and hummus. They have a twitter with daily specials and if you come in the evenings and want a drink there is a bar upstairs.
It's also open late so that is a big plus

    Jayatee,

Have you considered cooking up a steak at home and just having a tiny slice? Might take care of the craving, and maybe such a small amount wouldn't make you sick. My ex was a vegetarian for a decade and did that once. It was the beginning of the end of his vegetarian days though. Now he wolfs down bloody steaks all the time.

You can eat some McDonalds. If you're in the mood we might even have a homeless man's leg that we can grill up in the back if you call ahead of time.

    Forreal, food around here sucks.

I've been considering it. Though, I ate meatsauce at a restaurant the other day without realizing it and was reminded why I don't like meat in the first place really (the texture was sooooo weird!!!) and I may just be off the whole idea anyway.

Jay, When you say meat sauce, do you mean sauce with ground meat? Because from what I understand, that's a pretty tough one to be able to handle. I took my ex a whole lot longer to be able to ground beef than anything else.

Tons of fabulous restaurants of all and any kind in DC.A lot have outdoor seating which is great in the summer, would suggest Georgetown Harbour,on the Potomac river, but it's getting close to move indoors by the end of the month, getting cooler outside. There's also Old Town and National Harbour, both on the river, but a little further away in VA and MD.One great place is Indigo Landing, former Potowmac Landing,in a little marina close to National Airport. Also, people in the summer go crabbing, best season is september/october,there are a ton of places in MD along Chesapeake Bay,but prepare to get messy!

DC is definitely known for great steakhouses, chains like Morton's,Ruth chris,Palm, etc.Capital grill and Prime Rib are always awesome. There are many italian places,Cafe Milano in Gtown is very popular, celebrities and politicians go often.French,Bistrot Francais and Kinkeads (sp?),which is actually a 5 star (I think there are 2 five star in town).Anthony Bourdain opened a french steakhouse place in the 90's on Penn Ave,forgot the name.Have to check out Russia House,I'm there all the time, great atmosphere and food. And so on...Oh,forgot to mention Old Angler's Inn in Potomac (french fusion) and Serbian Crown (old russian/french),Great Falls,VA .I can still go on,there are so many great places.

As far as asian, there are a ton of sushi bars, thai, malasian, fusion,a lot around Dupont circle area/Golden Triangle.

I will, however, say that DC doesn't have good pizza, like NYC style. The only place is good is Italian Store in Arlington.
Not too many good Mexican places, unfortunately.I looove good mexican, especially after living in south AZ,but nothing really like that here.

I will also suggest for you to check out the Ust corridor,a ton of different restaurants, different types, wine bars, jazz clubs,etc....Which brings me to mention a very popular "hole-in-the-wall" type that always has a line, and featured on Food Network and Travel channel.Ben's Chili Bowl. It's on U and like 11th I think.

Can think of more places, but these already are good ones to check out. Will add if think of something I missed.
