Thumbs up THE Ayurvedic and Western Hair Care Recipe Thread

I found this on another forum, and thought I would share it with you lovely ladies....

This one is a compilation of home made herbal Ayurvedic recipes for hair washes, conditioners, and oiling treatments, with a list of brand name Ayurvedic products, a Q&A at the bottom.

    http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...le&articleid=3

This one is a westernized version, with recipes for the hair including ACV, eggs, vinegar, honey, coconut and olive oil, bananas, aloe, shea butter, and more local herbs. It has some great recipes for hair gels, de frizzing sprays, hair cremes, butters, masques, and treatments.

    http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...&articleid=134

And this one is a compilations of natural ways to COLOR your hair, including Hennas, Glosses, Rinses, Mud Treatments, and ways to enhance ANY hair color, blonde, dark, or red.

    http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...le&articleid=2

Seriously, browse these, they are SO worth checking out! At the end of the Color article, there are test strands showing all the different herbal dyes and the color they produced in the hair.

I've been on that site lots of times and have tried many of the recipes. They work wonders for you hair! Be careful though. When I went all natural with my haircare, my hair stopped responding to store-bought products...now there is not a gel, mousse or spray that can tame mine! Granted, I'm Black, but my fairer sisters may have the same issue if your hair is naturally curly or frizzy. So in hind site, I wish I'd kept a good mix of products going, because now my only alternative to my afro is extensions & wigs.

    *BUMP*

Okay, so I just put in an order for a bunch of herbs, and am now trying to do natural hair care on my hair. I've gone from bleached blonde back to my natural dark brown color, and am trying to grow it long and healthy. This is officially my new project. I have scalp psoriasis, so I'm not sure if these herbs will help or hurt my scalp. We'll see.

    So far, I've purchased:

    *Herbs:
    - Amla powder
    - Shikakai powder
    - Kalpi tone powder
    - Neem powder
    - Brahmi powder

    *Oils, Etc:
    - Coconut oil
    - Castor oil
    - Rosehip oil
    - Rosewater (not an oil)

I'm still using store-bought hair products (mostly from Sallys), but will be including the items above regularly in my hair care routine.

So... what are your experiences with ayurvedic herbs on your hair?? Any recommendations? Any links to long hair care threads you'd like to post?

Please, check out the African Pride Braid Sheen spray from Sally's..it has peppermint, rosemary, tea tree oil & many herbs. I had an irritated itchy scalp & it so helped..they have a Olive Oil growth product w/herbs too.
Suave in the dark gold bottles, anti breakage shampoo & conditioner are super too.

Bump, bump, ladies! I love natural recipes because they are so much better for you, easily customized for your specific needs, and CHEAP!

I currently use a homemade "shampoo" made of exactly two ingredients - one can coconut milk and two cups aloe vera gel - and it treats my hair so well that I don't even have to use conditioner. I just apply it to my hair after I dampen it at the beginning of my shower, let it "soak in" while I do the rest of my shower routine, then scrub my scalp with a shampoo brush before rinsing it out. Word of advice if you want to try it out, though: it has to stay in the fridge for use up to one week, but stays in the freezer for six months.
I also use a 4:1 mix of olive oil (really want to switch it to jojoba) and castor oil to massage my scalp once a week, and use a little extra on the lower half of my hair when I flat iron it. Just be VERY careful of your smoke points when using natural oils for heat styling.

I've been very heavily considering switching to a (coconut) milk and honey shampoo with a cranberry and/or beet rinse when I go red. I'm thinking I might have to do the cranberry/beet rinse BEFORE washing, though, for the pigment to deposit. As soon as I can afford to do it, I'm thinking of trying inversion therapy too. One of the added benefits is supposed to be hair growth!

UPDATE! Woohoo! Hair has grown 7/8ths of an inch in the last 3.5 weeks! I measured using the subtle markings of my dyed hair versus my natural hair color growing out. The products above totally work! Although, I don't think the rosewater is doing anything... it just seems like a scented water, but I could be wrong.

Eyelashes are hair too, so I figured why not add something on those?

Right now, I'm using just pure castor oil on them and I feel like it's working (it's definitely slowly improving my under eye circles, but so gradually that I don't notice the difference unless I miss a couple days) but I'm not going to say that it DOES work until I take my one month and three month "after" photos.
I also found a few videos on Youtube that look promising, but I haven't tried because I don't have the ingredients yet.

    "Longer Lashes in 3 Days"
    1 tablespoon almond oil
    1 teaspoon honey
Mix until well blend. Apply with a mascara brush and leave on at night.

"How To Grow Long Eyelashes FAST! (Guaranteed Longer Lashes)"
    1 part vitamin E oil
    1 part castor oil
    1 part coconut oil
Mix well in container of choice. Rub onto upper lash line at night. [She promises results in a week.]

The majority of other videos on natural lash growth (really all hair growth videos) focus on castor oil or some other iteration of castor and vitamin E and/or coconut oil and/or aloe. Some recommend Aquaphor as an ingredient under the assumption that it's a water based product, but it's a petroleum product!
