Question Not wanting to eat? Ever go through it?

My boyfriend and I joke that we are on a "hunger strike", but seriously. For like two weeks, I haven't wanted to eat. At all. I will literally make something, take two bites, get grossed out, and pitch it. And like four bites will fill me up. It's weird. I usually eat about 4-6 times a day!!

We went out to lunch yesterday to a place I love. We filled up on chips and salsa (like assholes), and ended up taking 9/10ths of our food home. I did eat some of it when I got home from work last night though. Our fridge is full of full take out boxes. It's really ridiculous.

I'm not particularly stressed, I drink a metric ass ton of water ( I actually drink exclusively water unless I'm out drinking with my friends a few times a week), I get lots of sleep. I am very busy but it isn't a case of forgetting to eat. It's a case of feeling like every time I eat I have to force myself.

Normally I am of the school of thought that if you're not hungry don't eat and vice versa, but I've lost about five pounds this week.

Ever go through a phase where food doesn't interest you? What did you do about it?

I've had this problem. It comes and goes. I'm not sure what causes yours, but mine is just the left over vestiges of a former life. I lived in a hippie crash pad with a bunch of other teens through high school. We had to ration food, so now sometimes I'll go back into that mode and have a hard time bringing myself to eat the food.

I find it helps to just take baby steps and encourage myself to eat just a little more here and there. That usually will eventually get be going and I'll be back to healthy eating habits again. It can also help to pay attention to your cravings. Maybe you're not giving your body what it really needs. That happens to me sometimes too. I'll look at a fridge full of food and wonder "why doesn't any of this sound good?" Then I'll realize I haven't been eating enough fruits/veggies/whatever and what I really want is a big salad, or a fruit smoothie, etc.

My problem is more that I will forget to eat. A week will go by and I will realize that except for a few random things, I've eaten absolutely nothing at all.

Lately though Im having the problem you describe. I made pancakes this morning bc I was starving, took 3 little bites and was stuffed. Not sure what to do about it. Im trying to eat some fruit and yogurt with granola just so I can have something in my system.

I've had this problem in the past, but I believe it was hormonal.

After I started taking Spironolactone and got put on birth control, this problem stopped.

Please don't be insulted by this, but are you sure you're not pregnant? If you're feeling mildly nauseated a lot of the time and foods and beverages you usually like don't interest you, it could be morning sickness.

Yep. I experienced this for the past 3 weeks or so. I don't worry about it, and just try to make sure that when I do eat it's healthy food. I also drink only water for the most part, but when I'm not eating much I try to drink milk more often to get a bit more protein/calcium/vit D.

I do this when I'm really happy with my life, especially when I'm happy and super busy. When I was younger I'd forget to eat for days at a time, now it's more like what you describe. My family jokes about it. When I blew up to 105 they were all going "Ah, what's wrong."

Usually, there is one or two foods that I can manage to eat more than a bite or two of before the sick feeling hits, fruit, dry toast or cold foods seem to work best....but still I can't eat much. Sorry if I'm not too helpful.

I find sometimes I have a hard time eating because of the fact that I'm vegetarian and the fact that I live alone and cook for one. Normally what I do is eat in smaller portions (snacking) many times throughout the day. I will eat like crackers and cheese, fruit sliced up, veggies, hommous and pita etc...This helps me eat and have energy to do whatever I need to do that day and not get all lethargic and fatigued from not eating. Some people just don't eat large meals, and really your not suppose to anyways. Its better to eat 5-6 small meals, then 3 big ones.

^^ That's part of it too. I'm vegetarian and cooking for one seems like a waste. I think I am just excited and happy and eating is a low priority. Hopefully it will be over soon, ha.

i had this problem and was losing a lot of weight. i was exhausted all the time and feeling so full after i did eat just a little. never found out why it happened but i was prescribed Marinol (a synthetic THC pill) because medicinal marijuana isn't legal in NY. that totally stimulated my appetite and these days i'm eating fine without it. not the 1st option but if it gets bad enough, pot helps.

I go through this when I am either depressed or stressed. I guess I am the opposite of princessjass. Honestly smoking weed in the past has been the only thing that helped me.

It's much more common to lose your appetite when you are depressed or stressed. That's how my mom is and all of my family except one cuz. I'm just an odd duck!

The thing about snacking totally helps me. If possible, I keep food around all day so that I can just graze. Only eating a couple of bites at a time is totally fine if you do it again every like half hour to hour. And I second the part about drinking milk.

Well, I have lost about 10 pounds but my boyfriend did goad me into eating some nachoes and quesadillas today. Oh and milk- I drink soy. The idea makes me puke. But cheese and sour cream I can do!

    Salads?

Go down to your local bookshop and get a book out on salads. There are innumerable variations on the theme using sometimes unexpected vegetables and flavour combinations.

I've always found it rather fun experimenting with dishes I haven't tried before.

Haha this is what I was coming to say... no, I have a huge appetite, love to eat and honestly, the only time I ever felt like you describe was when I was pregnant. BUt I see you got your period so hmm.. I don't know. I have the opposite problem, can't keep enough groceries in the house!

what else increases your appetite besides pot? It doesn't have that effect on me anymore, I don't really get the munchies. I've been smoking for 8 years straight now (except during pregnancy and breastfeeding), so maybe that's why.

I really need to eat more, I used to eat like a cow to try to gain weight, but lately I haven't been hungry at all. I'll force feed myself in front of other people just so they won't think I'm anorexic, but I just have no appetite!

Maybe trying some new, easy meals will help? I am always more interested in "new" foods.

Some good veggie options for when you are busy and don't want to cook are those prepackaged Dole Salads. They have Southwest, Summer, Asian and Fall that are all AWESOME! I buy an extra bag of baby greens because they give you WAY more dressing and toppings then you need. Campbells Selects also has some pretty decent veggie soups, Amy's stuff is all GREAT too. Tomato sandwiches on Rye and Popcorn are good when I want something easy. Oh, and one of my fav's is to saute some spinach in a tiny bit of Olive Oil and sprinkle with Parm. YUMM!!

Maybe you could try keeping some Tortilla or Pita Chips and Hummus around for snacks. Red Pepper Hummus rocks and it's super easy to make homemade, or you can buy it premade! Salsa is also good and if you've seriously lost weight, guac has quiet a few cals, but is still pretty healthy. Oh, and Wheat thins are always good if you are feeling queasy.

damn girl that totally sucks. i can definitely relate. i've been smoking about 8yrs now too and i went through a period of about 2yrs where i could hardly eat and food made me sick. its the worst because everyone would just say to me "you're so skinny!" and i'd be thinking "i know motherfucker, do you think i like hating food and having no energy and feeling like crap all the time?" i really just wanted to be healthy. although to be honest, i did like how skinny i was, but i would have gladly gained 15lbs to feel "normal" again. i really can't say how i eventually did that, but i did and i feel pretty great now. and i mean like i'm not sure how i got better, idk what changed. so that's not very helpful. but at least i did eventually get better.
i did start smoking less. and that killed my appetite when i wasn't smoking, but hey i didn't have one anyway. but when i would smoke again, i would get real high, but more than that, serious munchies! and then i think it became one of those things where the more you eat, the more you wanna eat. i had to like re-strech my stomach or something.
so idk how often you smoke, i know i do every evening now, but if it is a lot then try stopping for like a week or so till you get that old feeling when you smoke again

Haha. I'm a square. I've never done a drug in my entire life, including pot. The smell of it makes me gag. I do drink whiskey and smoke cigarettes though.

Try green smoothies hun.... GREAT nutrition. Not a lot of calories but it's a good way to get some fruit and greens and vitamins in you and for me it's a lot easier to drink a smoothie than it is to sit down and try and choke down a big plate of food when Im not in the mood. Plus you could add hemp or whey protein to the smoothies for added calories/protein.

    My morning smoothie is typically:

    handful of spinach greens
    apple
    kiwi
    small handful of pineapple chunks
small handful of frozen berries like strawberry or rasberries
1/2 avacado (mmm good fat-plus it gives the smoothie a creamy consistency)
    scoop of hemp protein

Nutrition blast. Good thing to wake up to.

It's a cycle. The longer you don't eat the more your stomach shrinks and the less it takes to "fill you up". Also, if you keep telling yourself "wow.. I'm still not hungry" and you keep thinking about it "gee, I'm not hungry yet" you won't be.

The mind is an amazing thing.

I also agree with the "hormones" statement. They can make you feel not hungry just as much as they can make you want to eat everything in site. It's one of the reasons a woman's weight tends to fluctuate so much.
