    Some of my favs:
    Memoirs of a Geisha
The Crimson Petal and the White(awesome story of a prostitute and her rise and fall through Victorian England society)
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn(my all time fav. About a little girl growing up in turn of the century Brooklyn. Anything by the author..Betty Smith is wonderful)

anything by James Patterson or Jeffrey Deaver

if you like horror: Dean Koontz, Bentley Little(REALLY bizarre stuff...great books) and Chuck Palhuniak(more psychological then horror. He wrote Fight Club, which is IMO one of his worst!)

If you like light quick reads..the Harry Potter or Twilight series are both good

If you like true crime...Ann Rule books ROCK

I read like crazy. 2-4 books a week depending on how busy I am.

I just finished this one last month...it is stellar:

    http://www.amazon.com/John-Adams-Dav.../dp/0743223136

If you have any interest in historic non-fiction, I highly recommend this one.
John Adams was truly one of our nation's greatest forefathers. I had no idea how much so until I read this book. It is very well-done and unlike other biographies of Adams and his contemporaries, this book doesn't dwell on details of the Revolution or the creation of our nation's Constitution. It purely focuses on Adams.

All awesome. I would personally add Stranger in a Strange Land and Time Enough for Love, but I know a lot of fans don't like those...

Also, anything by George RR Martin, especially Fevre Dream or A Song of Ice and Fire books. Anything by Dan Simmons. Orson Scott Card.

If you like big fat historical novels, I highly recommend the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series. You HAVE to start with the first one - Outlander, and read them in order. The first three are terrific. The rest (the 7th was just released this month) gets mixed reviews. But the first three are definitely da bomb, with the best heroine and hero EVAH.

Short Hijack SGT have you read the Deathworld Trilogy by Harry Harrison? I read it when I was really young and my oldest son (who has similar reading tastes) special ordered a hard back for me for my 50th a few years ago. Highly recommended seeing your tastes.

His Taliesin cycle was an interesting take on the Arthurian legend as well...

Alton Brown just came out with his first in a three book series about every "Good Eats" episode ever. Its an amazing read if you care about Mr. Brown's cooking style (which I am in love with)

If you actually do like romance, I always highly recommend Nora Roberts (especially her trilogies) and Lisa Kleypas (whose sex scenes seem much hotter and more realistic than you usually find in historical romance).

The Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris is quite good.

It's meant a bit more for teenagers, but I always loved Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy.

Barbara Michaels has some good stuff, especially Wings of the Falcon. Very interesting, kind of like an Italian Zorro.

^^ Speaking of Nora Roberts the books she writes as J.D. Robb are very good. They take place several decades in the future but are not sci-fi. I would come back as Roark in a future life any day if I could bang Eve Dallas

Even though you said no sci-fi you may enjoy Ender's Game by Orson Scott-Card. A very well written story for any genre.

Also, IMO, most Heinlein doesn't come off as "science-fictiony"...
