WWW Tell Me Where To Live in San Francisco!!!

I'm thinking about making the switch from Vegas to San Francisco

I need an area in the city where :
all the techie types are this is most important
Near Gold Club, Hustler etc...(one of those types)
    No Car required
Rent reasonable (my part between 6-9) if with a roommate splitting
    Safe, I'm a single girl
Big Dog friendly with parks not too far away.
    Not all Gay guys
If you respond I will gift you with responses to Vegas questions (should you have any)

    Thank you so much!

San Francisco is only seven miles square, so everything is pretty close to everything else. Unfortunately, only the outskirts of the city really allow dogs, and like she said, it might be more expensive (they usually want a deposit). Bayview would probably be a good bet for dogs, but it's a ghetto (but kind of getting better). Gold Club is in Soma, also a ghetto, and Hustler is in North Beach, which is very expensive, unless you live in a by-the-week hotel, which won't allow dogs. The Richmond and the Sunset would probably be good for dogs, but it might take a long time to get to work on public transpo.(like maybe an hour at the most), and would be like a 25$ cab ride back home (public transpo runs 24 hours though, if you want to take that chance). Both the Richmond and the Sunset are right next to Golden Gate park. The Sunset is usually cheaper than the Richmond, and both are more likely to be roomate situations for you. Some parts of the Mission might let you have dogs and might be closer to work, and are close to parks too.
If you want to live by yourself, astudio in Tenderloin would probably be the cheapest option, but it would maybe cost 1000+/-, and it's a ghetto. Yor luck with dogs would probably be 50/50.

Hope that helps--good luck, you'll need it
San Francisco is actually a big dog town, but you wouldn't know it looking at craigslist. I don't know how people do it.

By the way, I think most of the techie type guys live in silicon valley, not San Francisco. If you are looking to do private shows or something, a lot of times they get hotel rooms when they come into the city. Or you could try Noe Valley but that is far away and expensive. Or Cole Valley, but that is expensive.

    Thank you so much Rocketgirl, I have found some places in Russian Hill that will take dogs and I have sorta resolved that I will have to pay 14 or 1500 to live on my own;
I actually want to be involved in a web startup and was hoping to find some talented people for partnerships out there; maybe I should try the Kit Kat club and living near there; I wonder if it's sorta boring to live there though?

Not to ruin your fun, but after 15 years in the bay I've realized they are all gay or pretending not to be.

So not the place for a straight girl.

Coming back to the east was a godsend to my self-esteem in this regard.

I love straight guys. I wish I hadn't spent my youth thinking all those guys might be into girls.

I've never slept with so many guys who had previously slept with men. Sorry, but now it grosses me out.

I would give it a test-drive first. Come to the area and go to a few clubs, and try out. See what's in it for you. It might just work out. But I wouldn't be looking for places to live until I had found a club that could generate the rent.

Yes, most of the techies are in silicon valley.

thats very smart..... SF isnt one of those places u just UP n move to... its VERY expensive... even for a tiny ass studio ur gonna be paying at least 950-1100 and thats in the hood. i dont know if u been reading my other posts, but they ALL have something to do with me doubting the SF clubs and worried if id be able to pull money in from them, cuz all ive been hearing is that theyre all slow, + high ass stage fees. we just gotta face it, the city is expensive as fuck.

i DO think ud have a hard time finding a safe spot for u and ur dog for a reasonable amount...and if u do take the craigslist approach/get a roomie, just please be careful as fuck, there are crazy ass ppl out there. take the time to really interview them. -shivers- my brother can tell u some crazy ass craigslist roommate stories....

check this out tho as another option. like she said, SF is very small actually, its just all compacted. and the bay (other surrounding cities) is just RIGHT outside of where ur trying to be. my fiance has a apt he rents for the days he works in SF. his place is right on the outskirts of berkeley/ border line oakland. (not the ghetto.. or the east) he splits the rent and the place is dog friendly..its HUGE and hes paying about 600$ he hops on the BART to SF ($6.00 round trip) and from there he can take the MUNI for $1.50 or a $20 cab ride. from his place to just about anywhere in SF, it takes about 45 - 1 hour but its the cheaper way to go about it..instead of being IN SF but paying 1500 and being in the hood. oh yea, and with shitty parking. (we have two cars). so think about living RIIIGHHHT outside the city, and think about how much u can save, cuz if u make the move to SF and u can ACTUALLY FIND A CLUB YOU CAN MAKE $ AT, i guarantee u, ull have to work 4+ nights just trying to make rent every damn month.

heres a tiny ass studio for 1300 (all of these are pet friendly with a deposit
    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/1423030736.html

    studio in the civic - 1500 dog + 300
    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/1419915928.html

this is in northbeach, right by all the broadway clubs... so hustler n such... fuckin expensive
    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/1424935866.html

downtown ..may consider a dog .. cheapest.
    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/1421320027.html

and a perfect example of what u could get for about 1200 in the surrounding cities with minimal commute

if u can tolerate these hideous ass walls for 700ish
    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/apa/1424222044.html

big ass backyard for ur dog
    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/apa/1419263647.html

    something afforable and private.
    http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/apa/1426885180.html

keep in mind i lived in east oakland half my life.. (yes, east muthafkin oakland lol) so i know the area pretty well. these are all in safe locations i assure u.just wanned to give u an idea of both spectrums. u should really just come n check the areas out tho before u hop on a plane to Frisco like "ok im heeerre!"
    hope i helped ;]

Goldi- I am still going through all of your postings and you are f---ing incredible to have done this much work for me!!! Thank you! (I must have had some good karma coming my way) the apts you posted in the city are SPOT on exactly the look (interior and exterior of where I want to be living in SF) Since I'm moving to SF I want to live in SF and have 100% the experience of living in those old Victorians! I don't need any space in the house for my dog or backyard, we do need to live near a park (I hear Pac heights is perfect for that) we spend 1-2 hours doing outdoorsy things everyday in the asphalt jungle known as Las Vegas. The other houses you posted in surrounding areas look like old run down vegas homes; I am definently in Lust with those old Victorians you posted! As for work , I would fly in to Vegas every weekend or every other weekend to make money; I lived in LA for rent of 1600 for two years like that, except I didn't like LA as much. Also I have no car and don't want one!!! Pac heights and Russian Hill are looking like options, I hope I will meet some techie types there--where do you live in the city? pm me about working in Vegas (since you are not happy with the SF clubs)

Just an example of how right-on and resourceful residents of the bay area can be!

I lived and worked in SF for years. I pretty much lived in the Marina for the most part. ( I did live in the Mission which can be interesting, but tons of great and cheap coffee houses and restaurants) and in a beautiful Edwardian in Noe Valley. ( A bit far from things, but great parking and lots of space.

As another poster said, the city is small, so no matter what club you work in, you are just a cab/bus ride away.

I commuted to the silicon valley for the most part. It was kind of a bitch to have a car in the city, but I needed one.

It is a beautiful city. I found the clubs a little intense for my taste, but that's why I worked mostly in the suburbs. But if ur used to working in Vegas, I think the transition would be easy for you.

    Good luck:-)

If you are looking to start up a web co., There are still lots of those types in the city. Do you know people, or how were you planning on meeting them? If you are cool with it you might find plenty of customers to actually be great resources (those were always my favorite customers). I don't think you need to live outside the city to meet them. There are also a lot of techie conventions that come to the city on a regular basis, working in a club would give you a heads up about when, and then you could mingle at the W or whatever.
Like she said, if you are used to working in Vegas you are pretty well prepared for the city. It's tougher than most places, guys always want extras and you have to hustle. I worked day shift at Hustler a little bit about 2 years ago and it was pretty easy money since they didn't take any $ out of the floor dances. I would have stayed except it wouldn't fit with my day job schedule, and trifling matters like they made me change my stage name and wouldn't let me pick my own music.
But I would say it's a good (probably the best) club to start at...it's clean, upscale, has a day and night shift, and is in North Beach so you can feel out other clubs in the area and maybe work at more than one if you want (the majority of the clubs in SF are on one street; Hustler, Centerfolds, Showgirls, four little clubs, and a peep show, Lusty Lady. I've worked at almost all of them, and they are almost all owned or affiliated with Deja Vu)
The Gold Club is supposed to be good money too, but it is also owned by Deja Vu and is isolated from the other clubs. It is walking distance from the conventions tho.

Hustler and Gold Club are on my short list of clubs; but apparently Gold Club is unfavorable due to them "putting you in their books" are you into tech/startup stuff?

OK not every dude is gay, but such a high rate of gay guys it's just not as fun as other places.

SF is like the gay mecca so a lot of guys move there for this reason.

I lived in Berkeley. So maybe it's the fact the a lot of young in the closet gay guys found it to be a good opportunity to stay in the closet, go to a good school, explore the gay lifestyle and not have their parents know.

Yes there are guys that like girls, but like a said a lot of them have tried the other side and may or may not be up front about it. At this point in my life, if you've tried dick I am absolutely not interested.

Don't get me wrong. There are married gay guys here with kids - you see it enough. But, I don't get the same hateful, contemptuous looks.

Some gay guys don't like women period and frankly don't hide it.

I've always been used to guys checking me out, so when I moved there it really fucked with me because I was too young to realize how many gay guys there were.

I miss CA sometimes, but I've always disliked SF. IMO it's cold, dingy, too expensive, dirty, and the city center is filled with addicts, needles, and homeless people so it can be very depressing. All this and any nice area is filled with rich gay guys.

For the cost of living, I'd be more inclined to move to NYC. Competition for those super expensive SF places that will allow a dog is going to be stiff.

I lived in the Richmond District with my two big dogs, just 5 blocks from sunset beach and 2 blocks from Golden Gate Park, both are dog friendly.

The drawbacks were that it was VERY cold (about 10 degrees colder than Marina and Downtown area) and it was always overcast, even when the sun was shining in Marina and downtown...

I lived in the Tendernob/Lower Nob Hill area for over 2 years, and paid $1350 (or was it just $1300... bah not that $50 made a huge difference w/that crazy amount) a month for my little shoebox studio. It was absurdly small, but I made it home and loved it while I lived there. My hometown has been movin' on up though (restaurants/nightlife/etc.)! So I'm now happy I moved back. Huge place, affordable rent, neighborhood is ghetto but I'm used to it since I grew up here.

I heart Oakland & miss it so.

I was living there 1.5 years ago w/a friend of a friend and was sharing a two bedroom apartment. We were both pretty low-key, kept to ourselves, but I wasn't working nights at the time. My split was $550/month, included h2o, electric, heating. She had a dog & a cat.

Wasn't the best of areas, but I never felt like I was in danger. 3 minutes to get to BART. But BART stops running at midnight, so if you don't have a car, cab fare can be $.

As for the city, I would probably base it on making sure you can keep your dog & then how easy it is to get around. SF is small in size, but there are are some biggity arsed hills that are no fun if you are walking or riding a bike. So, big hills on the way to work/market/drug store/etc? How long to walk/ride there? How much is cab fare? Saving $100, $200, $300 in rent to live out in the boonies but having to spend $10-30 in cab fare will eat your savings.
If I moved back to the 41510 I'd probably get a scooter b/c they are cheap and a good mix of bicycle convenience w/the handy internal combustion engine.

I really recommend this map if you are going to live w/o a car: http://www.rei.com/product/734872

It shows good bicycle routes & walking routes as well as transit stops. It also has indicators on the streets to tell you if there's a hill and if so how steep it is.
(I don't think I'd feel safe riding a bike to work tho.)

When I move to a new place, I get a map & mark down where I'll be working (all jobs & all potential future jobs), and where I think I might want live. Then I also mark down all the major places I shop (Trader Joes, Whole Foods, book stores, and drug stores). If I have a gym there, I'll mark down it's location. If I'm in school, that obviously gets marked down on the map as well (because some classes aren't always on the campus).

Then when everything is marked down on the map I can see geographically how it all fits together and I can decide which area makes the most sense to live in.

And, when I'm living in a new place I'll write down phone numbers for the places I end up going the most in case I'm out & near one of the places but don't know if it's open, don't know if so and so is working, or want to see if something is in stock.
I also write down cab companies phone #s and the names of cabbies that were good.

Wow you give very good advice; I'm going to do that, If you have any other hints about organization and efficiency in moving, life etc, please share!
