Default Aphrodite Platforms: Innovation in safety for sex workers

I remembered hearing about these shoes a few years ago, and I even talked about them in a few threads. The Aphrodite Project is an organization that aims to promote safety among sex workers; prostitutes being their largest target. I don't view the design of these shoes as functional for strippers, but I still think the idea is noble. No matter what your profession, all women have a right to safety in their line of work--strippers AND prostitutes included!

This is their latest model: (They have 5 total)

Thoughts? Other products to improve the safety of sex workers?

    On another note:

I'm quite paranoid about my safety, and about the system fucking me over. I'm well aware of the large number of extras girls in the Detroit area, and I know the police down here are corrupt. I've been thinking about wearing a hidden camera, which would have to be EXTREMELY small for obvious reasons, but high up enough to visually catch what is going on. (My panty or maybe a necklace could be a hiding place).

I'm trying to figure out if this idea is plausible. I would have no problem saving up about a grand to invest in a good, reliable camera. It would have to be transmitting somewhere, and be able to tape for at least 8 hours without being plugged in or recharged. I would only need the footage to last me 24-48 hours at most unless I taped over it again. The entire purpose would be to protect myself in the event of an attack, or an unjust arrest. If the camera transmitted the information elsewhere (like streaming to my home computer) then I would be able to access it and record it onto a DVD if I needed to prove my innocence in court, and it could also be used to identify an attacker if that should ever happen. I know this technology is out there, I just don't know if it is practical to even consider it. I suppose I would also have to find out if that type of "evidence" is admissible in court if I privately recorded it, and if I am violating any laws by bringing it into a strip club.

The smallest camera I've been able to find would blend into a shirt as a button, but that is not practical for a dancer--obviously. I'm aware that some clubs have cameras, but I would prefer my own for insurance purposes. Any ideas?

I personally wouldn't go that far, but I'm not as concerned about safety as you are, if I lived in Detroit I would feel differently.

Don't give out your phone number, remember that a guy can find out everything about you just from your phone number. If you must, use a prepaid phone or something similar, but not linked to your name.

Be aware of your surroundings. Just keep an open eye when arriving to and leaving work, and when getting home. I have called the cops before when I felt like a guy was following me on the highway. Always have someone walk you to your car. Park where customers cannot see you getting in and out of your car so that they don't know what you drive. If you can't do this, wait until all the customers leave before you leave.

Trust your instincts. If a guy is giving you a weird feeling, tell somebody.

Other than that, usually you can trust bouncers and managers. Not just any weirdo off the street can work in a strip club, they do an extensive background check before they hire anyone there. Also, usually they are really glad to help with things like this.

Thanks J.D., and I know I do sound paranoid. The truth of the matter is that Detroit really IS dangerous--and when you live around here you know it. I haven't grown up in Detroit, no do I spend much time down there. I live about 20 minutes north of the outskirts of the city, and although I have friends who live by Detroit, I really never have a reason to be in the city for more than an hour.

Since I live by Detroit, though, I am well aware of what happens around town. Sure, some parts really aren't that bad, and I think 8 mile has an unfair bad rap in certain parts, but there are other parts where a little, white girl would get snatched up and would be never seen again. If I went and walked around 7 mile and 1-75 (crack town U.S.A.) I would be gone in less than 10 minutes. People get found in dumpsters and the middle of the street, and no one flinches. The city is grimy, and the only nice thing down there is the churches. All of the buildings in the bad areas are shit, all falling apart and abandoned. The rumors you've heard aren't exaggerated.

I want to make sure if I make a living down there, it doesn't cost me my life.

Isn't Detroit where they found the frozen body sticking out of a big sheet of ice and people knew it was there but just played around it anyway?

I have no idea. So many people go missing down there it isn't even funny.

    True story:

My mom was 17 and was best friends with a girl who we'll call Theresa. Her friend had beautiful, long blond hair and an amazing personality. When they graduated high school Theresa started exploring her new found freedom, and as soon as she turned 18 she hit the club scene. After some struggling to find her identity, Theresa married an older man who happened to be a doctor and popped out two beautiful children. By the time she was 23-years-old so had a loving family and her husband made enough money so she could be a stay at home mom. Sadly, though, Theresa found her way back to the club scene by the time she was 24-years-old. Theresa met up with some old friends and tried crack, not thinking much of it. After two months Theresa had spent thousands of dollars to support her drug habit, and wound up leaving her husband and two children to go live in Detroit with her crack dealer.

My mom and Theresa had stayed friends even up to the point that Theresa was using crack. Eventually, my mom got a frantic call from Theresa asking for $100 or so to pay off a drug dealer. She said she needed it or they'd come after her. My mom said she'd have to wait two days to go down there and give Theresa the money. When my mom made it down there she saw Theresa, completely bald, very bruised, standing outside her car begging for money. The drug dealers that Theresa owed the $100 to kidnapped her, beat her, shaved her head and then demanded their money. My mom came just in the nic' of time to keep Theresa alive. She gave Theresa the $100 and left.

Two weeks later Theresa went missing. It has been 11 years since anyone has seen her or spoken to her. Theresa's remains have never been found.

Cool ideas... not the best looking shoes.
    Don't you ever sleep?
Not at night...that's when the stars have rather better things to do. They're coming out, shining, that sort of thing.
