    Default Dancing and sciatica?

I'm sure someone on here has been diagnosed with sciatica at some point. It is basically inflammation and irritation of the sciatic nerve, which just so happens to be the largest nerve in the human body. This past Thursday, I had to go to Triage because of excruciating pain in my right hip/buttock area. They wound up diagnosing me with sciatica. I was prescribed Flexeril and I now have to do physical therapy twice a week for 4-6 weeks because I'm pregnant and it can get worse with the weight gain.

My mom had sciatica and it let to an intense surgery on her vertebrae after several years of heavy lifting, four pregnancies, and just being active. I'm worried that this will happen to me, and that dancing will only irritate the problem. Do you think I should talk to my physical therapist about my concerns? Has anyone else had this problem while dancing?

Yes you should absolutely ask your physical therapist and/or doctor about your concerns.

Stretching helps. The old bend at the waist, knees straight, touch your toes stretch.

I have sciatica and severe lower back problems, and I work 4-5 days a week now, down from my 6-7 because my back has been really bad lately.

My history: I had two slipped discs from riding horses and baleing hay (don't laugh--I had a job working with horses) by the time I was 16, diagnosed with degenerative disc disease at age 19, and at 21, suffered a bad accident that messed my back up so bad I had to have open-back surgery and they removed parts of 3 discs in my spine. After the surgery, I recovered, and freaked out about the bill, so I skipped physical therepy and now, since I didn't do the therepy, I have tons of scar tissue back there that is very tough and because of this I basically have no movement in my lower spine at all--I believe from L1-4, and S1.

Needless to say, dancing doesn't help at all, and in fact, it makes things SO MUCH worse. I was told after my surgery NOT to ever wear heels again, and to never lift anything over 15lbs. Obviously, I obey neither of those two things and my pain has gotten so bad, on my days off, I pretty much just run my errands then sit at home, soaking in my tub, or laying in bed, popping vicodin. I've started another series of epidurals to see if it will help with the pain, but they have to do caudal epidurals since there is so much scar tissue in my lumbar region and going in that way wouldn't work, and because it's a caudal epidural, I can't sit down for days after the procedure and it really fucks my work up, which sucks cuz the procedure itself is fucking expensive and I NEED to work to pay for it.
Not to mention I have to be sedated heavily for the whole thing cuz I freak during epidurals, and sedation isn't cheap either....

Anyways--I know how much the pain sucks. I am on Lyrica and Vicodin right now for it, and I take Flexeril whenever I need extra help. I occassionally take something stronger than Vicodin because I need it to get through the work night--I work from 6pm to 4am some nights, and trust me, after about dance number 25, or 26, I need SOMETHING or else I would have to head straight home! On nights I do 90-120 dances, I literally can barely walk at all, and can't sleep cuz my back hurts so bad.

Chronic pain sucks. I have to take 6 10mg vicodin a day with my Lyrica and it STILL isn't enough. It seems like nothing is ever going to work! Surgery helped a lot, but it's just getting worse and worse. If these epidurals don't help, the doc told me I'm going to have to have surgery again, thus putting me into even more medical debt (I still own on the last surgery). It sucks. I'm 24 years old and some days I wake up and literally cannot stand up straight without popping a Vicodin--and some days I can't even walk!

So I feel your pain, I do.

My Mom had the same surgery as you this past April. I've already got the sciatica and they gave me flexeril and physical therapy for now. I'm going to talk to my physical therapist and see what my limitations will be for now, but I suppose pain meds are my best bet for now.

I know this is an old thread, but hopefully someone will benefit from it. I hurt my upper right part of my back a couple months ago, landing a pole trick I've done for years w/ my eyes closed. It turns out I was 'godessing' the wrong way. (Basically, when you're on your back and arch your way up, NEVER strectch your head back. It's what I did...twice...in one week).

So, I saw a chiro that helped me a bit, found a great masseuse and went to the doctor after I hurt myself the first time. She said it was mildly muscular and nothing serious. But when I was getting better almost 3 weeks later, I did nothing but turn to my right as I was talking to someone who was annoying me, and OUCH!! Yup, a nerve, in that same site. Luckily, it was localized, so it didn't spread.

However, I stretched and did cardio. when you do cardio it will nourish the nerve with blood and the nerve will start healing. It took a month, but my nerve is pretty much healed. And, I took muscle relaxers maybe 3 times. Lots of naproxen, though.

But seriously, some low impact cardio and stretching has saved me.

However, I did get an xray about 3 weeks ago and I have mild degeneration of a disc. I just pay attention to my body and try not to stress. I think that's why it happened in my upper region. I've spent most my life being so nervous that sometimes I shoulders would reach my ears, lol!

I hope this might give some insight.
